Roger Federer is the winner of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for 2014

ATPWorldTour.com Fans' Favourite presented by Moët & Chandon (Singles)

Roger Federer: The Swiss has been voted ATPWorldTour.com Fans’ Favourite presented by Moët & Chandon for a record 12th straight year, receiving 65 per cent of all votes cast. Rafael Nadal finished second, followed by Grigor Dimitrov, Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori.

Mental he received 65% of the votes. I'd love to know how many people voted.

Great to see Fed win Sportsmanship award. Nice that the most successful player can also be a great sportsman.

Some interesting results in the popularity vote. Murray clearly isn't very popular (not really surprising). He also came behind delpo last year.

Good to see Dimitrov come third but I wouldn't be surprised if he had an army of teenage girls voting for him. Nishikori's presence is also no surprise.

Regarding Djokovic, China probably can't vote, he is only behind Fed there in terms of popularity.

ATP "Fan Favorite" awards were won by Federer for singles and Bryans for doubles. No surprise to anyone who has ever been to a tournament.

The only worrying thing is the sport may struggle when this incredibly popular player retires. Tennis chiefs are over the moon he is still playing.

Indeed. Federer is the main cash cow for the ATP right now along with Nadal. When he retires, the ATP and the public will need to find a new idol, just like they did in early 2000's when the #1 ranked player was changing often. If you followed tennis in the 90's, you just couldn't see how the tour would survive when Sampras/Agassi were to retire, just like we are now with Federer/Nadal. They're will likely be a transition period just like Sampras->Federer, but eventually, someone will rise to the top and become the new star that will carry the ATP.

Its swell and all that Federer is liked by his peers, but Federer has failed to hold the public's interest since July.
Nadal is the only player able to put tennis on the map.

65% of the total votes to Roger? That is almost two thirds.

Unquestionably the people's champion.

Congratulations to all the winners! :)

Remarkable with Fed winning fan favorite for 12 straight years, and also winning the Edberg award 10 times. A token of him being a nonpareil ambassador for the sport.

I too am surprised to see Grigor beat Novak in the fan vote. He has the makings of a star – if only he could play tennis a wee bit better

For sure!

LOL, again with the popularity award. Just rename it Roger Federer award, it's becoming ridiculous. And it tarnishes Edberg's legacy, although he's too much of a gentleman to even care.

Why is Roger receiving an award named after his employee:)

Its much easier to get votes from you peers when:

You don't make injury excuses for every loss.
Compete the entire year.
You don't complain about surfaces, balls, etc......
You don't put down the importance of Davis Cup.

I've actually never met a Nadal fan who knew the fan favorite award existed.
Because Nadal doesn't post a link to it on facebook.
This is so indicative of Nadal's humility compared to Federer's clownery......
Its a classic snapshot.

If you know you will lose by a landslide, you wouldn't want to be seen as delusional by campaigning in the face of the inevitable.

Who won the 'Favourite injury/surgery award' is what I want to know. I heard someone is on a major streak there too...

A load of staff in the Nike factory were given the day off sewing to do voting.

Not that Fed or Nadal need it, but Dimitrov's placing has the look of corporate intervention. He's so far behind the others when it comes to social media followers, despite the desperate promotion, it's hard to believe there wasn't at least a little bit of targeted vote gathering to swing things.

Yeah right! That is why the link for the fan favorite award was posted in the Nadal News Thread weeks ago and was also posted on the Nadal worshipping blogs.

You need a better excuse, that one is worn out.

Lol...I think it's high time they just re-named it 'The Roger Federer Sportsmanship Award' and just automatically hand it to him every year until he retires. No need to bother with a vote! :)

PS. How the heck did racquet-smashing, umpire-arguing, street-fighting (he once explained away a black eye by saying he'd been in a fight in Moscow) girl-chasing, party-loving Marat Safin land the award TWO years in a row back in 01 and 02? In fact he was the last player ever to win it before Roger came along! Who would have suspected the players of the time thought Safin exhibited more sportsmanship than anybody else?

Congratulations to Roger, very well deserved.

Another reason why Federer is better than Nadal, and Djokovic doesn't even come close! :-D:twisted:

And Murray, well... I don't need to say anything about Murray in comparison with Roger, that is self-explanatory.

It certainly is. Murray has never criticised Roger's playing style or ever made snide remarks about his achievements. But apparently, most of the ATP enjoy Roger's dismissive put-downs against his fellow players and think it constitutes 'great sportsmanship'. No doubt Jelena Jankovic would have voted for him as well if the WTA had been allowed to join in!

Or maybe they just all have a great sense of humour! :)

Well deserved??? What the hell has he done this year to deserve this award  Show me just one tiny sportsmanship Federer moment in the past 365 days?

You're talking about the fan favorite award. Safin won the fan favorite award before Federer went on his never-ending streak. As for the Stefan Edberg Award, it's pathetic to be honest. Everybody knows it hasn't been a sportsmanship award since Rafter or Srichaphan won it (can't really decide between the two). It has just become a groupie award amongst the players that Federer always wins. It has completely flattened the wall between popularity and sportsmanship. I'm pretty sure Edberg never won this award because he was particularly popular - as in everybody wanting to have a cup of tea with him or spend time with him - but because he was one of the great sportsmen in tennis. Since then, its original meaning has been completely subverted.

Stefan Edberg award for 10th time and fan favorite for 12th time !!!

Fed mat get fan favorite even after he retires.

Not only he holds the most tennis records, but the most awards than any professional tennis player. Goat Federer.

Oh okay, thanks. I thought Federer302 had printed out a list of the previous Stefan Edberg winners!

Just why DO the other players like Federer so much when he so often makes sarcastic and dismissive comments about them? I can understand him getting the award on 1 or 2 occasions but year after year after year? What gives??

Half the folks in this thread are confused.

Fed won both the Stefan Edberg award for Sportsmanship and the ATP fan favorite award.

Stefan Edberg award is voted by fellow players while the other one is by fans (obviously includes players who are themselves hardcore Fed fans)

Fellow players know that Fed is someone who plays the sport with class and dignity - does not abuse rules - MTO's , time taken to serve , on court coaching and the whole enchilada. Will not fake injuries to gain mental advantage or not hype opponent and fake humility.

i think he really only makes those comments toward a couple other top players so the other 98% are voting for him. plus he goes the extra distance with fans and charity work so they probably take that into account also

WHen? 2 times? Dude the guy gives thousands of press conferences and all the players know that he has to say something controversial now and then to keep people interested. What do we know about what goes behind the scenes. Fed has some of the best behaviour on court compared to some child like Murray, whom I like off the court but on the court he is seriously a baby.

The Sportsmanship Award is a joke, Federer is mediocre at best in that department. Federer is a gracious winner, but is often a vile loser when the goings get tough, so after 2007 he shouldn't have won it. King MTO and a doping offender were his fellow nominees this year, LOL. And even King Gamesmanship Nadal won it a couple of years ago.
