Roger Federer - KING of heartbreaking losses. Every year toughest loss from 2000.

What nonsense. The whole point of discussing tennis and any sport is to either discuss the past or discuss the future by using what happened in the past.

FPBD is rough on us Fed fans. Real rough. But it also means he keeps us emotionally invested. He definitely gets the blood pumping... sometimes for the wrong reasons. But that's what makes it exciting.

Common sense is a subjective term. I preffer the universal sense that life is about balance and not winning everything or having everything you want. Only Federer could know what is best for him the same way I cant claim what is best for you
I simply assumed he played to win, not lose.

Hence he'd be better of or happier if he'd won those matches.

Simple.

That you want to rationalize your weird logic by involving the cosmos, instead of just admitting that RF would rather win a match than lose one, is of course you choice...

Can you rank these in terms of heartbreak? Of course the top three would have to include 40-15 and 2010-2011 match points blown to The Djoker.
:(
If I had to rank Fed's most heartbreaking losses by year I'd say:
1. 2019 Wimbledon Finals (lost to Djokovic) - yea it doesn't get worse than this :cautious:
2. 2008 Wimbledon Finals (lost to Nadal) - it doesn't get more devastating than this...until what happened above
3. 2009 Australian Open Finals (lost to Nadal) - Fed's reaction after the match says it all
4. 2014 Wimbledon Finals (lost to Djokovic) - at the time, this looked like Fed's very last chance at a slam
5. 2011 US Open Semifinals (lost to Djokovic) - beating 2011 Djokovic in 2 GS matches would've been quite a feat even if he ended up losing to Rafa in both finals
6. 2005 Australian Open Semifinals (lost to Safin) - One more point and he would've played Hewitt in the finals for another slam (easy win given the track record)
7. 2018 Wimbledon Quarterfinals (lost to Anderson) - one pt from it being a straight set win and remain on course to another Wimby title, but somehow Kandyman came all the way back
8. 2010 US Open Finals (lost to Djokovic) - he looked ready to challenge Rafa in the finals but couldn't convert on either MP
9. 2016 Wimbledon Finals (lost to Raonic) - not sure if he would've beat Murray in the finals but losing to Raonic of all ppl in a GS semi stings like s***
10. 2007 French Open Finals (lost to Nadal) - I swear he was like 1 for 5000 in BPs
11. 2006 Rome Finals (lost to Nadal) - had two MPs to win one of the more important Masters tourneys; this would be a lot higher if it was a major
12. 2015 US Open Finals (lost to Djokovic) - similar to the '07 French finals, Fed was like 3 for 9000 BPs
13. 2012 Olympic Finals (lost to Murray) - worked his a** off to get to the OLY finals and achieve his gold medal dream...just to get smoked by Muzzah
14. 2013 Wimbledon R2 (lost to Sergiy) - first time in nearly a decade where he lost before the quarters, and it was at his fav slam nonetheless
15. 2003 Australian Open R4 (lost to Nalbandian) - tough five-set loss, could've challenged for the title given the parity in tennis back then
16. 2017 WTF Semifinals (lost to Goffin) - likely would've won a 7th WTF but lost to Goffin of all players. 2017 was easily Fed's best year in terms of big match performance since 2008
17. 2004 Olympics (lost to Berdych) - don't really remember this match, but how in the world did Fed lose to a 19-year old Birdman

Nothing before 2003 really matters as he wasn't a top player yet

2005-2011 really is an impressive streak of heartbreakers

How about:

2003 - Rome Final vs Felix Mantilla 57,26,67
2010 - Canada Final vs Andy Murray 57,57
2010 - Shanghai Final vs Andy Murray 36,26
2013 - Australian Open 1/2 Final vs Andy Murray 46,76,36,76,26

Now aren't you being a bit too much pro-Murray?

Losses against Murray are usually more annoying than tough.

I would def. prefer YER No.1 over potential Davis Cup.
Remember, lost against Hewitt was in 1/2 final. And still even if he won Australia would probably won 3-2.
Philippoussis would surely beat Kratochvill,Rosset or whoever played at that time.

That loss vs Roddick was pretty much key loss for No.1 YER.

Legacy wise sure the YE #1 was big but I'm pretty sure even recently Federer has named that Davis Cup loss as one of his all time hardest.

There is no doubt for those that have followed Federer closely that the 2003 Davis Cup loss to Hewitt was the heartbreaker of the year for him, probably of his career up until the Wimby 2008 final at least.

Aren't you being a bit too much anti-Murray? Why are losses to him inferior to losses against anybody else??

Nothing personal against Murray, but when I think of Fed's toughest losses usually losses against Nadal and Djokovic come to mind. Partly because he's played more high profile matches against them than against Murray, and because he has choked matches away a lot more times against them.

it’s close, but when Roger got asked this year what match would he most want to replay, he said the USO 09 final
That’s because it was a winneable match and most of all, it’s the only time he’s lost at a slam final to someone not named Nadal or Djokovic. That was a big missed opportunity in many ways. I’m sure Nadal would’ve loved a do-over on the ‘14 finals more than in some of his losses against Djokovic.

Federer, unfortunately, has brought us many more disappointments in the last 10 years than enjoyments. And it's not going to get better from this point on.

Nothing will ever surpass dropping this last Wimbledon with 2 MP's serving for it! It really could be Roger's last chance! He's been very lucky to have not been upset more than that one against Stakhovsky back in '13 in the 2nd Round! This past Wimbledon final, he dropped 3 TB's of all things committing 11 UFE's to Nole's 0 UFE's! This is on grass where he's supposed to be the "Grass GOAT" with 8 Wimbledons, but unfortunately for him he's blown 4 finals between him and Nadovic! :sneaky:

40-15 was the worst. Has to be ranked #1 on the heartbreak list. Very close behind were the MP's blown at U.S. Open to Djoker.
That's three lost to Djoker after achieving MP in a Slam Final or SF.
Has Djoker ever lost after gaining MP in a Slam? Can't remember any. Certainly not deep into a Slam like Fed.
Fed also blew MP against Anderson in last year's Wimbledon QF. Anderson?!
Along with the 20 wins, there have been a lot of ugly losses at Slams since 2011.
Very winnable matches where he failed to close it out :(.
