I do think it's funny. I think Brennwald's still annoyed Roger wanted to buy out the tournament from him so he's finding different ways of taking out the grudge.
Anyway, doesn't matter. No way the Swiss were going to fill the stands to see Nadal instead of Roger there.

He would never do that. Basel is his hometown! He was a ballboy for that tournament. Its pretty personal for him.

I suspect there are a lot of unknowns in this situation. I doubt Federer is actually playing without some consideration if his peers are - no matter the local links.

Similarly, I would not be surprised if a couple of his Swiss sponsors - Credit Suisse, Jura and Lindt for example - don't have as part of his sponsorship agreement that he must play tournament in Switzerland a certain amount of times. It would be in their interest for the point of making sure he's available for local sponsorship engagements and promotion at least once every so often during a tournament.

In short, don't believe everything you read is the whole picture here (or in any sponsorship discussion/comments by interested parties).
