Roger Federer's PERfect Tournament | Cincinnati 2015 Title Run

Oceans II

Professional
No sets dropped and unbroken against Bautista Agut, Anderson, Lopez, Murray and Djokovic.

Federer played a ridiculous level of tennis around this period which prompted Lopez to say that Federer was "fking flying all over the court"
and
Federer himself to say “I think I'm a better player now than when I was at 24 because I've practised for another 10 years and I've got 10 years more experience. Maybe I don't have the confidence level that I had at 24 when I was winning 40 matches in a row, but I feel like I hit a bigger serve, my backhand is better, my forehand is still as good as it's ever been, I volley better than I have in the past. I think I've had to adapt to a new generation of players again.”

Federer and Cincinnati go together like wine and cheese.

Even in his worst year, since 2003, in 2013, carrying an injury to his back from IW on, he still pushed the winner of that event who was playing the best HC tennis of his life to a deciding set.

Some places you simply just click. Faster courts, lower bounces are right up Federer's alley.

Fed played his best tennis from Wimbledon 2015 till USO 2015

34 years old and he was still miles clear of everyone including Peak Djokovic on fast courts. For fast court tennis ATGs it goes Pete, Fed, then a massive gap to the rest

That is because Federer is one of the most aggressive players of all time, he is always looking to go in for the kill. The mindset is a big part of it. And Djokovic is no chopped liver on fast courts, he is only second to Federer this era and there is no shame in that.

For reference, Federer also beat Djokovic in Dubai and the ATP finals in 2015.

I always wondered why their 2015 rivalry was close in BO3 but not in Slams.

Surely, it cannot be a decrease in stamina from Federer. Federer was "only" 33 in the W 2015 final and had just turned 34 in the USO final. A 37 years old Federer showed no signs of being tired in the longest W final ever in 2019, so his stamina was on point in 2015 when he reached the W and USO finals, respectively, without dropping a set in the semifinals.

Djokovic has a mindblowing ability to display clutch play when it matters the most. GOAT stuff from Novak and I'm not a Novak fan but his ability to raise the level in Slams is phenomenal and should be praised.

Now that I think so, this was a thread for Federer and here I'm prasing Novak. Sorry if this comment was out of place.

Djokovic was simply better in the slams in 2015. That was a peak year for him.

Federer got one year older from Wimbledon to USO? :D

You answer yourself. With age, you become less consistent over time, and it's easier to perform well in BO3. Also players don't always peak in the final. Nadal played great tennis at AO until Djokovic beat him in straights. Djokovic played great at USO until Medvedev beat him in straights. Djokovic played great until Stan beat him at RG. It's different now with Novak and Rafa, because they face a generation of players who have hardly been in a slam final, while Federer played peak Djokovic with all his powers and experience. Perhaps the best player ever.

I thought both finals were competitive, btw. Every point felt important in those matches and Federer, as always, struggled to convert BPs.

Oh for sure. Not meant as a slight on Djoker at all, more just for context

… And people still forget he was pretty damn old for a tennis player then, six years after the end of his prime, as well as being SIX years older than Djokovic. Truly the GOAT!

I agree. Past peak fed > peak Djoko on HC.

Djokovic at same age was getting straight setted by Mad lad at USO.

McEnroe, Lendl, Becker were pretty good on that kind of surface too, don't you think?

This is why I find it funny when I read these “peak Federer vs Peak Djokovic at Wimby/USO” threads.

Don’t need hypotheticals, because all of those matches happened, in 2015. Peak Djokovic won in 4.

I took that for granted. I really did.

Now it's like listening to your favorite tracks for the 500th time, there's always highlights on youtube.

Confidence and clutch is huge, but so is playing style. Federer is something of a hybrid between PETE and Andre in the sense that like Andre he enjoys constructing points in a gradually pressuring way that eventually becomes disruptive like PETE was from the get go. He made this transition extremely well and left his opponents feeling like fools afterwards. Remember Kyrgios recently said Federer has the ability to make you feel really bad and small because of how quick things go. This is why he had so much success as a 30+ year old.

Novak though is a systemic anomaly to this, like Rafa. While everyone else gradually crumbles under Rodger's assault, they seemed to gradually get stronger. Rafa faster and more intense, Novak's depth and weight of shot increasing. Combine that with the greater clutch and confidence, and you have a disaster in the making.

Does it mean that Feddy the genius doesn't know how to reinvent himself and adapt?

Same as Nadal adapting to "fast" indoor at the masters right? Ffs Federer beat him on the blue clay of Madrid that was just a bit faster than usual and he went crying to Tiriac to change the surface...

Federer is the big 3 member that adapted the most to the changing conditions of the tour that did not favour his game at all. Nadal and Djokovic had a tailor made tour for almost their whole careers playing to their strenghts most of the year.

Incredible level of tennis. Lopez's backhand is genuinely great for laughs. Looks like a surfer when hitting his slice lol

None of the courts Fed has played on as a world #1 were fast. They were medium-slow, and at best, medium-fast.

The massive gap is between PETE, Becker, Mac, Lendl, and then Fed and friends. Federer has actually failed quite often on one of the only "fast" courts on the tour, winning it just once. He is not in the same stratosphere as Becker and Lendl, let alone Pete.

Without a doubt Federer is the most versatile and can adapt the most on changing conditions. He's at his best on fast court, but when the tour introduce slow courts and heavier ball, Federer had to learn to adapt to the unfavorable conditions. Nadalovic are lucky that homogenized courts suits perfectly for their playing style

Fed probably actually reinvented himself the most considering he’s played in more generations than any of the other Big 3 members, had to adjust to a multitude of court speeds and surfaces, and has beaten Nadal in every match after 2014. He just got unlucky to be 6 years older than Djokodal + not having the opportunity to play in the Career Inflation Era

Rodger didn't play from 2016-21, and win 3 majors in the process? Someone needs to let him know there is an imposter going around with his name, body, and tennis skills winning trophies claiming to be him!
