Retails left, customs right - Roger’s customs are wider compared to the retails.

Retails

A significant difference is the outsole. Roger has stuck to the Nike Vapor Speed outsole design (or at least some variation of it) whereas the retails has the herringbone pattern outsole.

WAIT! Does he have custom insoles?

I also think his shoes are custom-made to be softer and less stiff than the retail. Doesnt make sense to have to go through a painful break-in session EACH time he enters a tournament with different colored shoes.

That carbon shank is on the retail Kobe Zoom Air IV's. Couldn't have been that hard to incorporate into the Vapor's. The Kobe's have the same pricepoint and less flywire.

Thanks Raidenx...I hope so :)

featherlight - sorry man, it's too much work, and I don't have a similar retail vapor 5 to do a meaningful comparison.

Wow, they use some high-end materials like carbon fibers to make them very light. Retail version is a pure cr4p - super stiff and heavy...

Carbon fiber cost $$$$$

Fabfed, have you put them on yet? How does it feel compared to retail?

Bob, I have to disagree with you there. The vapors are stiff when new but break in well and they're super light-there's not much lighter out there. My 9.5's only weigh 410g and are super quick.

You are very welcome to disagree as much as you like :) That is why we call this place 'forum' :) IMO, Vapor V is the best tennis shoe ever produced and 5 notches above vapor VI...

The vapor V's were awesome, and I agree>> the best of this line.

That said, the Vapor VI are comfortable and soft once they break in. My "break in time" was minimal 1-2 days.

Good point, the 6's were my first vapors.

I've always used the breathe cages and ballistecs. The cages were nice and light but Ballistecs just got too bulky IMO.

the VI's fit my feet better in the front v. the V's... that's for me... the deal breaker (hate the bubbling though)

...and i have to agree, break in was short... now the sweetest tennis shoe i've worn (better than the Max Air white/maroon/navy from 1991-1992) :)

I would love to see FabFeds threads with the shoes/racquets/shirts etc, but the pictures on photobucket have expired or been removed on most of them. Any chance of a repost? Especially interested in Nadals racquet.

These threads are brilliant.

Also see the photos of the outsoles of Roger’s custom Vapor Vs for a comparison with the custom Vapor 6.

But the most surprising difference, and this struck me the very moment I got the parcel containing the shoes, is the weight. It is so much lighter than the retail version. As you can see from the comparative photos, Roger’s custom Size 12 shoes are lighter even than the retail version of the same shoes in Size 9! (As the retail shoes are new, I removed the cardboard mold inside before I weighed them, just in case some of you guys are wondering if that added weight). Granted the custom shoes have burnt a bit of rubber as they are used, but I doubt Roger used a single pair for the 3-4 day matches he had at the USO, and the wear would also be negligible weight wise.

Hope this comparison has been useful – do correct me if I’m factually wrong or you have some other views. Personally, and I may be stating the obvious, I think the custom shoes are a lot nicer than the retail versions. :)

Did I ever tell you ... I love You , LOL .
