Rohan Bopanna to become the #1 in ATP Doubles for the first time at the age of 43

This is pretty astounding.

Last year Bopanna broke the record for being the oldest Masters champion at the age of 43 when he and Matthew Ebden (aged 36) won Indian Wells. He also became the oldest male to win a match at the 2023 ATP Finals when he and Ebden defeated Hijakata/Kubler.

Now after their win in the Australian Open QF, he will be the new #1.

He is not a reigning slam champ nor has he won one before so unless he wins this AO he will be a slamless #1 however.

But kudos to Bopanna!

Bopanna/Ebden with a huge shot to win the slam here with the QF exits in the top half from the #8 seeds Krawietz/Puetz and also #7 seeds Nys/Zielinski. Both teams lost to unseeded opponents meaning Bopanna/Ebden the only seeds left in the tournament.

Forget about doubles. Nobody cares about doubles. India needs to invest into the development a singles champion.

And Nagal is not it. He is a joke.

Can't recall a great singles player since Ramesh Krishna

Vijay A. was very overrated. Was more interested in making stupid Police Academy Krishna

Spot on.

Indian government should support and develop a singles champion.

And no little Nagal is not it. What a joke little Nagal is.

Can't recall an elite ATP Top 10 Indian singles player since Ramesh Krishnan.

This is the most powerful effortless OHBH you will ever see.

He was one of the most elegant players to watch

What was the dealio with Bopanna, Bhupathi and Paes back in the day? I remember reading a lot of teen girl love triangle stuff around the 2012 Olympics

I knew Paes and Bhupathi fell out and got back together a couple of times but I have no idea why, or how Bopanna got involved

I saw a story about how someone made a documentary about the drama between Bhupathi and Paes. Never saw it, though.

He has the serve, strokes and quicks even at 43. Nice.

I feel he wasted many years teaming with Shapovalov in doubles. I watched their match in IW and Shapo was just flashy , all over the place, missing many critical points, just trying to put up a show instead on having a gameplan.
Im glad Rohan moved away from Shapo and stuck to a player who plays within his limits and uses his brains.

Kudos to both Rohan and Ebden on reaching joint #1

Lee and Hesh supposedly had a fight over a girl in a bar. Anyways, that is what I vaguely remember reading.

Rohan looked slow and old. this is likely his last year playing. his racket head speed was so slow that all the routine groundies from Zhang and Matkic, he had problems handling them.

Being 35 myself I am loving this. Mind you I'm still missing an ACL but even so I'm keeping in shape and seeing stuff like this definitely makes me want to do regional tournaments until I'm 60.

I like his story about having no cartilage in his knees, so he took a specific type of yoga (can't recall which type).

Wake me up when he does something in singles. Doubles doesn't count - even I can play doubles.
If he wins, he will be the oldest male to win a grand slam. Current holder, Rojer was 40. He is already the oldest Masters 1000 winner.

You don't even have a tourney win.

They should have closed them out when they were up 4-2. He did look slower vs. those two, but to be fair so did Ebden and yet they still tucked the juniors to bed.

I remember he was a partner/coach for Shapo during that time period. He was often seen in Shapo's box for singles matches. Most likely making more money now being a successful dubs player than taking a percentage of Shapo's earnings.

It was over a bollywood actress I think...anyways both great doubles players but with huge egos. Don't think they ever interacted outside the court
