Ok we need polls, now when draws are up and the tournament is about to start.

Here is the women's draw:
http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/scores/draws/ws/index.html

Safina and Serena have tough draws, while Venus was lucky this time.

Favorites by quarters:

1. Safina, Azarenka, Ivanovic
2. Venus, Mauresmo, Zvonareva,
3. Dementieva, Jankovic, Wozniacki
4. Serena, Kuznetsova, Radwanska

Judging by the current form, Safina and Kuznetsova are in the best shape to win the tournament.
I hope Ivanovic and Janovic will wake up and find their form from last year.
Also I doubt Serena or Venus will go very far here.

Drama-vic will not win this one, nor will any player IMO who uses on the court coaching, apart from maybe Safina, as she is such a fighter.

I agree Kuzzy is also a great bet.

Venus could get very far also, I'm not sure about Serena at the moment.

i have a feeling venus or serena will win this one... if not Jelena Jankovic or Ana Ivanovic

Venus, doubtful. If she does it will only reinforce how poor the state of womens tennis is right now considering Venus's one French Open final previously was do to a terribly lucky draw like the one she has here. Serena...her draw is terrible. I think Serena will be lucky if she gets to the quaters, personally I am hoping Pennetta gets to the quarters here. Jankovic might, she needs to shape up, whatever she added in the off season hasn't worked out so well but the french is probably the major she has the best shot of winning after the US Open and I am hoping she does well. Ana is no where near where she was last year, when she made the Aussie final, won indian wells and came in in a spir of good results. She likely won't get past the quarters if she even gets there, although I have hope for her.

My list to watch:

1. Safina- Playing phenominal since taking the top spot, if she continues here, could she win it this time? Possibly, the top half is arguably easier and all the other big threats are in the bottom, playing well she should be able to make the final

2. Kuznetsova- God never thought I'd say that, but she has been doing well lately, if she keeps it up, she could stir it up in Paris

3. Dementieva- A good clay courter, I wish she was in the top half of the draw though, she has a tough road.

4.Jankovic- almost made the final last year, hoping she can recapture the magic

5. Azarenka- has the drive and confidence, and if she is clicking she could bounce Safina.

question: why is this tournament not called "french open" instead of "roland garros"?

The tournament is named after French WW I pilot.

Here is the story:

These Musketeers need a stadium!
1927 was a milestone for French tennis, the year the celebrated French Musketeers (Jacques "Toto" Brugnon, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet and René Lacoste) pulled off one of the biggest shocks in 20th century sport. The famous foursome upset all the odds by winning the Davis Cup on American soil, and in doing so set up a rematch in 1928, in Paris. Obviously, such a major sporting occasion required a stadium worthy of its stature, and so it was that the Stade Français handed over three hectares of land near Porte d'Auteuil to the French Tennis Federation. The only condition to the offer of land was that the new stadium should bear the name of one of Stade Français' most renowned former members, Roland-Garros, who had died some ten years earlier. Roland-Garros was an aviation pioneer who, on 23 September 1913, had become the first man to fly a plane over the Mediterranean. The 1928 French Internationals were the first event to be held in the new stadium, just before the Musketeers took centre-stage to beat the Americans in their long-awaited rematch.

started wondering how many american women were playing at the roland garros. answer: not very many!!!

CRAYBAS, Jill USA
EMBREE, Lauren [W] USA
GLATCH, Alexa USA
GULLICKSON, Carly [Q] USA
LEPCHENKO, Varvara USA
MATTEK-SANDS, Bethanie USA
WILLIAMS, Venus [3] USA
WILLIAMS, Serena [2] USA

... Did I miss any?

From what I can see Zvonareva has pulled out of the tournament. LL Katie O'brien took her spot. Venus' quarter is a real joke now.

It feels a bit strange.. I was closely following the third round match of qualifiers between Aranxta Rus (from my country, the Netherlands) and Katie O'brien.. It feels weird now that it wouldn't have mattered had Aranxta lost, because she'd be a lucky loser any way.

the draw is actually pretty interesting imo.

Safina has a couple of potentially tough matches; as a brit I'll be interested to see how Keothavong does in the first round against her. I do think Safina has to be the favourite now, but a possible 1/4 vs Vika could be tough.

Venus doesn't really have that easy a 1/4, firstly I could see Lisicki causing some problems if she was to get through her first round, and if Mauresmo can keep her decent run of form up maybe she could pose a threat. Of course lurking in there is Masha as well, I wouldn't expect much of her but you never know once the GS juices get pumping.

The third 1/4 is pretty tight, I don't really know who's 1/4 to refer to it as actually. I quite fancy Woz to go through given her recent good form and finals appearance in madrid, but JJ and Dementieva are definitely tough opposition, particularly if things are working for them.

Fourth quarter has some potentially fun match ups in it too, I really hope Kuzzy pulls through in it, she's been playing well enough to imo. Schynder could cause a few problems though, she's had a couple of decent results lately. Finally down there is the big ol' Serena question, can she miraculously find some form, will she go out in a ball of flames, you never really know xD

semi's

Safina vs Mauresmo
Wozniaki vs Kuznetsova

finals

Safina vs Kuznetsova

winner

Safina

My head says Safina, my heart says stop women's tennis now or don't broadcast it ever again and show us some men's tennis

Errani just hit a fantastic pass, she's been doing some great retrieving too, just about hanging in there

==

Errani doing more than just hanging in now, she'll serve for the first set.

==

Ivanovic manages to break back though, 5-all on serve.

==

Ivanovic managed to find a set point but Errani saved it with a great dropper! She then found a great volley to close the game to take it to a tiebreak

==

Ivanovic having a bit of luck at the start of the breaker and Errani unable to get back into it, first set Ivanovic

Ivanovic really is annoying with this stupid fist pump crap. And the ball mark thing in the breaker was total bs. I hope she loses. She doesn't deserve it playing as crap as she is right now.

Lol! I was just thinking that as I'm watching her... right now.

ivanovic has, without doubt, the most pathetic, piffling fist pump i've ever seen. it's the fist pump of someone who has never made a fist in anger, never even practised throwing a punch, a fist-pump which takes its significance from being a pose, a learned mechanic, a representation of a fight, rather than any genuine combatorial challenge it might pose to the opposition. hewitt or nadal look like they'd take your head off when they explode into theirs, it looks somewhat genuine, warrior-like. it makes ivanovic look like a child.

lol i third this, as you can see! i've also just got the hang of multi-quote, nearly 2,000 posts in. breakthrough!

I'll fourth the fist-pump frustration, it really does seem to be an almost entirely emotionally empty gesture.

With that said, I have to confess that I think the tennis has been pretty entertaining so far

it's not bad, the bounce is highlighted when you have players struggling to control it and being forced into moonballs, which is making me more appreciative of how unique RG is even among clay courts. Being able to watch it on a tv instead of a computer screen like i have since AO is nice as well! but karlovic has taken the first set of hewitt, and i want to see that 140mph serve bounce on clay!

And the shame of it is, as crap as she is, her opponent is so crap she can't take advantage. Ivanovic can't toss the ball to serve, has no bh, and is only winning b/c of her fh.

And don't forget about the weak "ajee"'s and "cmons". Lleyton Hewitt is rolling in his grave. (and yes i know he's not dead. nor do i wish he was) Imagine her attempting the lawnmower lol.

i'd love to see it. i think you're a bit harsh on her backhand though, it's a solid shot, if not a winners machine.

^ yeah, her bh isn't that bad, IMO...

Lol, her fist-pumps don't really bother me, but I can see how people will find it irritating.

BTW, how does that knee-tape of hers work? its just on the front part (not a wrap-around, so not for compression I assume?)...

She's stepped it up in the 2nd, but the 1st set she was moonballing the bh. If Errani was smart and hit to the bh more, maybe she'd won the set. Besides the fact she faced 500 bp's.

UPDATE: Errani breaks Ivanovic. Now 5-3 in the 2nd. Eranni serving

really not sure, i remember ginepri having a similar arrangement on his arm, maybe last year. maybe it pulls on the skin and by extension prevents a particularly muscle being agitated by rubbing against something else?

that was a pretty good rally. i'd quite like verdasco to get on though....

lleyton two sets down against ivo? crikey....

It sounds like this womens tournament is off to the rousing start we all expect from womens tennis these days.

Yes, now that you mention it... Ginepri... I also remember Justine Henin having the same sort of 'wrap' on her leg a while back... your theory makes sense... just wanted to get a clarification...

Who cares, she's hot and very easy on the eye.
BTW anybody watching the match against Johansson Vs Diachenko? These girls are absolute glamours! But Diachenko squeals like a pig when she hits her shots.
