Devilder starts with a break in the 4th, Wawrinka is in big trouble.

make that a double break, Stan is in freefall

==

and then Stan breaks back to love...maybe he found a parachute

==

and then Devilder breaks again...guess Stans chute failed, does he have a backup

==

Wawa deploys his back-up shute, still one break down though

==

This time it works, Wawa holds and then breaks again to get back level

==

Wawrinka holds again to get to 5-4

^are you watching it? If not that seems rather harsh on both guys.

Wawa does somehow manage to steal the set, gotta fancy him for the decider

I'm watching Nadal and Wawrinka matches. Wawrinka was an UE machine in the 3rd and the 4th. Devilder got tight when he was up a double break in the 4th and had the match in his pocket. I don't care who wins. Davydenko and Verdasco would be tougher for Nadal in the quarters so it wouldn't change anything if Wawrinka loses.

Rafa definitely looks bad right now. I admit I am a bit worried about him, although this is the first round.

I think he's rusty and his opponent is playing above his standards. It's gonna be a straight sets win anyway. I think Nadal will play better in the next rounds.

I hope so, and you are probably right. I am probably jumping the gun a bit in my reaction. I wouldnt normally but Madrid, although I realize all the circumstance against him there, has me a bit more on edge going into this event then normal. His opponents is playing very well too though, nothing to lose and going for his shots bigtime.

ps: in no time there will pop a thread or 2 about how loud her screams are... while all these tennis experts will overlook her tennis skills...

Does anyone else find profoundly irritating that the Tennis Channel broadcasters said they would be showing the Roddick match immediately after Federer got done, and say they're about to cut over to it before every advertisement break and after every other match they cover ends, yet always find some women's or obscure men's match to cut to instead and have yet to show a single point of it?

Roddick playing very well against a guy who's playing above his ranking. he's hitting with some really good depth on his backhand, his movement is good, and the most underrated player in tennis will soon be heading into round 2 by the looks of things.

wahoo Chardy is up a double break in his first set, Allez!!

also agree that Roddick is playing well

Fognini up a break at the start of his match vs Andreev

Berdych has won sets 3 and 4 to take things to a decider with Bolelli!

Fognini has broken Andreev again, he leads 4-0 in the first

That was a good looking backhand return from Roddick. Unbelievable, I know.

which one? He's had a couple of nice ones where he's stepped in on deuce court serves and knocked them dtl before closing on the net.

Andy looking like he's heading through comfortably anyway ^^

Fognini just breadsticked Andreev

Strong start for Roddick- 35 winners and only eight unforced errors, per the website. He looked confident, comfortable, and light on his feet. On the other hand, of course, this opponent was a low-ranking wildcard who was clearly in over his head. Roddick should face a tougher test in his next match, which will be against one of two solid tour-level clay courters in Minar and Hernandez.

one of the frustrating things about coverage in the first week is that there are so many matches going on. when the occasional dogfight occurs, usually tennis channel doesn't go to it and sticks with the yanks. feli lopez is in a dogfight. so is berd. but they stick with ginepri (god only knows why).

luckily at rg, the americans usually flame out early, so this tv strategy is relatively short-lived.

Wow, Roddick beat #305 ranked player. What an achievement. :roll:

if he'd been beaten you'd have been crowing over it. you can only beat what's put in front of you- he couldn't exactly have beaten the world no. 20 today now could he? :roll:

No he could not. But I just find all this awe about today's Roddick's game quite funny, considering who was his opponent.

roddick isn't even relevant at rg, as far as i'm concerned. it made me chuckle though when gimelstob (the tool) babbled about roddick's "advantageous" draw and predicted that he would get into the second week. only a genius like gimelstob would made such a daring prediction on air: 'player a has an easy draw and will make it into the second week!'

oh really? gee, thanks for that.

Sometimes when I see Roddick play he brings back the spirit of Mac and Jimmy. I suppose it is because he is American, but he is a fighter and bless him he never gives up. He said a year or two back that clay was a mystery to him and he found it hard. However here he is back again and giving it another go with all he has got.

Just got back from RG, watched the Sharapova and Chardy matches on Court 1... the court was slow as usual....on TV it looks way faster...and on the metro going back home i was sitting in the same carriage where Andy Murray's coach, Miles Maclagan was. :)

All in all, i had a very enjoyable day. :D

Not really a big deal in the total scheme of things, but its tied up between Andreev and Fognini 2 all 5 set. Just was a minor drama as Igor lost his contact lense on his eyeball and spent several minutes trying to find it. Was wondering if Fognini would loss his temper, and was looking a bit like he was getting irritated, with just cause as this was basically an equipment problem not an injury time out or something like that, yet the officials were allowing it to go on while Fognini was waiting to serve all this time.
