Halep's hug with Cahill who has been with her for all the ups and downs.

YESSSSS. so happy!! and she did it the hard way, set and a break down to an in form opponent/reigning slam champ.

so who is the next player who is never going to win a grand slam??

Might as well consider this the last day of RG. Nadal is going to cream Thiem tomorrow. Feel sorry for the lad.

You have to hand it to Halep. This was a match she would have lost in the past. Stephens started off at a blistering level and her defense to offense was ridiculous. She really didn't give Halep a chance for a set and a half. But I knew her level would have to drop at some point and that's when Halep struck and implemented her aggressive strategy, as well as draining Stephens in long extended rallies. It was really something to watch. Stephens won the sprint but Halep won the long distance race and the title. Entertaining match.

Andrea Petkovic tweets this

For all the haters who said she‘ll never win a Slam because she‘s mentally weak, go choke on that. Everyone has their own timing and supposed failures are often just stepping stones in an individual‘s life.

Great work by killer cahill.. nearly the best coach in the family... nearly...

Great final, simonas mental strength, learning from the mistakes made in the past and sheer will to win got her over the line. Great stuff.

I had a lot of doubts this time last year when it comes to Halep, felt like she was mostly just a backboard at that tournament waiting for things to happen. But as this French Open progressed I was getting confident, because when she shows all of her abilities and shotmaking like now, she is a stunning player to watch and a worthy world number 1. Congratulations to her on finally winning that Slam title, so well deserved.
