Roland Garros 2024 Contenders

The original post looks good still. But just lacking Sinner. Sinner probably will come at the third spot right now behind Raz and Djokovic.

I just feel he will get outlasted
By who? Do you trust Nadal/Djokovic/Sinner/Rune’s fitness more than Z? I don’t. After last year it’s not a slam dunk that Carlos holds up better than him though I think he would. Z help up physically in the AO semis too I don’t think that’ll be a big hurdle for him against most of the top guys. Ruud/Stef I could see wearing him down but that’s honestly it.

Draw will be huge this year because I think so many of the top guys are match up dependent. I favor Z against all the guys who play mostly closed court tennis but against Raz/Stef I’ll take them. Where Medvedev lands in the draw will be a big deal.

Stef has almost no chance vs Alcaraz. But he can beat both Sinner and Zverev.

This RG can be very draw dependent as you said.

Depends if Djokovic AO 24 carries on as a slump but if he finds somewhat decent form I would favour him over Zverev even at this stage and probably the same with Sinner too. Like you say it could be draw dependant and based on a few things.

Going in with lower expectations with Nadal for obvious reasons at this stage.

1. Novak Djokovic - 3 time Roland Garros champion, won 2 of the last 3 titles and lost third to eventual winner. Has taken apart Nadal Tsitsipas Ruud Zverev and Alcaraz who are all on the LIST.

2. Carlos Alcaraz - 20 years old with 7 clay titles. Already won 2 Madrid titles and 2 Barcelona titles. Could have pushed Djokovic last year but body gave up on him. He has beaten Tsitsipas from this list but being the youngest player of the group, he definitely has time on his side.

3. Rafael Nadal - He is coming back, perhaps for the final time. He has to prove he can play at his best again but clay gives him superpowers. In 2022, when he was looking bad, he beat 3 players from this list to win the title. Overall he has beaten Djokovic a gazillion times, Zverev and Ruud here.

4. Alexander Zverev - He has made semifinals in last 3 editions. In 2021, he was beaten by Tsitsipas who is on this list, in 2022 he beat Alcaraz who is on the list but got injured vs Nadal, in 2023 he had very poor performance vs Ruud who is on this list. But 3 straight semis, he is a formidable force. He is also the guy who beat Alcaraz in 2022 and now knows he can beat Alcaraz in a grinding match. He has also won Madrid/Rome before.

5. Stefanos Tsitsipas - This guy is figuratively taking crap from the entire tennis community right now. His best days might not be over though, he is only 25. He has shown he can beat Zverev who is on this list, he was 2 sets up vs Djokovic but lost in the end. The match was high quality. Tsitsipas also has 2 Monte Carlo titles and has been in QF or better in 3 of the last 4 years.

6. Casper Ruud - Now hear me out. This guy is probably the worst on this list. But he has proven to be consistent on the surface like David Ferrer. Two slam finals even through a puffy draw are not anything to scoff at. He has more finals here than anyone not named Djokovic or Nadal. He will need a lot of help from the draw but he puts himself in there just by showing consistency.

I am removing Sinner and Rune from this list. Even though Rune in 2022 beat Tsitsipas and Sinner has at least shown his base level is in top 4 right now, I think both are not ready to win Roland Garros and would be shocked if that happened.
Sinner has a real chanche
Just my opinion

Medvedev is out of the mix, until he can prove capable of winning on clay. Has Med won anything on clay?

Sinner is another question mark, Djokovic is iffy because clay requires physical exertion. So if Rafa is healthy, he's capable of it.

And so we go on to Madrid. Honestly, seeing today's match, my confidence in Nadal is down a lot. Still see him as a contender but is he above Zverev and Tsitsipas?

Let's see.

I think Alcz if he is healthy (looked good in the 1st round today).

Ruud is still a fave of mine on clay, and going forward as a top 3 guy.

I give Sinner a solid shot too really.

Meddy will definitely give it his all and can make a decent run at it.

Zverev: "Put myself there".
:giggle:

djokovic level has dropped a bit, however this is bo5. Not sure who can beat him other than a health alcaraz , maybe sinner if the clay is playing fast.

Based on the results as of today, I would make some adjustments.

1. Alcaraz
2. Sinner

3. Djokovic

4. Nadal

Sinner has gone to top 2 contenders imo now. He is just crushing the entire field.

He is fighting against kotov and might not win
Sinner has some issues in the back today and he still won without losing a set. He saved setpoint. He broke the opponent 2 times when down 5-3 to win 7-5 in the end.

Let's not make fun of this man any longer. He is not as much a favorite as Carlos but he is right behind.

I would actually put him above novak and Alcaraz and I think the betting sites should put In-form players at the top of the bettings not the highly ranked players.

I also think it is very biased since they put Rune above Zverev, like What?! Why?! wheres his good performances this year, he litterally dropped out of the top 10 and you put him above a top 5 player who made your tournament's semifinals 3 times in a row and might even have won it one year if he wasn't injured.

No idea why he should be number 1 favorite. If you are trolling then ok.

But sinner is ranked above Carlos in the world ranking already and Djokovic is barely hanging on till RG..

Rune has not shown he will even make a slam finals. I don't know why he is rated as high as he is by oddsmakers. You are right.

I would not even take his bid as serious in BO5 right now. He may be talented but he has a lot of room to grow up and in BO5 that gets exposed.

odds are also influenced by bet value amounts, they don't just follow statistical predictions

Zverev above Tsitsipas and especially Ruud?
:cautious:

Zverev is a far more accomplished player than Ruud who just won his first title above 250, so I don't know how it would be a surprise. Tsitsipas can be argued over him but the margins are slim and Zverev's match against Nadal before he got injured was a top performance and he has beaten Alcaraz in this tournament too.

Ruud humiliated him last year, he has two finals at RG to none from Zverev there.
Tsitsipas beat him in the 2021 edition, when both were fighting to play in their first final on the clay of Paris and has his number every time they face each other on clay.
:D

ruud beat him because he was recovering from his injury and those two finals were extremely lucky and tsitsipas could be argued but tsitsipas is not very consistant
