Djokovic or Zverev?

Total domination. Zed dominated in every area, he could not have had a more impressive first ms1000 final victory.

Fun stat: Total points won were 64-48, almost exactly the same as in Djoko's last loss on clay When Rafa dismantled DJoko at Madrid (65-48 points).

Remember 2014?
I think he means that if Rafa somehow makes it to week 2 avoiding big hitters, I know highly unlikely that will happen because historically last few years he meets big servers reguarly. If he can make it to QF then it frees him up. Remember Federer has put pressure on himself to win the whole thing, Nadal has nothing to lose and everything to gain. It can make him play freely and at his best. I would agree that it makes Nadal a very dangerous player come second week.

Figured out he is the real deal when first time I watched him. Another youngster I believe has great potential is Kokkinakis. Rest are mugs (Raonic, Dimitrov, Kyrgios etc).

You know, I really want Djokovic to find his form again. I don't like to see any player in poor form... it can make tennis cringe worthy... But...

The Djokovic fans on this board are so bad that it almost makes Djokovic's poor form worth it. Just to see their bipolar mood shifts go from.. "He is horrible.." to... "He's back! Djokovic 2.0 rebooted! Watch out for the next winner of Roland Garros! He's peaking perfectly!"... to..."Ugh... he is horrible"...

Seeing Djokovic fanboys go into bipolar fits is truly one of the most enjoyable things on TTW.

Zev is a Russian from Germany? but his English is better than most of my Pennsylvania neighbors!

He is a German (born in Hamburg) of Russian parentage. His parents and elder brother Mischa, also a tennis player, emigrated to Germany before he was born. His father, Alexander Zverev Snr used to play tennis for the Soviet Union and is now coaching his younger son.

He speaks German, Russian and English.

Let's see how Sascha will do at the FO before turning him into a slam contender.
True, but that serve game is going to give him a lot of legs deep into the draw with very efficient matches. Zverev has played every week from Monte Carlo with two tournament wins a near SF in Madrid where Cuevas pulled a rabbit out of the hat. That's a lot of tennis to finish with a title in Rome.

He is young though. He can afford to play a substantial amount of tennis.

I will never like Zverev, but props to him that was a hell of a match. Superior serving and excellent pace and depth in his groundstrokes.

2017 Djokovic is still around. Glimpses of brilliance but without real consistency. Also some lack of confidence, which Zverev exploited by not showing any weakness and a break in the opening game.

Welcome future #1, but he is still an arrogant brat. I'd like to see Rafa against Zverev when Zverev starts to cramp and Nadal looks like after his warmup schedule in the fifth set. :p
Dream on Lord A. Zedbot is going to cruise through draws.

Very good performance by Zverev. Also, very composed and mature on court. Well deserved.
Many good things still to come from him, I believe.

On the other hand, Nole wasn't even a shade of yesterday's performance. On a bright side, we now know that the old super version is somewhere there. Just needs to sustain his level through the tournament.

I'm going to have to see a replay of that but by Djokovic's reaction I thought that it must have been in.

Z didn't protest much neither.
He protested, but luckily did not have a fit. Hawkeye way off. You could see the mark and the serve barely caught live which is why Zverev was debating the read of the mark. They could try to use hawkeye on an ipad of something for the ump so they can make sure they don't go wildly for the wrong mark. Frankly they should have the umpire consult the linesman if their is a dispute to which mark. The ump has to ask as we don't want linespeople getting out of hand to like Cedric the entertainer.

Kyrgios Beat Novak 2 straight times in straights. Not a Mug, but he could just turn out to be a new Monfils. Lots of talent, bad dicipline

In January, you could have said, "Fed has won the AO four times, 7 years ago being his last."

We all know what happened.

That's fine, but at his age, and in this climate, penciling Fed or anyone in as the Wimbledon favorite is silly. Murray looks like the world #75. Djoker has been terrible for most of the past year. Fed is nearly 36, coming off another long layoff. Who knows what will happen.

Congrats to Sascha Zverev on his big breakthrough! First German to win a Masters 1000 title since Haas at 2001 Stuttgart and youngest player to do so since 10 years ago when Djokovic won 2007 Miami at the age of 19 years,10 months. First of the NextGen players to make the big breakthrough and land a big title and do it against one of the most dominant players of the last decade and in straight sets too!:)

Cometh the hour, cometh the Man? Are the pages of history finally turning on the ATP tour? Are the Old Guard finally stumbling? First Coric destroys Murray, then Thiem destroys Nadal, now Zverev destroys Djokovic! Are the Next Genners finally starting to make their mark?? Interesting times lie ahead!!!

Come to me when Kyrgios wins something big. He can beat anyone on his day given his great serve. But this is the case for 3 years now. No big titles. Just few big wins here and there.
I agree. The main problem is his mental discipline. technically He can beat any new Next gen. But is that mercurial personality that is hindering him.

Well, I said they're knocking on the door... Zverev has broken the door! Brought it crashing down. He's found a way through the Big 4 title stranglehold and becomes the first young player born after 1990 to net an important title! No one in the LostGen managed it, and no one in the NextGen category had done it prior to today, so congratulations to him! @Zebrev has been completely vindicated today.

A bit off topic but anyone know when the French Open starts, it says May 22 which is tomorrow but I read somewhere else it starts May 28 so what is going on the week of 22-28?

Congrats Zed, got his 1st master title at 20.
And because of this win, recency bias is currently stronger than ever

Do you think Zverev is arrogant? He was a saint on court today and has been so the whole tournament. Didnt waste energy on personal drama like someone else.

I think it was 2 years ago when he played in Vienna and was arguing with the chair umpire about everything. He was young and unknown back then and acted like he was the real deal. Also the son of a friend of mine was a ball boy and he said that Zverev was very unfriendly. Not only during the game (which I understand since pressure and stuff) but also afterwards. He refused to sign autographs and ignored them pretty much.

He might have changed since then, but when it comes to persons I will never know in person the first impression counts big times.

Edit: I know Novak spends some time on court that makes people dislike him, but I can't change my fan feelings towards him. I like people that are a little edgy on court but nice otherwise.

22 is probably when qualifying starts. Actual tournament is next weekend.

Little edgy  He is 30 years old and grumpy half of the time on court. Snearing at innocent ballboys. He did it today too to a poor kid. Complained about the court, the wind and whatever. His only problem was Zverev!

Looks like Zverev has grown a lot! I have a son that is growing and they go through different phaces, have to think its great to improve to the better, and forget about stuff that wasnt so good. He seems really strong mentally now, maybe because he has a better attitude he can keep his focus better. Really impressive in the mental departement on court I had to watch the match one more time. Novak is a mess compared. Rafa too can be really nervous in big moments even being two sets up sweating like Nigeria Falls when serving the match out.
