Rome courts are a shame

The problem was not how slippery the surface was. On one hand, there were holes on the clay. On the other hand, and this is the most dangerous, the lines wouldn't stay flat, and when players tried to slide on them, they would trip on them, risking injury. This happened in several matches to different players.
Yes, that's the reason Rafa fell during his QF match:

Yes, treacherous nailed lines.
Good that Rafa escaped with just some bruises

Can someone please explain what "painted lines" are on a clay court? The only clay courts Ive played on have the same nailed-down strips.

In old clay courts, or in locations with cheap labor, lines were painted with white lime, using specially designed rolling artifacts.
It was a nuisance because this had to be done every several games.

Im willing to bet that Rome 2022 will have painted lines instead of nailed down ones. Save this thread and we can revisit in 51 weeks.
I think so too haha. King of clay arguing about the clay court will surely wake them up. Also it's not just Nadal who had problems but also Federer I remember in 2019 had complaints about the lines

Lol - how in the world do you maintain that? That Nadal slide would have wrecked that line for the rest of the game. Its hard enough for them to call it correctly if its almost right on the line!

Correct. The medicine would be worse than the illness. Imagine repainting the lines every changeover.
I played on those courts, I found them strange the first times.

It's nice to see how badly he wants it, but I cringed both times he tumbled this week, fearing injury. Not even a fan, but I'd hate to see someone go out like that. Glad it was relatively benign.

We need more Americans to chime in on this thread, with all of their clay court expertise.
duh
4. Wait, how do you paint lines on clay — er, the red surface?
The tournament’s site to the rescue again!

The lines are marked out with thread and scraped to 6cm wide, down to the limestone layer. A thin coat of linseed oil is first applied for better adherence, and then two coats of white paint are applied.

I used to play at a club which had Hartru clay courts. But, I didn’t enjoy them as much as I thought I would as they were very slippery from lack of enough watering and in addition, the lines were tapes that were nailed down with a lot of nails - if a ball was on a line, it invariably took a random bounce after hitting one of the nails. So, while the line tapes were not a hazard, it wreaked havoc on having any rhythm particularly in singles to the extent that I liked because of all the random bounces ending points.

Yesterday's incident and the one in QF was hard to watch. I watched the one in the QF and seriously concerned for Rafa especially since he was down for a minute almost. Yesterday's fall scrapped his skin. Rafa has the right to be pissed. Rome is not only poorly organized. It also maintains poor quality of courts.

Clay is not like that sh1t we saw this week. You don’t know about clay.
More players injure themselves on grass and hard than on clay.
Sorry mate, frogs know best. Nadal being ex-ribbit A means he alone probably skewed the stats for the entire tour lol. Plus wai moar hard courts innit (which should of course be permabanned).
