paolo's shots just dont have the same pop on them that they did the first and second sets ... he seems to be running out of energy/fitness vs. rafa

I kind of expected a performance like this from Rafa. A lot of people assumed that he would be coming out all guns blazing in Rome, and blasting winners from the first point to make a statement.

I kind of guess that wasn't going to happen. That loss in Madrid hurt him, and to me it was evident in this match. He was determined to slay the demons that were growing in his mind about Djoker turning the mental tide in his favor. Losing in straights, to Djoker on clay, did not help at all.

Hopefully for his sake, he can pick himself, and play better in his upcoming matches.

has to be so dissapointing for a player ranked so low to be so close to beating the number and then losing it. My heart breaks and rejoices at the same time
The money he earned and yesterday match should offer him some consolation.Plus he can do a gulbis

That's not unusual nowadays. One chap called Bellucci did that a week back somewhere. I don't think you'd recall that -- you had your head under the pillow at that point - :D :D

Don´t expect a replie on that.. his head is under the pillow again.

Nadal can be very uncertain if he is playing someone he has never played before- even if they are in the 100's I can think of quite a few situations like this

Feli is really getting some love with his flat backhand this clay season. Not taken his chances to break Kohli, though.

Babs, ya found these tweets

Rafa is talking now with national tv. Hard game, he says that he played bad and he thought that in second set he could go home...
spanishtv asks about why is not trying to play inside the court. He asks that he needs time, he doesn't feel good after Madrid
he feels tired, no injury

:( I think he will also go out in the next 2-3 rounds.

Nadal should probably go home and rest before the French Open, but I doubt he will. It was ridiculous of the organisers to put Madrid and Rome in consecutive weeks.

Wow - what just happened to Melzer?

First, conceded the first set by overruling an 'out' call on Mayer's set point serve (great sportsmanship). Next, he's 40-30 up in the first game of the second and he casually strolls back to his seat to retire, having had no medical time out or significant sign of injury.

Yeah, Rafa looked tired all throughout and its good that he confirmed this instead of trying to shrug it off.

Still, one has to consider if this is the best move for him. If he is tired, why not go out to this qualifier? Would the shame be too great?

I mean its clear Nadal needs to rest so why not take the chance.

Yodalito would you be so humble to explain Dr.Fedace, Stanford graduent, the whole situation.

I can try, but his hate towards the King will prevent him from understanding my logic. :(

We all know how mentally weak Djokovic was back in the old days when he was breaking rackets during crucial moments, doublefaulting on matchpoints/breakpoints, cursing and a lot more, in other words Djokovic couldn't handle the pressure.

During an interview they asked him about his breathing problems. Djokovic said that his breathing problems mostly occured when he was under huge pressure, again he's saying that he can't handle the heat. Djokovic was lacking self belief. Self belief leads to insecurity and a mentally weak minded state.

Let's not forget about the AO where Djokovic had a stomach disease... so he was facing alot of problems at the same time, both mentally and physically.

Serbian news was full Djokovic's personal problems with his family etc... wich caused more pressure than needed.

The King solved all his problems and is not the same player anymore. He solved all his family issues, won his Davis Cup match against France wich gave him a huge boost, and ofcourse let's not forget about his 5-setter match against Federer. Djokovic trasnformed into a confident King with no problems in the back of his head (Personal problems). Combined with his gluten-free diet, the King can perform at his very best. Confident King knows how to handle under huge pressure, wich helps him calm down and prevent him from having any breathing problems.

Is Rafa using the Cortex Crystals in Rome?

I understand that the Cortex is giving him more control and greater depth of shots this year.

Thanks for any insightful dialogue. Maybe we can be friends if you give answers to the Cortex queries.
