Rune reminds me a bit of Zverev, when it comes to that passive play. He can play great but when he gets tight, his performance isn‘t strong enough to beat tough opponents. But they also share that they play more freely against someone like Djokovic.

Btw, congrats to Daniil for another great tournament! Hope he plays Alcaraz at RG - to see if he can also improve on playing probably one of his worst matchups.

That's the biggest thing for me - that all his tourney wins are unique; he's never repeated. You rarely see a player winning 20 tournaments and doing that.

What's the shame in losing to a former world #1, US Open Champion, and multi Masters champion like Medvedev?
Did people really think Medvedev couldn't figure out clay?

Great win for Medvedev of course. From the bits I watched, it seemed that Rune leaned into that passive side of his game too much, just rallying back and forth without trying to do much. He did the same thing when he lost to Rublev and doing it against a certified defensive master like Med won’t do you any good. He needs to stay away from that bad habit if he wants to continue improving.

But I really had a hard time imagining Medvedev winning a clay masters, when facing Zverev, Tsitsipas and Rune.
Mostly because of Daniil‘s serve being a lot less effective and then his relatively flat groundies.
But kudos for the win. Although still I think he would have had a hard time beating Rune, if Holger could deliver his best tennis.
Rome 2023 had the last laugh, it seems, turning anticipated outcomes on their heads. First Alcaraz, the new world number 1 was sent home by the spectacular Marozsan, ranked outside the top 100. Then, one of rising next gen stars and home favourite- Sinner, was shown the door by the superb Cerundolo. As if to prove that it was not just these bright young things that got a spanking, Djokovic, one of the greatest players to ever play the sport, was humbled by the sizzling Rune.
With the established clay court credentials of Ruud and Tsitsipas who reached the SF's, it seemed that one of these 2 would lift the trophy, but no. Rome had other ideas.
Bravo, Medvedev, for lifting the trophy in what was a relatively routine straight sets win over Rune, having similarly made short work of Tsitsipas in the SF. A ‘non-clay specialist’ is the last man standing in an excellent field. He is also the new world number 2. I bet he loves clay now! My respect for his steady, grounded approach and work ethic grows. Having won 5 titles this year, he seems to be enjoying his tennis, making him a sound contender for yet more titles.
Rune could not overcome the final hurdle after his fabulous win over Djokovic, and excellent resurrection in the SF against Ruud. He should nevertheless be proud of his run in Rome, and remain focused on converting his chances into titles. As he will no doubt be aware, 'almost' isn’t good enough.
Onwards to Roland Garros.

That would be wild. Something like 40 titles - all unique. Rune reminds me a bit of teenage Djokovic, albeit a more rambunctious one. His passive playing intermixed with explosive bursts where he reels of 3-4 games in a row, the MTOs and the constant debate about whether he is just anxious (constant heavy breathing) or physically hobbled.
Hopefully his career arc over the next few years will be similar to young Novak as well. I do believe he is a more gifted player than the likes of FAA, Shapovalov and Sinner.

It was always mental for Med on clay. It helps that he's got this new spinny FH, but it's this attitude change that's seen him lift the Rome Masters cup.

When you think of players that do love clay, but have never won a Masters title on it- his win seems the more remarkable.

Finally upon this tournament and finals match, I thought the presentation ceremony was a tad shoddy for a Masters event. They might-for example- have taken a leaf out of David Ferrer et al's book, who put up a superb presentation event at Barcelona this year.
