It was time long ago. I honestly don't understand why he keeps putting himself through this. He's a young man - there are other things out there for him.
He just really loves the sport I guess. Who wouldn't want to keep playing in his position and everything he has accomplished and continues to accomplish? It's probably why it's so difficult for him to give up.

90% of the forum believe 2021 was the best ever Nadal.

Well, this was unexpected...
I don't like what I'm hearing about Nadal's foot, doesn't look good ahead of RG.
He still has a few days to try to rest up and get it all together, but if he does play I fear he could lose for only the 4th time there

One thing that needs to be given credit is how solid Shapo was despite what was happening on the other side. It’s easy to be distracted and have a lapse in concentration. Shapo was in a similar situation in AO and allowed himself to get distracted and lost the plot completely in the final set against Nadal. He has learned from it.

Classic TTW overreaction. Something tells me that, at RG, the foot will be feeling much better.
I highly doubt it, though it would be nice as a fan of the goats. Its the worst clay season Nadal has had since 04. Though if anyone is capable of doing it, it's the king of clay.

Nadal will be fine. Let's not overreact.

At this stage, Shapo should beat Rafa every time out. The fact that Rafa is still the better player should give his fans a lot of comfort.

Shap has beat Nadal before and went to a third set tiebreak at Rome last year. Doesn’t look like either of those matches ended Nadal. Don’t know why this one should be different.
Because I saw the other matches you mentioned, and found this last one very different. Nadal lost 14 points in a row before the last three or four of the match. Never saw him so limited physically, and with that look on his face.

Lol. He really wasn't solid at all to be honest. Never looked great and just rallied a bit in the third set against a Nadal who had nothing

Watching the Tennis Channel coverage. They are talking about the match and not a word about Shapo. Not a word.

Anchor just said "We don't want to take anything away from Denis Shapovalov, but let's look at Rafa's press conference"

And now it's the Novak match.

They didn't talk about Shapo at all or show any of his remarks. Outrageous. I don't see how anyone can defend this.

Who cares about Shapovalov? He was ball bashing, not well, and only advanced because Rafa couldn't move. No need to pretend otherwise to coddle his feelings.

He won the match.

And yet literally all of the coverage was given to the losing player.

No other player gets this treatment, because no other player does what Rafa does. He can't stand the spotlight being on anyone else, and the media are happy to oblige.

Rafa losing in Rome is a story, Shapovalov winning in Rome is not a story. Did Stakhovsky get a lot of attention after he beat Fed at Wimbledon? You're being very obtuse. People care about Rafa, not the guy who happened to be across the net and benefit from the situation.

I dunno, there seemed to be more Shapo fans in the Rome crowd than Nadal fans

Stak got more attention than Shapo. And that's partly because Federer didn't drag himself around the court like a cripple once he realized he wasn't going to win, because he can't stand not being the story.

Also, Stak wasn't a top player. Shapo has been top 10-15 for years now. To literally ignore him is a journalistic failure, but hey nobody is more important than Rafa so the rest of the tour has to just suck it up.

I'll just refer back to my earlier reply to a post of yours about the human mind being remarkable 8-B

Good on Shapovalov to get the job done. Nadal is looking bad, though. He should just rest up, heal, and get ready for the Australian Open. I'm not sure why he always has to continue to punish himself into prolonged injury. If he's going to take six months off, he may as well start now. Why wait for things to get worse?

You should send a harshly worded email. Do you want Steve Weissman’s email address?

I missed the match but looking at the highlights I'm not really understanding why he didn't just retire if it was that bad.
