This time I really don't see a thread for WTA tournament in Rome.

Couple of interesting results today.

ElVez beat Radwanska again, Petkorazzy lost to qualifier Hercog, Bartoli lost to Medina Garrigues, JJ got her revenge vs Safarova, Peer beat Kleybanova:

[5] J Jankovic (SRB) d L Safarova (CZE) 60 63
[4] N Li (CHN) d L Dominguez Lino (ESP) 64 62
[6] S Stosur (AUS) d I Benesova (CZE) 61 75
E Vesnina (RUS) d [8] A Radwanska (POL) 36 62 61
[Q] A Medina Garrigues (ESP) d [9] M Bartoli (FRA) 64 63
[10] S Peer (ISR) d A Kleybanova (RUS) 63 75
[Q] P Hercog (SLO) d [12] A Petkovic (GER) 64 62
[16] A Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) d V Dushevina (RUS) 75 64
D Hantuchova (SVK) d [WC] R Oprandi (ITA) 75 61
G Arn (HUN) d [WC] A Brianti (ITA) 64 64

Remaining matches today:

[3] V Azarenka (BLR) vs S Errani (ITA)
Y Wickmayer (BEL) vs [13] A Ivanovic (SRB)
[1] C Wozniacki (DEN) vs [Q] A Rodionova (AUS)
B Mattek-Sands (USA) vs J Gajdosova (AUS)

Well Ana pulled her usual self and lost after winning first set comfortably.

Wickmayer won 26 76 73.

Wicky really stepped up her play after Dad came down to calm her down at 2-5 in the first set.

I didn't see Petko - another early round loss to a low ranked player. Disappointing.

French Open is going to be fascinating - nobody is really dominating right now.

Ana is a total joke.
I mean she has an Awesome FH, a solid BH, had a great serve until her ball toss went to hell.
She is such a mental midget that´s really sad man, she has a total wrong attitude.
For god´s sake she should finally find a coach with whom she´ll stay more than 6 months.

Ana is stubborn and delusional. She thinks she doesn't need a coach, thinks she's on the verge of getting back to the top, and probably thinks her ball tossing is just fine.

She has a more complete game than Sharapova. Yet, she lacks brains when she plays. She can look great one set and then go down the drain just as fast. I'm no fan of hers, but I take no pleasure in seeing her stagnate like this. This choking is getting out of hand.

I think Justine Henin is to blame for alot of the current bad state of the WTA. Henin retired when the game had nobody set to really take over, other than Serena who doesnt play often enough to be ranked #1. So it left a whole array of women who werent ready mentally, emotionally, or even tennis wise to handle the responsible and pressue of being #1 in the World yet, which is a whole other thing that just trying to win a slam. Alot of those women- Safina and Ivanovic especialy, self destructed as a result, and havent gotten it back together since, where as if they had been able to rise at a the comfortable pace and not prematurely have that pressure they might be alot better off. Henin got her own punishment though with her unfulfilling comeback which tarnished her reputation as a player somewhat. I think the tennis gods intervened.

Hantuchova-Schiavone was a high quality affair with lots of drama. One of the best matches this tournament so far!

(Biggest crowd to watch a WTA-match since the AO)

Serena´s 12 events a year were more than enough to dominate the WTA tour for 2 years.. Man there is no real competition there, everybody can win a major title there at the moment. The WTA is full of jokes, chokers, head cases, journeywomen etc... It´s really embarassing.

Schiavone always seems to be involved in such matches.
It must have been a treat for Italians.

In other matches JJ, Arn (who????), Li and Stosur also made it to the QF.

Unfortunately, Azarenka will whipe the dirt off the court with her..

I wouldn't be so sure... Vika's game sucks against anykind of player able to hit harder than her and end points quickly... watch Madrid final for example.

Petra and Maria have a similar game... and if Pova keeps hitting like today... Vika is in for a very long day/night.

BTW Maria 0 DFs... last time she did that was in 2008 if I'm right. lmao.

Wicky vs. Wozzy on now and I'm kinda looking forward to it.

Theoretically, Wicky has the Goerges-like game to be able to defeat Woz, but Woz leads the H2H 2-0, including once on clay earlier this year.

Always hard to bet against Woz and her competitive spirit.

Very difficult to measure Maria's readiness from the Peer match because that is an awful matchup for Shahar. Merely an appetizer for Masha.

H2H 2-2 Azarenka won last two meetings Stanford final 2010: straight sets ; Miami final: straight sets.

Azarenka doesnt have that much problems with girls who hit harder than her, Kvitova was just better that day, serve way better.
Also Azarenka is totally on fire Miami.
And lets not forget this is on clay, Maria would have higher chances on HC. imo

Woz-Wicky somewhat predictable. Caro's strategy: drive Wicky nuts with the consistency. So far, mission accomplished.

Yanina is arguably the most brainless ball basher in the top 30. And that says something when Kuznetsova, Pavlyuchenkova, Hantuchova, Kvitova, Li, Rezai, Petrova, Stosur, Sharapova were all options to choose from.

I'm sorry but no. As an example, this match:
Woz: 5/8 net points
Wick: 18/24 net points

Sharapova remains the most brainless ballbasher IMO.

She is not top 30 yet, but the most mindless ballbasher is Jovanovski. By far.

Anyway, Miss Sunshine beat Yanina 61 76.

Vika beats Pavly 64 46 62

QFs
(1) Wozniacki - (5) Jankovic
(2) Schiavone - (6) Stosur
(3) Azarenka - (7) Sharapova
(4) Li - Arn

Surprisingly few upsets this tournament. Radwanska's the only QF seed who didn't make it.

Yes... the hitting hard is over the par... in fact I was just thinking of players that play much quicker than her.

You're right for the clay but Vika has a nasty habit to play % (down the middle) especially when she feels the pressure... she doesn't move the ball around as good as she'd do against an Errani... I felt that in Madrid.

If Pova isn't in UE mode that isn't going to work...

Yes. I don't read much in that match too... only for the 0 DFs... Maria hasn't really sustained a good level for long...

Though to me it's the 1st. time this year in Rome she played back to back clean matches... the let down might come against Vika.

I just thought that Maria's serves looked better than in... well... years. But what do I know! (Not much actually.)

Jankovic is being such a drama queen in set 3. She claims she asked the ump to sweep the court after the 2nd set. Ump claimed she was willing to do that if JJ asked. So after JJ got broken, there was some drama and the other side of the court got swept.

Five straight games won by the returner. JJ, if you could stop being an on-off UE machine this match is yours to take.

After a long game, make that 6 straight games won by the returner.

LOL Woz was up 40-love.. now facing a BP.
Back to deuce. JJ insisted on having the ump check the mark. That ump is such a lazy fattie.

7 straight games broken.

3-3 JJ to serve.

4-3 Woz. EIGHT straight breaks of serve.

Wozniacki - Jankovic was such a disaster, like watching {very dirty} paint dry. I don't like to beat on the WTA but this was a horrible match.

Caro's into the semifinals ... she'll play the winner of the "Battle of the Hooters"
(no not the ones youre thinking of) ... this one: Azarenka v Sharapova!

this battle of the hooters (Vika and Masha seem to be imitating each other, although Masha started out hooting and now she's beginning to get more to her usual shriek) is actually making laff instead of cringe

24 minutes ... 3 games and 3 breaks of serve: 2 for vika; 1 for Masha

doesn't look as if soderling/djokovic w/b getting on court any time soon.

Aza holds 3-1

Sometimes it does sound as if they are laughing! :D

can't wait to see these two play at Roland Garros, where the crowd will be imitating both of them!

===

set point for vika ... and she takes it in 56 minutes

ooops I could swear I just saw Vika's lips saying "F-ing Beotch" as she clenched her fist after that win .... she's the more jock of the two, maria more girly ;)

Wow, didn't expect this:

[6] S Stosur d [2] F Schiavone 62 64

Schiavone has suddenly totally lost her form so doesnt surprise me. IMO she is easily a more talented player than the overhyped Stosur and the FO final result was the correct one, but she doesnt seem to have it together now.

Is that 3 straight losses for Jankovic to the Woz now?
