Roof makes Wimbledon a lottery: Fed

888510-roger-federer.jpg

ROGER Federer believes the roof on Wimbledon's famed Centre Court has made a lottery out of the pursuit of the championship title.

The great Swiss, chasing Pete Sampras's record of seven titles, survived an epic battle to defeat France's Julien Benneteau on Friday to reach the last 16.

But he had been just two points from defeat in the fourth set before clinching a 4-6 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 win and avoid slumping to his earliest defeat at the All England Club in 10 years.

Federer's struggle was played out under the roof, as was the final set of Rafael Nadal's historic loss to Czech world No.100 Lukas Rosol in the second round 24 hours earlier.

Even defending champion and top seed Novak Djokovic struggled in the hothouse conditions, dropping the first set to veteran Czech Radek Stepanek before reaching the last 16 in four sets.

"It does play different indoors. Obviously that's a bit of getting used to. Indoor grass not something we're quite familiar with," said Federer after pulling off his eight career recovery from two sets to love down.

"You just don't have the elements. You just don't have the sun setting, which can be tricky at times. From the one end it's easier; from the other end it's tough. You have the wind swirling. When I was warming up I was thinking that's going to be a big factor for the players out on Centre Court if they're going to leave the roof open or not.

"Don't know if it would've favoured me or not even more so, but it changes everything. So then does it play slower indoors? I would think so, a little bit, right?

"But then at the same time, you can really play yourself into a trance-like state like I thought Rosol was in in the end of the fifth. That's harder to do outdoors with the elements."

Federer believes that the unique conditions served up under the roof can cause more shocks in the sport and keep the top three players in the world on their toes.

"This is not against Rafa, but it was nice to see it's still possible," said Federer.

"I think 15 years ago you had matches like this so much more often on the faster surfaces, that a guy could catch fire and just run through you.

"Today it's virtually impossible because you make so many more returns and conditions are so much slower with the elements.

"In the fifth set it was just a joke. I was laughing because of his performance for 10 minutes after that. I couldn't believe that he pulled it off the way he did."

Federer's next date is against unseeded Belgian Xavier Malisse for a place in the quarter-finals.

Malisse pushed Federer to five sets in the second round in 2001.

"Indoor grass not something we're quite familiar with" says Fed......like outdoor grass is really any different? They have like what - two weeks to prepare....blah blah blah. Is not Hamburg indoor grass? more blah blah blah excuses - Benneteau played a great match and could (maybe should have) have taken your but - shut up and play on.

i think he does have a point in that there probably is a notable difference, although i agree that the players should just play under the circumstances presented to them, something that both benneteau and rosol did better than their opponents for most of the match.

indoor grass has only been present since 2009 in only one stadium of a single tournament on tour, and most times the stadium remains outdoor. hamburg is outdoor clay with a retractable roof. so i don't think indoor grass is the norm for most players. the difference between indoor and outdoor grass is probably similar to how Rod laver arena plays with/without the roof, perhaps even more so since grass is more susceptible to change in temperature/humidity than hardcourt.

Sorry to digress, but does anyone know why the officials left the roof on when it wasn't actually raining?

Angry young man? Lighten up, dude... you'll live longer. Roger has made some valid points. Yes, JB did play an excellent match for the better part of 4 sets. This does not invalidate the points that Roger was making with his assessment.

When is the last time you played on Wimbledon Center Court with/without roof? So maybe you shut up and play on? Federer did not say it was an excuse, he just said it is a change and needs getting used to... And he did!

Lol Fed laughing because Rosol played lights out tennis and took Rafa out.

What a loser this guy is how he has fans is beyond me. Laughing because he knows he can't beat Rafa himself. Laughing because now he thinks he'll have a chance at winning. Wait till he has to play the Joker man and reality hits in again, I wonder if he'll laugh then.

Roger usually beats Rafa indoors, and the last time that they played where the elements were brutal was at Indian Wells where Roger fairly thumped him.

Yeah, Federer should just shut up and let the TW ex-perts do all the talking.

What does he even know about tennis, that lucky weak-field transitional champion between Sampras and Rosol !

They really shouldn't just be leaving the roof on, on the off-chance that there will be rain. This in an outdoor tournament, and how unfair to have one set of conditions on centre and a different one elsewhere. This could hinder either those who haven't played under the roof when they end up having to, OR those who have played under it too much and aren't used to playing in the elements (the smallest lack of practice in the conditions can make a difference come the match), but either way it should be the natural variation of the weather that makes the difference, not tournament organisers with one eye on the ratings, and the roof should be used in emergencies to get matches finished, not as status quo. This is meant to be an outdoor tournament, and yesterday for a few it was not, while sunshine reigned outside. Absurd.

Federer is absolutely right of course, players must get used to it and play on.

Now you may think Fed's an arrogant jerk or something, that's fine (we all have our opinions) but a loser he simply isn't, the guy is an all time tennis great, a man who achieved amazing success in his profession of choice.

As to why he has fans, well I can't speak for others but as far as I'm concerned I have a been a fan of his for a long time for the simple reason that I enjoy watching his game more so than anyone else's (the majority of the time anyway), what he says in interviews/does in his private life is of no concern to me.

At the other big events the top guys have the advantage that they can train and get used to the different situations on the center court.
Here no player is allowed to train on the center court and most of the guys out there have never played under the roof so obviously the unfamiliarity to these situation makes the playing field more even.

I don't know what people are going on about. The only thing Roger said was that it takes a bit of time to get used to it, that's all.
And Federer was laughing at the way ROSOL played. A lot of people were. It was unimaginable. He wasn't laughing AT Nadal.

I can't believe you actually came up with a serious response to that post. Have you been training with the Dalai Lama?

LOL @ the OP and half the posters here who are illiterate rancid twats.

Fed was not complaining but actually celebrating the fact that the roof closure made results less predictable and that the top three (or top whatever) have to be on their toes and what not. He knows that from spectators' standpoint an upset is not necessarily a bad thing. Which is why by the OP's own account, Fed said, quote: "It was nice to see it's still possible".

He's a loser character wise.

"I love playing against Andy... and that's not because I always beat him" - Takes back handed shot at Andy Roddick

"Oh God it's KILLING me" - After losing to Nadal, instead of gracefully accepting defeat he needed the attention to be on him instead of the winner of the major

"I love watching myself play" - AO 2005

"I don't play doubles a lot, but when I do I tend to win a lot" - After winning a doubles match

"He got a little lucky" - After Berdych beat him at Wimbledon

"What is it? like 150000 years" - Taking a shot at English tennis

I respect his game immensly, I don't believe in all this goat crap because it's too difficult to compare different generations of players that played with completely different conditions. But Fed is defintely one of the top tier players of all time, but he's a sore loser and you cannot be called a graceful champion if you're a sore loser.

Have a read, you can see his arrogant nature which is why I'm not going to be gullible like you to think he was joking. No he made it look like he was joking, but really he wanted to rub it in to Andy that he beat him again and he wanted to pile pressure on Murray with that 150000 years comment.

Hey genius I live in Melbourne I saw it live when he made that comment but as I said he made it look like he was joking, his arrogant nature is the give away it was a back handed shot at British tennis. It's not my fault you're too gullible to see this.

Why are you so naive? I don't give a sh*t about Nigel's opinion, it is quite clear that Fed's behavior and his remarks in the past are what makes it obvious that he made it look like he was kidding, but really the mind games were already beginning and he wanted to pile pressure on Murray as well as take a cheap shot at British tennis.

For some reason he thinks Swiss are the best:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QFE3qP2ZS0

Lol at what? Making chocolate and watches???

OH PLS dont tell me you dont take pride in the country your from and say they are the best. Its called being patriotic. But you still havent told me how you discovered this true mentality of Federer. And despite this Prince Charles comes to see him play this year!! and not murray OH WHY IS THAT??? Also so basically hes arrogant because he wears nice clothes during wimby?? That trouser and blazer made him look so classy and elegant and royal which is what wimby stands for. And for the record in wimby 2009 after he beat roddick a ball boy came and he gave him the number 15 jacket. I still dont see whats wrong with that?? He won 15 so why not have it on the jacket?? So either your upset because murray doesnt get to wear classy attire and looks like a turd or that rafa just got out 2 days ago. Your pick.
