Hadn't placed svitolina at 28 years old, thought she was much older around monfils age lol.
The draw looks younger without kvitova and pliskova.

I actually think it's quite an old women's draw in historical perspective. Sure, some of the golden oldies you mentioned (Azarenka, too) are out, but there is a 34-year-old in the round of 16, and more importantly 13 of 16 were aged 25 or older. One of the younger three lost yesterday, on a day when three of four matches were won by the older player (the exception being Sabalenka beating Stephens). But the remaining two under-25 players are likely to win today, and one of them is the tournament favourite, admittedly!

Getting pretty deep into it at 32. Whenever he does lose, we'll also hear how there's "nobody between Zverev/Khachanov/whomever who is the second oldest player and Djokovic. Lost Generations" from the usual suspects. OTOH, Dimitrov could belatedly complete the set of slam QFs were he to win today.

I'm surprised he lost to Sascha in such a lopsided match.

Younger list for the women's semis than for the earlier rounds, as the oldest three quarter-finalists all lost. But the youngest quarter-finalist also lost, so we have only one player younger than 25 and no teens.

Its pretty hilarious. Some years ago people believed 30 was the new 25, now Djokovic is the only one left in top20 older than 30y (Dimitrov is nr 20 at 32y).

Seems like we’re back to the usual state of affairs where average age of a top male player is about 25.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean that this is a strong era… it only means that the last good gen has finally aged out (except for Djok, Mannarino, and a few others). The fact that average age briefly climbed up to 30 was strong evidence of the big dropoff in level from one gen to the next.

The peak in average age of top players a few years ago coincided with the inflection point at the end of the period where the last good gen (the djokodal gen) was still able to exert itself (not just one guy).

There has been some reversion to the mean, but we are by no means back to how things were, nor is there a "usual state of affairs." The average age is much higher (still) than it was in the 1980s or 1990s, even if lower than in the late 2010s. It's always going to fluctuate somewhat.

This seems like the year of the 26ers.

Several of the men have upcoming birthdays - in February, De Minaur turns 25, Borges and Hurkacz turn 27, and Medvedev turns 28. (Hurkacz was born on Medvedev's first birthday).

Then several others have birthdays in the month or so before Roland Garros - Zverev, Alcaraz, Djokovic, and Khachanov.

1997 is the deepest year of men's tennis since probably 87 or 88.
This seems like the year of the 26ers.

With De Minaur and Khachanov losing, no other year has more than one man left, but there are still five 26-year-olds in the draw. Only two through to the quarter-finals so far (Fritz and Rublev), but Zverev and Hurkacz are both in with a good chance and probably favored to win tonight. Borges certainly in with a tough ask.

This seems like the year of the 26ers.

The 26ers/class of 97 is starting to suffer a predictable rout. Borges lost to Meddy in round 4, but half the quarter-finalists were 26: Fritz, Rublev, Zverev, and Hurkacz. The first two are already out, and the latter two go into tonight's matches as underdogs, so there's a good chance that every single losing quarter-finalist will be 26, with two younger and two older victors.

It’s still their year. This is their ceiling.

De Minaur's demolition of Michelsen means that there are no teens left in Roland Garros at the end of round 1. Then again, there are five teens in the top 200 and two of the five turn 20 within the next 15 days (Coleman Wong on 6 June; Arthur Fils on 12 June). Prizmic has fallen to #204. (Van Assche, who recently turned 20, has also dropped out of the top 100).

Still not many prodigies around, even with Alcaraz and Sinner doing so well.

@James P Actually, I think that there are no 20-year-olds left in the draw, either. (All matches are now on court, so there will be no further lucky losers gaining entry). So, I believe that Alcaraz (the #3 seed) is the youngest man in the second round, and that Rune (the #13 seed) is the second-youngest. Is that right?

When I wrote the previous post, at least two 20-year-olds were still in, but since then both Mpetshi Perricard and Medjedovic have lost.
