Incidentally, if any of the 30-somethings win, that will be two years in a row of all Slams being won by a 30-something.
And if any of the 30-somethings or Del Potro or Cilic (both of whom turn 30 later in September) win, then by the end of September, no man younger than 30 will have won a Slam in his career. (Sousa and Millman don't turn 30 until 2019).

To understand better what this means we need to know how many in each age bracket started the tournament.

Good point, and we can't treat one tournament in isolation from all the others. Anyway, that's one reason why I've been tracking this over time in this thread. I don't have the energy to do it for run of the mill events, but I'm trying to do so at every slam.

With Coric out and Thiem turning 25 tomorrow, there will be no man under 25 in the second week of the US Open. And Thiem is the only one under 27.

Stephens is only 25. I did not imagine she is still so young after being around for years.

And it can’t be Coric. Honestly, the all-slam champions are 30 is now very likely to be reality on 28 September (Cilic’s birthday).

And even if it doesn’t happen, Thiem is already guaranteed to start 2019 as the only slam finalist born since the start of 1991.

No, it would be true if winners were selected randomly or in some other organized "fair" fashion. However, winners are selected by tennis skills. That's why Roger, Rafa, and Nole all have a ton of trophies while many of their opponents who played just as long, and perhaps even played in more tournaments, have nothing.

Wow. 10 of 32 age 24 and under. That's pretty good and if you included 25 that would outnumber 26-29 and 30+.:p

If you judge only by results, this has to count as a disappointing tournament for younger players. But they definitely feel on the verge of a breakthrough. So many narrow loses: Khachanov, Shapovalov, De Minaur, Fritz.

Don't know what you mean about the last sentence, though. There were no 25-year-olds in R3 (Thiem is now 25, but only as of today). 28 is the middle of the age range: 14 of 27 and below; 14 of 29 and above; 4 of 28.

Two weeks after the final, every man who has ever won a Slam will be 30 or more. However, if Del Potro wins, he'd be the youngest Slam winner since Murray at Wimbledon 2016, and the first one who is not yet 30 since then.

NextGen getting by on default retirements of older players.

Verdasco, Seppi, Berdych, Agut and Fognini.

All five of those guys made round three, though, and three are still in, two of them through to round 4. Not a bad showing, especially for Berdych, who is returning from injury.

Also, I would put Agut in a different category. Not only is he a year younger than Fognini, and three or more years younger than the others, but he was such a late developer, that he has relatively little mileage for a player who is almost 31. His breakout Slam was only five years ago (AO 2014), and he hadn't done that much at tour level until a year or so before then. By contrast, Berdych won a masters in 2005, and even Verdasco had his golden moment 10 years ago. Time on tour and matches played is a big factor in wear and tear, as well as years lived on the planet!

Almost time for the next Slam, but with more than half of the MS events for 2019 completed, I wanted to note that younger players are still not breaking through at the highest level yet. I thought they would do so more in 2019, but here are the ages of the winners and runner-ups at the six largest events played so far in 2019:

Winners = 31, 25, 37, 31, 31, 32. [N.B. all three winners aged either 31 or 32 have a birthday coming up - Djokovic turns 32 on Wednesday, Fognini turns 32 on Friday, Nadal turns 33 on the second Monday of Roland Garros].
Runners-Up = 32, 37, 33 [now 34], 28, 20, 31.

When Djokovic turns 32 on Wednesday, we'll have another 32+ world #1. I believe that the men who have been #1 aged 32 or more are Agassi, Federer, Nadal, and soon Djokovic.

This does not surprise me at all.
In rec tennis, the older you are, the better you are.
My biggest crushing defeats have come from players older than 60.
They are easily the best 4.0 players around.
Young guy? Either a pusher or a maniac.
Old guy? Does not give away any free points.

I would like to see winner's ages from USTA Nationals at the 3.5 and 4.0 level.
I predict all of them are over 50.
