Round round and "a half"??

Brilliant

Rookie
League folks out there: We are about to start our Fall league. There are 12 teams in our local area. So, the level coordinator gave us a choice...split into two flights geographically and play each other once for 5 matches or have an unflighted group where we play 8 random matches. Well, the vote was we have two flights because the geographic situation is pretty bad being the furthest drive for some of us is 45 min to an hour or could be worse (1.5 hrs if traffic) AND we requested more than 5 matches.

I put out there that for the two flights we have a round robin and a half where the last 3-4 matches are random within the flight. Well, the level coordinator checked with the LLC and she said that it would violate a regulation by doing so. I call BS and so do most or all captains.

Question is this...have you ever come across having a round robin and a half? If so, please send me the link to the local league that shows it. I need some concrete evidence that it's been done. I've seen it before but can't find it.

Appreciate it!!

I’d guess that the LLC has recognised you guys are extremely high maintenance, and just doesn’t want to deal with the inevitable complaints about X team getting a cakewalk at the end of the season

wow ... total BS.
Our 18+ and 40+ seasons are both round robin and 1/2. So if that is against some rule ... wow. And that is an advancing league.

With 2 flights of 6 teams each, why not do a complete double RR? That is a pretty standard 10 matches for a season and would make sense.

Intermountain?

LOL re doing a double round robin...I didn't provide that one minor detail. They a season ending championship which puts each flight winner against each other. The "local" Fall championship started last year as a way for Fall to be "competitive". Sorry to be sarcastic but it's a joke. No one cares about it.

@OnTheLine Please send me the link to your local round robin and half in a DM. Appreciate it!!

In my area, at times we have sub-flights with 6-7 teams and our league coordinator wants to get us more than 5-6 matches, so she'll create a schedule that has a full round-robin but then one or two additional matches against random opponents. Seems like exactly what you asked for, so either there is no rule being violated, or my LC has figured a way that what we do is ok.

Here is earlier reply I got from the Men’s Coordinator:

My interpretation of the Southern regulation below is a partial round robin would be used for a single round robin. I will have our LLreach out for clarification as to whether a partial double round robin can be used in Championship seasons.

2.01C(2) Partial Round Robin. Each NTRP level within a local league may play a partial round robin competition wherein every team plays the same number of matches against randomly selected opponents. A minimum of the top two teams shall progress to a single elimination playoff to establish a local league champion for that NTRP level.

Ummmm the way I see it it (Southern Reg) doesn’t say that a round robin and a half can’t be done?? I think it’s just laziness too.

I agree, I don't see the listed regulation as not allowing round-robin+.

Here is a team in a PNW 18+ flight where there were 8 teams and all teams played the 7 other teams plus one other to play 8 total.

I'm not aware of any special regulation my section has allowing it, so would think the national regulations allow it. Southern could certainly have section/local rules not allowing it for some reason.

FWIW, the rule you quoted is in the National regulations and is listed as a new rule for 2022. A bit more context.

An additional Local League Competition Format option has been approved.

One important note is that it does call for the top two teams in a sub-flight advancing to the local playoff, which my league does, but if your LC wants to just have the sub-flight winners advance, that is perhaps the reason they say it can't be done.

In my district we've done a single flight, round-robin (only gets to about 5-6 matches dep on # teasms), then the top-half finishers play another round against one another, as do the bottom-half finishers. gets a flight-winner pretty easily, and also plenty of matches for all participants.

not sure if that's what youre calling a 'round-round...

I like this idea. Though I'd imagine one difficulty is the top-half / bottom-half round robins can't get scheduled for home/away locations and dates until after the first round-robin is finished.
