Do you guys have any fitness routines when you hit the gym in order to improve your tennis?

I'm planning on going to the gym, but there people focus more on isolated muscle movements and body building, which i've read is not good for tennis...

it would be great if some of you could tell me what routine you guys follow so that I can adopt that as well...my coach wants me to go for strength training...i need your advice on how i should start and what i should do...

i have gone to the gym before, but then i just wanted to get toned...now i want to go to the gym to specifically improve my strength thus improving my game...help me guys...

Good luck with the exercise goals, but with respect to the forums....search, search and search some more!

Threads like yours are started once every week or two, if you search (or even just page through) the health & fitness forums you'll find mega-tons of information related to gym-work for tennis, different goals, etc etc.

Yeah, the board is archived with more info than you could want, but just my 2 cents, if you want compound movements, look toward squats, clean jerk and press, shoulder raises/flies (lateral, front, and rear). I also throw in some boxing with a heavy bag or focus mitts to work on upper body/arm speed/strength/endurance.

I've been following the USTA Player Development program linked in the sticky thread above for a few weeks now. Works great, and all you need is exercise tubing and a medicine ball.

The routine in that link is pretty basic. I would avoid the leg isolation exercises like extension and curl.

The rest of the exercises there are in most muscle building routines.
