Rublev says no to Anna Kalinskaya: “Jannik, not Jannik, I don’t want to get involved. I’m sorry”

A seemingly innocuous question posed to Andrej Rublev on the sidelines of the Madrid tournament, where the Russian tennis player was eliminated in the second round by Aleksandr Bublik, produced a surprising response from the 27-year-old Muscovite. Rublev was told of Anna Kalinskaya's desire to play mixed doubles with him at the US Open next August, to which Andrej not only said no to his compatriot, but brought up - completely unsolicited - Jannik Sinner, who was linked to Anna by a relationship that lasted for several months from the spring of 2024, ending (perhaps) at the end of last year, with the disappearance of mutual social references and no more photos together or anything else that could suggest they were still a couple, except for a response given by Kalinskaya last January about her relationship with Sinner ("for me nothing changes in terms of pressure").
What Anna Kalinskaya Said About Andrei Rublev:

The Request for the Mixed Doubles at the US Open
Last weekend, Anna Kalinskaya, who was also present in Madrid and also eliminated in the second round like Rublev at the hands of Madison Keys, had expressed her desire to play the mixed doubles (which from this year will take place before the actual tournament, a decision that was highly contested by many specialists) at the next US Open together with Andrey Rublev, but she also explained how her compatriot had rejected her proposal: "Actually, I had completely forgotten about this tournament. Today I thought about it and asked Andrey Rublev. I wanted to play with him, but he has already made arrangements and did not expect me to ask him. I only remembered today, I have not received any proposals so far, I do not know if I will play, we will see".

Anna was then asked again: "Who could be your partner, a Russian or a foreigner?". "No, I think that among the Russians I would like to play only with Andrey. Apparently, I will have to look for a foreigner".

Rublev's response brings in Jannik Sinner: "I don't even want to enter"

As for Rublev (gold medalist in mixed doubles at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics with Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova), he had already announced that he would play mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows with Czech Karolina Muchova.

The story continued the next day, when the matter was brought to Rublev's attention, who then involved Sinner. "You signed up for the US Open mixed doubles with Karolina Muchova," he was told. "Yesterday we heard from Anna Kalinskaya that she wanted to play with you, but you had already chosen a partner."

"Honestly, I don't even want to get involved or try to understand, because I already have an agreement with Muchova. I didn't know that Anna wanted or didn't want to play with me. Jannik, not Jannik, I don't want to get involved," Rublev replied. "I only found out after she wanted it. What can I answer? I'm sorry, but I already made a commitment." Words that make one think that the Sinner-Kalinskaya affair is still very much present in the chatter of the circuit.

Are they still talking about tennis lol.
They're speaking in a foreign language making it sound like they both have something else on mind.

Exactly.

Poor Anna evidently seeks out the most complicated stories, first she gets engaged to a psychopath like Kyrgios, and then the opposite extreme, that is, someone like Sinner who is completely obsessed with his profession.
I knew that their story was destined to last a short time, Sinner, like the big three, is looking for a woman who can give him stability without interfering in his profession, that's why Anna wasn't right for him.
Their relationship was too mediatic.
With his previous girlfriend, Sinner had expressly forbidden him to share photos of them together on social media.
Never brought her into his box.

Engaged? What is your source?

Also, your what the big 3 is looking for and or what Sinner is looking for is your projection. You have no idea who they are or what they want.

Source based on what?
That Sinner and Kalinskaya were engaged is known by every stone.
But do you live on Mars?

I would not say no to her

What are you defining as engaged? Dating? Engaged means something entirely different than dating.
If you understand Italian, the person concerned said it here;

During his first press conference at the last Roland Garros, while rumors of their dating were spreading, when asked if they were engaged, Sinner replied;

"Yes, I'm with Anna"

Adding that he doesn't like to talk about his private life in public and that he therefore wanted confidentiality.
Therefore, I'm not making anything up.

OK. So this is a language barrier. Engaged means they were getting married. That is very different than "I am with Anna".

I don't know what it means to be engaged in your area, here in Italy engaged means to have a romantic relationship that Sinner himself confirmed in that press conference.
Saying to be with Anna means to mean that they were engaged, in Italian "fidanzati".

Wow, the end of that relationship would be one reason which might explain her turning back into the pumpkin that she was before she was getting that sweet sweet Sinner lovin’.

Here it means you dropped $20k on a ring and you intend to be married.
Ok I get it, you are a supporter of the ancient tradition in which the engagement with ring attached was a prelude to marriage.
So you should ask Sinner why he considered his relationship with Kalinskaya an engagement, and he like the vast majority of the Italian population (I speak as an Italian because I don't know how traditions work elsewhere) would answer you that the engagement is not strictly related to marriage.

If they are together why don't they play Mixed together? If it is because he does not play Mixed that is indeed a wise decision by the young Sinner; focus on singles and staying at #1 and avoid the drama of Mixed.
The hapless Rublev likewise should do the same if he has any aspirations to be at the top.

Difficult to play with someone after dumping them no?

None of the involded are teenagers. You think teenager years end at 48 or what?

Sinner is a full grown 23 years old man and Rublev is a full gorwn 27 years old man.
Ha! Nobody makes great decisions at 23 and I was not referring to Rubles.

Welcome to Americanistan, where "going out with", "dating", "engaged to" have very nuanced, specific meanings, rules, and connotations. In our "culture", if Jannick did not present Anna with a diamond worth three times his annual income, they were not engaged.

Yeah, it's just lost in translation. All good, but Winner isn't going to just take it at that.

America has got it right. Engaged is not the proper word to use to convey that a couple is merely dating. "Engaged" should be strictly reserved for a couple planning to wed... "Sinner and Anna are engaged" is misleading and absurd.

Italians are free to butcher and misuse the word "engaged" if they wish but how would Italians convey in English that a couple is planning to get married?

Here is Sinner's new flame, Lara Lieto Russian model.
Sinner likes Russian girls.

One contract girlfriend is out, the other is in. This new girl is probably a bit cheaper then Kalinskaya. The funniest thing is that most of PR-girlfriends are usually beards.

Oh . Ok. Good to know we're right. Is 3x annual salary the right amount for the ring?

For the first time, it looks like the Tour has picked up on the TTW's belief that Jannik and Rubles are indistinguishable.

Italians use context to denote what it means. The intent is either way it's a step towards commitment. As opposed to a casual short term, hook up or one night stand.

There's the word betrothed :p

Suprised that the Germanic root was so intertwined with wedding. Wager and German wetten - English to bet - have the same origin. Italian fidanziare contains fede and follows a similar logic. However nowadays fidanzati can be used to describe a stable pair which hasn't actually or literally fidanzato each other.

engage(v.)
early 15c., engagen, "to pledge" (something, as security for payment), from Old French engagier "bind (by promise or oath), pledge; pawn" (12c.), from phrase en gage "under pledge," from en "in" (see en- (1)) + gage "pledge," through Frankish from Proto-Germanic *wadiare "pledge" (see wed*). It shows the common evolution of Germanic -w- to central French -g- (see gu-).

*Middle English wedden, "take a husband or wife, get married," from Old English weddian "to pledge oneself, covenant to do something, vow; betroth, marry," also, of a priest, etc., "unite (a man and woman) in a marriage, conduct the marriage ceremony," from Proto-Germanic *wadanan (source also of Old Norse veðja, Danish vedde "to bet, wager," Old Frisian weddia "to promise," Gothic ga-wadjon "to betroth").
