Rules of Tennis small books/pamphlets?

I yam looking to get my hands on some small rules of tennis books to bring with me to matches. Back when I played golf in tourneys they'd hand 'em out and you could pick them up for free or for a couple of dollars at pro shops.

I'm just talking a small pamphlet that can fit in a bag, not huge books or anything.

Where does one get these for tennis? thx

The USTA Friend at Court handbook is usually free with USTA membership. I think you can request a free hardcopy from your local section as long as your membership is current. Otherwise, I'm sure it can be had for a nominal fee.

There is a free iPhone app called Tennis Rules that has all the rules for USTA, ATP, ITF, Grand Slams and also other sports. The Code is the one you would be using the most.

If you have any device with a PDF reader, just download the Friend on Court from the USTA site. Or print it out in whatever format you want.

It is encouraging that "yams" are getting into the game. Do you have combo leagues with sweet-potatoes?

I would assume the rules would be the same as for humans. Contact the USTA for their publications. Culling through my tennis bookshelf, I've found six different handy, baggable, pamphlets, booklets and even a plastic coated card, that I've accumulated over the milleniae.

One from 2001 titled : "THE ILLUSTRATED INTRODUCTION TO THE RULES OF TENNIS, second editon", is geared to children, beginners and may also be appropriate to yams. There's a phone number inside for the USTA Bookstore, 1.888.832.8291 which may still work or maybe go to some porn site by now.

I've never read any of these of course, since I prefer to fight--(kidding).

So small even the book can be handled with pig's feet..

It's a small thick book about 300 pages, spiral bound.

300 pages?? that's a monster. I'm thinking something more like 30 pages. The ITF rules run 37 pages in PDF format:

The rules of golf pamphlets we used to hand out could fit in a breast pocket. 300 pages would rip the entire front of the shirt off and expose a nipple.

It's definitely not meant for your shirt pocket. It's too wide. It's almost like a size of a small reader. If you flip through the PDF file of Friend at Court, it's a pretty big file.

Because everything is big in America. We have the biggest cars, fattest kids, and now we got to have a long-ass rule book on tennis.

I made my own by printing out the PDF on duplex (double sided paper) with two pages per one side. (it's like a booklet mode in the printer settings)

Because it includes "the code", and a bunch of comments and examples and USTA specific rules on tournaments, leagues, etc....

That's another reason I just printed it, I only really wanted the rules and "the code", dont really need tournament rules most of the time....

that's almost good, but if I have to point out a rule to some dude, I don't want to whip out some mimeographed pages, blowing all over in the wind, to prove my point. I'd like it to be kind of official looking.

Hmm maybe I'll start a business selling these... just the basic tennis rules in a small booklet sold for a couple bucks a pop.

If you get a PDF file as some of us have noted and simply set your printer to print two pages per side, and flip the sheet over to print the next two pages, you'll only need 18 sheets of paper to cover all the pages up to and including "The Code." Some pages included in the those noted above are appendices, which you really don't need, so you can print fewer. What is unofficial? The text is all there. The page numbers. It is identical to the book. It doesn't look like it was "typed in Word." It will print out in landscape format. Staple it a few times on the left side. Maybe not elegant, but simple. In pro matches we now and then have officials spouting rules out of places "sometimes one can wonder." At least you have a doc. Bring a magnifying glass and print 4 pages per side. I've actually done that for other things to be portable, minus the magnifier.

Winky, this is your lucky day, my friend. I have, in my possession, an original, plasticized 9"x4" card, that is the answer to your wishes. On one side it has "ON-COURT RULES" abridged to 10 bullet points, and on the reverse "CODE OF CONDUCT" abridged to six bullet points. This is the rare 4/93 edition from the last millenium, published by the USTA.

It will cover 99.5% of the situations that arise on court and frequently debated on this board. You will be the envy of all your yam and donut friends. Players will come to you from all corners of the tennis universe for your sage timely advice. And, it can be easily held in your hand (if you have a one handed back-hand).

It is beautifully plasticized and published in the colors white and re-sale red. And for you, my friend, I will part with this family heirloom for the pre-auction price of $5000 US. But don't tarry because it will be going to auction at Sotheby's London soon.
