Rules Question about returning serve

I apologize in advance but I’m watching tennis. It’s the older men playing basically a doubles exhibition at the Australian Open. Ivanisevic was the partner of the returner and was standing in his partner’s service box to show Haas where his serve should land. Haas then served and hit Ivanisevic to quickly win the point.

I think we all know that a ball that hits either opponent in the air and isn’t returned is a winning point for the server in doubles no matter where the opponent is standing.

Here are my questions. I tried to find it in the rules online and failed.

Does the returner have to let the serve bounce in? Could the returner just stand at the net and volley it back? Could you show me where it states your answer in the rules?

Thanks. I realize if it doesn’t explicitly state it, it’s implied. I just couldn’t find it. Thinking this would be a major game changer if not already in the rules. I could just never move from the net. The game would be less fun too. Just really curious if it’s in the rules.

One of the things that makes pickleball challenging to me as a tennis player is having to let the serve return bounce. It’s a rule that takes away the advantage of the server and makes the game interesting.
