Rune confident in return to the Top: 'I beat Djokovic in a Masters 1000 final at 19'

Well, Rune won after an incredible sequence of scalps.
For much less than Shapovalov's victory in Dallas, there were rants.

And he beat Djokovic twice in a row if we also consider the challenge in Rome 2023.
And also in the autumn challenges, again in 2023, between Bercy and Turin, he put him in difficulty both times.

Rune is a fearsome player on hard indoor, just as he can be on clay.
On hard outdoor he hasn't shown anything yet, even if at the last Australian Open, all things considered, he was the player who put Sinner in difficulty the most.
If he had converted those break points at the beginning of the third set, for me there was a good chance that it would have been decided in the fifth set.
 
If he matures and attains consistency (two big IFs), he'll make the tour better.
He's not my favorite, personality-wise, but I don't think he has done anything THAT bad in his past...and he's only 21.
 
He might do well, just look at what Zverev achieved. But if he wants do win slams he needs to fix his forehand, something Zverev never did.
 
This makes me wonder if we will ever see either of them in a Masters final again??

More and more convinced that between Rune, Shelton, Draper and Musetti, Draper will have the best career.
The other 3 will always remain players with sporadic exploits, while Draper can become a solid and consistent player.

Only note, I want to understand how Draper's game adapts to clay.
If physical resistance seems to be his Achilles heel at the moment, then on clay I see him in much more difficulty.
While at Wimbledon this year he could already cause problems for anyone.

they weren’t anywhere near a head case like rune… im sorry but like I said I can only think of agassi … those players you mentioned, nobody ever said they were underperforming in their early years like rune. how many coaches did rune have just last year?!?
and u want to compare him to Federer,?!?
you do know that rune has a reputation for being a ***** right?

Roger federer was not immature at 21 as far as I know.. his return and backhand sucked and was not ready for the grind

Rune return also sucks today but he will not improve it much..

This is just getting ludicrous now, mostly on Big Ted's part.

I'm not saying that Rune has Fed-level talent, and I'm not arguing that Fed was the jerk that Rune has been several times on tour so far. All I said and implied is that if Rune matures and finds consistency, he will make the tour better -- another contender for big tourneys. Almost a nothing-burger statement, and not even guaranteeing that this will happen. Simply, I'm not writing him off at age 21. In the short piece, Rune, himself, talked about the need to find consistency in his game.

And to quote you, if Fed wasn't ready for the grind at say, ages 20 and 21, that implies that he absolutely matured. And that he, obviously, found more consistency in his game. He had immense talent at age 21. He won his first slam (Wim03) just before his 22nd birthday. It took a little while for him to manage his game, his and others' expectations, his preparation, his temperament, his strategy, etc.
 
He has stagnated, and the competition around him has gotten better. His FH is still bad like i've been saying for years. He plays the same way like he did 3 years ago, just relying on his athleticism and great BH, but other than that, he doesn't have the game to win him matches consistently.

he could've been Danish Alcaraz, but instead he's the hard court version of Ruud right now. Alca has way more passion for the game and his mom has nothing to do with his coaching... He needs a father figure in a coach (like Ivanisevic) to show him some tough love and fire him up, imho. That, and a good psychologist to rid him of his toxic codependency with his mom.
