Rune is just another Hewitt
LOL. Hewitt was very mentally strong at even age 16, and I mean elite strong. Hewitt loved competing in tennis matches, loved the scrap. Other players of his generation took longer to get the mental aspect right, especially Federer.

Maybe fed
Fed was a great returner in 2003. He improved his baseline game and strategy, and he definitely improved his backhand, but I don’t think his actual return stroke improved much.

Then again, idk if Rune struggles with the actual stroke either

Rafter, wawrinka, cilic, gomez, and a few others improved as 'veterans'... but i dont know about rune having that one outstanding shot. He is like a slightly better rublev but i just dont know about really taking the match out of opponents hands. He has played some strong stuff in bo3. But against alcaraz he looks very limited.
I would like a jump up in his level but mainly it seems it is all big talk or listless half baked appearances for some time.

Becker may not be the same help post prison sentence either.

interesting. can anyone think of a player who has become a markedly better returner over the course of their career? does seem to be just one of those things you can do, or...can't. i'm having a think on it...

Wawrinka is the one that comes to mind on the return, but someone would have to check the numbers.

I love the overall package but when i watch him the groundstrokes just don't have enough venom to really hurt his opponent. Same thing with the serve. Solid but not elite

Rune has always admitted that the victory at Bercy 2022 proved counterproductive in the long run for his development.
In general, he had the honesty to say that even the best ranking of number 4 achieved after Wimbledon 2023 did not reflect his true value at the time, but was more the result of various astral conjunctions.

In summary, all those results have generated a load of expectations decidedly disproportionate to the actual value of the moment.

Having said that, it is also unfair to limit to Bercy 2022 the good things done so far.
During the 2023 clay season, let's remember that he was able to reach two finals in the masters 1000 in Monte Carlo and Rome.
Even at the 2023 ATP Finals, all things considered, in the round robin he had two matches practically on par with the future finalists of the tournament Djokovic and Sinner.

He absolutely must discipline himself tactically.
And above all he must understand once and for all what type of approach he wants to undertake when he grows up.
I see a version of Rune that is too Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde, that is, a player who alternates moments in which he shows off a hyper-aggressive type of tennis, with others in which he becomes a very passive player.

I think he can win 3 slams.
lol. he is the most overrated player of all time even above Tsitsipas. He has no game at all because his movement is woeful and at that elite level movement nowadays is everything. will be unheard of within 4 years like that Korean who beat Novak once at the AO
