Running for Head Student!

Hey guys,

I don't post much in these forums, because I'm generally more interested in dicussions about the tennis tour.

But now, I need some help, so hopefully you guys can give me some tips. Our school is going to hold elections for head student in a few weeks, and I've decided to try and run. I'm not the type of person who everybody knows, but I still do know a fair number of people.

Our campaign consists of a two speeches, one for juniors, one for seniors, and also going to people's form classes to persuade them to vote for us. We also have to stick posters up around the school (well you don't have to, but everyone does it). That's the most basic stuff, and you can do extra if you want e.g. give out cards/shake hands at the front door every morning, but very few people do that, and I'm not planning to either.

So, with that in mind, do any of you have any tips which could help me in succeeding?

Thanks!

You have not indicated here WHY you're running, so I don't imagine other students would know either. Presumably for your own aggrandizement, or for your "record?" Try something novel like omelet stations and Starbucks coffee in the cafeteria when people arrive in the morning.

Hi, good point. I didn't say why I'm running :p.

Well to be frank, I'd be lying if I said this wasn't for my resume. Everyone does things for their resume, so I'm not going to avoid admitting that. But, I'm also running because I think it's quite a fun thing to do, and that's it's kind of a once in a lifetime experience seeing as I know I don't want to be a politician when I grow up. I like leading people, and to be honest, I do really want to improve the school, pretty much because some aspects of it are really poor such as slow computers, broken equipment.

I actually don't think omelet stations/starbucks is a particularly good idea, because some people have tried that before and it never gets votes in my school for some reason. Thanks for the idea though :)

"Slow computers, broken equipment"?? Who's going to pay for this in the midst of such a wretched economy? "Fun thing to do"? I'm voting for the other guy.

Promise everyone a great future and ask them for money. You will be set for the political scene. If you can also insult other candidates and spread false rumors about them, it is even better.

Haha no you misinterpret me. When I say I'm running because it's quite fun, I'm not saying that's what I'll tell other people and say "oh look you should vote for me because I think this is funny".

I'm actually from Hong Kong, and our economy is doing fine. Our school is also planning on updating equipment, so making sure this is pushed through, which is something head students should do, is definitely feasible.

Assuming that things haven't changed much over the years, my guess would be that the majority of folks who win these things do so for the same reason that professional politicians win: name recognition. The "populars" dominate these things usually. You need to get your name out there. My suggestion: a combo of humor (usually is short supply), "outsider" status and one issue the resonates.

Mmm I agree with you. I'll take your ideas into consideration. Thanks!

A friend of mine went for something like that at university. He knows a girl who photoshopped him into lots of different pictures with Obama, which he then used for posters.

I doubt he's going to win but they were pretty funny.
