LONDON (AP) — Russian tennis player Daniil Savelev has accepted a two-year suspension for doping, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said Friday.

The ITIA said that Savelev tested positive for the prohibited substance meldonium in July 2024. He has been provisionally suspended since August of this year. That means his suspension will end in August 2026.

Savelev had reached a career-high world doubles ranking of 1,486 in August 2022.

The ITIA said that it believed that Savelev had not intentionally taken the banned substance, saying that "Savelev admitted to ingesting meldonium tablets, confusing family medication for supplements of a similar appearance."

The doping watchdog said that Savelev agreed to accept the suspension since he did "not take any steps to mitigate" the rules violation.

Are tennis players that stupid?

Errani fell into an analogous vat of anti-cancer medication and got off with ten months even though we know Meldonium is a placebo.

There's one law for the rich and another for the Russians!
They are all accidentally falling into vats of drugs. And then some are deemed accidents, or maybe semi accidents. Dont worry WADA gots it all figured out.

I’m actually surprised that Meldonium is still on the list, because they subsequently discovered it was totally useless. Maybe just to avoid being sued by Sharapova and numerous other athletes.
That would be a grimly ironic commentary on the state of anti-doping enforcement today. "You are being suspended because we have to try to justify past suspensions, even though none of you poor sods actually gained anything from this pseudo-PED." Gives new meaning to the question of malum in se vs. malum prohibitum.

They always knew it was useless, but they discovered "East European" athletes used it so it was useful for the campaign to rub Russia out of the Olympics.

I'm still pissed about this.
Kept a good player and beautiful woman off the court. She handled her ban extremely well.

Boo-hoo. If certain nations do not want their sports programs to be pegged as a pack of doped-up criminals constantly cheating, then...stop being that pack of doped-up criminals constantly cheating, instead of claiming innocence with about as much ability to be believed as a serial killer still holding the bloody knife.
If it is just a placebo as one poster keeps claiming, why is this tennis player risking a long ban by taking it?
Exactly. Meldonium was specifically engineered to enhance performance (the lengthy evidence posted years ago on this board); the ever-corrupt Russians were always well aware of it, and it was liberally used amongst many of its athletes, including the equally corrupt Sharapova. Logically, if the PED Meldonium was the placebo lie constantly pushed by a pro-Russian propagandist on Talk Tennis Warehouse, certainly Daniil Savelev would have known said placebo lie and taken something else. He did not, because it appears he understood which PEDs would help him, just as the corrupt Sharapova did.

"Me thought it was family medication" Sure, Daniil, sure.

WADA doesn't do research. It does politics. At the top of its Board of Management, there is a representative of the American government and other allied nations. They do as they are told.

But according to our local Soviet bootlicker it is just a harmless sugar pill!
To the Talk Tennis Warehouse pro-Russian propagandists, its only a sugar pill once the corrupt users are caught. Before that time, its a regular drug of the world's most notorious sports program. Daniil Savelev knew what he was doing.

The Rodchenkov-led doping ring was indeed a scandal involving sample swapping and lab chicanery, but Meldonium was a harmless pick-me-up of no performance-enhancing value.

I guess this is why they are dragging their feet with the thresholds. Having to state to the public, that they have wrongly prosecuted lots of athletes for contaminations which have nothing to do with original mission to protect them and the sport must be quite embarrassing…

Love some of those institutions. Demanding exceedingly high standards from young athletes, while being incapable over many years to adjust their rules to the new test realities.

Meldonium can reduce the production of lactic acid during exercise, which reduces fatigue and also improves recovery rates after exercise. According to the drug's inventor, Ivars Kalvins, the drug was used by Soviet soldiers when fighting in Afghanistan in the 1980s to improve their stamina.

In performance athletes, meldonium is now considered a doping agent due to its capacity to decrease lactate production during and after exercise, its capability to enhance the storage and utilization of glycogen, and its protective action against oxidative stress.

The clue here is Afghanistan. The Americans ran a psyops news campaign suggesting that the Russian army was doped up in Afghanistan. It was obviously false.

So you are quoting the maker of the drug and the CIA. Not the two most objective sources of data. And using bold does not make statements true.

Rodchenkov was a criminal but violating WADA's code is not a criminal infraction. Meldonium is a kiosk pick-me-up that is legally available to hundreds of millions.

You keep telling yourself that as Daniil Savelev is suspended for using the officially and correctly identified PED known as Meldonium, the same as his fellow Russian criminal Sharapova.

Yep. As you see, Bartelby's "sugar pill" / pro-Russia propaganda lies continue. Nevermind the specific, incontrovertible reason Meldonium was developed, and why Danill Savelev--in 2024 (and long after this PED had been examined and re-examined) still took the drug for one and only one reason--the same shared by the corrupt Sharapova.

Respect the OG doper!

Meldonium is of no therapeutic or performance-enhancing value.

If it allowed Russian soldiers to hop, skip and jump all over Afghanistan every Western drug company would be on to it.

Not one of them has and the two respected drug researchers that were interviewed at the time of the Sharapova debacle said it was of absolutely no value.

Meldonium potentially enhances overall health by increasing oxygen delivery to the body cells. It enhances the body’s ability to use oxygen more efficiently during intense physical activity. It helps maintain higher levels of exertion with less fatigue by improving the flow of blood and oxygen to muscles.

This increased flow of oxygen supports better endurance and stamina, which is necessary for various forms of physical performance.

One of the ways in which Meldonium works is by reducing muscle fatigue. It does so by minimizing the buildup of lactic acid, which is the byproduct of intense exercise. It leads to muscle soreness and decreased performance.

Meldonium helps individuals perform greatly and more intensely by reducing lactic acid accumulation in muscle areas.

Meldonium is used by bodybuilders to increase muscle mass and endurance. However, like any other drug Meldonium also possesses some benefits and side effects, which are mentioned below.

  • Enhanced Endurance
Bodybuilders who do intense workouts might face problems with muscle endurance. Meldonium may help improve endurance by increasing the oxygen delivery to the muscles. It may also improve the stamina which ultimately enhances more sets and repetitions.

  • Reduced Fatigue
During intense workouts, your muscles produce energy anaerobically when the oxygen is already limited. It produces lactic acid as a byproduct. When lactic acid starts to accumulate in the muscles it causes a burning sensation, leading to muscle fatigue.

Meldonium helps reduce muscle fatigue by minimizing lactic acid buildup during intense workouts. When no fatigue is involved, a bodybuilder may better focus on their workout sessions.

  • Faster Recovery
It may also aid in recovery between periods of physical exertion. It speeds up recovery and promotes blood circulation. This further helps in clearing the metabolic waste products from muscles and delivers essential nutrients to the body.

  • Increased Training Intensity
With reduced fatigue, faster recovery, and increased endurance a bodybuilder can more effectively focus on their training sessions. They can prolong their training sessions and achieve their desired bodybuilding results.

Where are your references to this ... mere potentiality?

This is quoted material so what bodybuilding literature are you referencing?

Yup, they took out Sharapova and ended her career. Meanwhile the Polish lady got a 1 month vacation during her 1 month vacation.
I mean Swiatek did miss 3 tournaments while being suspended, 1x WTA 500, 2x WTA 1000. By hey, let's not spoil a good story with facts......

Seriously though. That has been pointed out many, many times. I'm sure you know that 'she got suspended in offseason' has been a debunked myth. An honest question - why are you repeating such a blatantly incorrect statement?

This is not the evidence she led at CAS which it accepted. She took it due to her run-down condition after her first Wimbledon win.

The doctor who recommended it gave evidence.

Yes she said she took it to treat her diabetes.

Meldonium can shift metabolism to favor carbohydrate metabolism rather than fat metabolism. Using carbohydrates as fuel to produce energy requires less oxygen, so this shift is beneficial under low oxygen conditions. In the field of heart disease, the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen, and meldonium has been shown to be very beneficial in the treatment of this disease. There is also evidence that meldonium is also beneficial under low oxygen conditions caused by intense endurance exercise.

She was wrong. In any event, no one has ever suggested that Meldonium was recommended for diabetes.

The manufacturer, whose advertising you quote, recommends it without much evidence for heart conditions.

And, as I added above, her physician says that he recommended it for her run-down state at the CAS hearing.

In her press conference when she announced her doping case, she definitely said she took meldonium to treat her diabetes.

Meldonium, the diverted heart drug

10/03/2016

Meldonium, incriminated in the positive test of Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova, is basically a drug that protects heart cells and is sold only in Eastern countries. In recent years, it has been widely diverted for doping purposes.

It was the Cologne anti-doping laboratory that first pointed out the phenomenon: its analysts “regularly found it when searching for other substances,” Michel Audran, professor of biophysics at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Montpellier and anti-doping advisor to many sports federations, explained to AFP. In 2015, a monitoring program was launched and finally convinced them of the misuse of Meldonium. Thus, out of the 8,320 samples analyzed by Professor Wilhelm Schänzer’s laboratory, 2.2% (or approximately 180) tested positive for this substance, in athletes whose hearts were apparently in perfect health.

This ratio rose to more than 15% among Russian, Ukrainian, Baltic athletes, etc. and strength sports (67%) and endurance sports (25%) were widely represented, revealed Pierre-Jean Vazel, former coach of athletes Christine Arron and Ronald Pognon, on his blog on March 4. This can be explained by the fact that Meldonium is a pure product of the Soviet pharmacopoeia. Invented in 1975 in what was not yet Latvia by Professor Ivars Kalvins, it has never received marketing authorization outside the former Soviet republics where it is still used under the name Mildronate for the prevention of myocardial infarction and the treatment of its after-effects.

According to Professor Audran, Meldonium is also prescribed in Eastern Europe for cardiac arrhythmia, arteriosclerosis and diabetes. It lowers the heart rate and brings more oxygen to the heart. And what is good for the heart muscle is good for the other muscles: it increases endurance and has an effect on recovery”. So many virtues that recall those of EPO, another drug diverted for doping purposes. Meldonium has long since crossed borders and benefits from an attractive price (less than 20 euros per box) on the internet.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was alerted by the results of the program conducted in Cologne and included Meldonium on the list of prohibited substances on January 1, 2016 on the grounds that it was “widely used by athletes without medical reason and for the sole purpose of increasing their performance.”
