haha mightyrick does serena pay you? she literally offered to shove a tennis ball down a line judge's throat...this "Serena has a temper and throws tantrums and is super annoying to watch because of all the superflous venom she spews" is not new.
True story.

Pay me? Unlike most on this board, I don't hate players. I respect all of their talent. I respect all of the hard work they do to get there. On court, during a match, when emotions are high and competition is intense, passionate players behave passionately.

If a player yells, screams in anger, criticizes a call on a critical point, cheers when they draw an error, I really don't care. It is sport. It is the heat of battle between two warriors in a coliseum. It isn't a finishing class where they are being judged for etiquette, manners, and niceness. It is brute-force competition. It is *on* the court.

But, Serena Williams is absolutely a beautiful person. She is generous. She speaks well of all her opponents. She is sweet. Her and her family have seen a lot of adversity in their lives and has done nothing but give back to the world.

You guys really need to stop berating these players for being the impassioned warriors they are. Go watch ballroom dancing or something.

I wonder how much Serena's romantic breakup with Mouratouglou is behind this erratic year? He's still her coach, but not her lover anymore...that's gotta be VERY WEIRD.

Serena looked old and slow out there today.

I wrote off the Aussie open to injury

I wrote off the French Open as Serena has been weak on clay.

Now I'm really starting to think she's on the down and down.

She could change our perception with a strong showing at the US Open... but if she doesn't then I'll be starting to think we've seen the last of the Williams sisters... after about 16 years of relative dominance

I didn't know they'd stopped dating. When did that happen?
Not sure exactly, but the speculation is that the liaison ended a few months back, when she tweeted something dramatic like "Now I am alone. Me. Solo"...

The commentators on the BBC were talking about the end of her romantic relationship with him, so it must be a known thing in tennis circles.

Also Sam Querrey was very upset by the breakup of his romantic relationship in the last year or two, and his results took a nosedive into the toilet.

Wozniacki, however, seems to be doing better since breaking up with McIlroy. So it's all individual, and has nothing to do with a person's sex. Men and women can be equally vulnerable...or not.

Hmm...in reading this article...maybe having lost to Cornet just when they broke up back in February made Serena extra-vulnerable to losing to her again, with all the bad memories of the breakup on top of the loss? Speculation, of course, but it seems quite possible.

"... Williams’s connection with Mouratoglou, just over 18 months ago, was the beginning of a renaissance in her game that saw her win four of the next six grand slams. Although neither ever admitted a romantic dimension to their relationship, neither did they expressly deny it, and Williams’s bitter rival, Maria Sharapova, made caustic reference last summer to the fact that Mouratoglou was married. ..."

wow ... huh ... he's married?!?!?

Yes Patrick is married and he has two kids! I like Serena BUT I think this is karma when you sleep with a married man you pay a price. Serena NEVER should of gotten involved with Patrick until he got divorced!

I have a suspicion that Patrick like a lot of married men went back to his wife! The break up was clearly over the divorce Serena like a lot of women is delusional if she thinks a married man will leave his wife for her! Married men rarely leave their wives and Patrick has two kids.

I recall Patrick Mouratoglu boasting at the end of last season that Serena could very well do a clean sweep of all 4 Slams in 2014!

Now that she has made early exits at 3 of the 4, I bet he wished he'd kept his lip buttoned. Talk about jinxing her chances!

^^ funny and accurate post, Pound cat.

I am watching this match on espn3 and Martina N was really peddling BS. Serena hit a forehand long and Martina said "She is not releasing enough. The strings are too lively for Serena to control the ball with that swing". It was struck tentatively. The strings had nothing to do with it.

I saw the first set but how did Serena manage to lose. Did Cornet play like she did in Dubai....Did Serena level dip?

I'm watching the 3rd set right now. Cornet really stepped up from the baseline. I'm surprised at how she was rallying toe to toe with Serena and she had a clear edge in backhand to backhand rallies. Serena hit a horrific volley at 40-40 in the game she got broken in. Her serve didn't look that good today either.

Serena's body language though...ridiculous. She stumbles and flails her arms around when she misses a shot. Too much theatrics.

Serena chokes, gets tight and stops moving her feet and sprays the ball. Cornet played well staying close to the baseline. With her half-assed preparation (not playing a warm up grass tourney), Sererna's not going to win future slams.

Serena breasts look fuller and larger she could indeed be pregnant and the hormonal imbalances are affecting her.
If that's true she's been pregnant for the last 20 years. Serena has always been "moody". With age, her testosterone levels and progesterone levels are in a state of flux. And yes... all women do have low levels of testosterone.
