Sad to see former tennis player posting pics with pickleball trophies

Legend
I have at least three facebook friends who were good tennis players in their primes who have taken up pickleball and now post pics with pickleball trophies. It's pretty sad, why not just say "I've given up playing a legit sport, but look at how good I am at this game."

Tennis requires alot of time commitment. At least 3x hitting a week along with training outside (running/lifting/biking etc). For those of us with toddlers, kids, wife, long work hours- to compete at a high level at an older age- is just to hard sometimes.

The easier way can be sports that don't require alot of commitment. Pickleball? I don't think I need to lift weights...or run 6 miles on my off-day to compete at a high level. Maybe I'm wrong- but I really feel like tennis at a high level- can almost be like picking up a second job. A quick snapshot of my life is 2 hours monday bike/run, tuesday 1 1/2 tennis, wednesday 1 hour run, thursday 1 1/2 tennis 1 hour bike, friday 1 1/2 tennis, saturday 1 1/2 tennis, sunday rest

In between all that- I try to get an extra run/bike or lift weights in- between toddler naps. I have a garage gym + spin bike + etc

One of my former tennis coaches decided to take up pickleball about four months ago and since his ranking went up so fast, he has decided to become a PB pro. He is now about #80 in the world already and fast-rising.

Tyson Mcguffin was a competitive junior tennis player.

I’m all for more people getting into racquet/ paddle sports. When trying to spend time with someone who doesn’t play any racquet sports, tennis is the hardest to enjoy. Table tennis, badminton, racquetball and pickleball are easier to play down to their level IMO. What I can’t stand is the PB community trying to take over tennis courts. If they didn’t think they were entitled to the courts and painted lines on tennis courts I wouldn’t have any issues.

Question: has everyone tried pickleball?

Down here in South America, it appears that pickle ball is a non threat. Every time I describe pickleball to someone here, I am told with absolute certainty that it will never take here. But they do complain about pádel.

I’m glad I taught my wife tennis a few years ago. Otherwise, I would sit and watch her do Pilates (maybe help her out with some stretches;)) at home or go walk/bike at the beach than think of playing pickleball together. We would like to think that we are both good athletes and PB is not the sport for us.

Correct he played junior college tennis and was a 2 star recruit according to TRN.

Though McGuffin, 32, is a former 5.5 ranked tennis player, he came to realize years earlier that he wasn’t quite good enough to play tennis professionally. But he still had a lot of competitive fire and decided to channel that toward pickleball.

Within about six months, he was able to hang with some of the top players in the sport and a few men who were ranked in the top 10 nationally.

“Right then and there, I was like, ‘You know what, I’m going to pursue this with my time,'” McGuffin said.

It blows my mind there is an 80th ranked pickle ball player.

I have never played pickle but I have played next to it many times.

I remember when Tyson was playing USTA as a 5.0 in the PNW. I watched a couple of my friends beat him and his partner in a super close doubles match at Sectionals one year. He's a good athlete.

Tyson was one of several really good 5.0+ tennis players or coaches from the Northwest that jumped fully into pro pickleball about 7 or 8 years ago because they got instant success. Our former teaching pro at my club was a 5.5 woman with a top 5 national ranking in tennis in her age group. In her first year playing pickleball for fun, she won one of the big national tournaments. In only her second year of playing pickleball, she won the US Open doubles title. She now is featured in Head pickleball commercials and print ads, and she's got a gig doing clinics across the country inbetween playing tournaments. Great for her. She's achieved more in pickleball than she could ever hope to do in tennis. However, what sucks is that her Mom still has a leadership position at our tennis club and is actively working to replace our tennis courts with pickleball!

Anyway, to answer the question, yes I tried pickleball once. I went to a beginner level clinic while I was on vacation. I was about 48 years old at the time, but I was easily the youngest person there by at least 20 years. The people were very sociable, but I didn't have much fun dinking around with the codgers and instantly being the best player there. I was also a bit cheesed at the horrible line calling by the oldies. Anyway, I personally did not feel like it was a sport. Movement was minimal, especially in doubles. It was OK for goofing around, similar to something like cornhole, but it's nothing in comparison to tennis for me. I don't have a problem with others playing pickleball if it's fun for them, I just want them to leave our tennis courts alone!

There’s TWO count them TWO pro pickle circuits right now because TWO billionaires are fighting over who controls pickle ball.

Each rival groups already drawn up plans for their own Pickleball Hal of Fame

I never got into facebook, I thought it was just a fad and will go away like myspace.

Ah -- the OP was commenting about friends saw on Facebook who'd turned into Picklers -- hence my reference.

I'm with you though, never got into it and turned out to be a wise decision.

Pickleball is dangerous. One of my team members broke his ankle playing pickleball and is out for the season.

I occasionally play PB (dubs) with a group that includes several of my 4.5/5.0 tennis playing buddies (all singles players) and also some 5.0 dedicated PB players.
It's a lot of fun.

How much can pro pickleball players make compared to padel?

The top Padel guys' 2022 earnings:

1- Juan Lebron: €350.800

...

10 - Federico Chingotto: €144.100

#1 pickleball player earned $70K in paddle endorsement alone in 2019 then switched brands and now earns $500K a year for paddle endorsement. 16 year old #1 female player earns high six figures total prize money and endorsements. Much more money in pickleball vs padel for the #1 players. Top 5 can earn good money but below that the players need outside jobs.
