Safin says Agassi should give titles, money back

PARIS (AP)—Former No. 1-ranked Marat Safin believes that Andre Agassi should give his tennis titles back after confessing he tested positive for a banned substance during his career and lied about it to the ATP.

Agassi admitted in his autobiography “Open” that he used crystal meth in 1997 and failed a drug test, a result he says was thrown out after he lied by saying he “unwittingly” took the substance.

Safin, who plans to retire this month, said in an interview with L’Equipe newspaper on Tuesday that Agassi should “give his titles, his money and his Grand Slam titles” back.

“I’m not defending the ATP, but what he said put it in a delicate position,” Safin said. “The ATP allowed him to win a lot of tournaments, a lot of money. It kept his secret. Why does he need to be so cruel with it?”

Agassi, who retired in 2006, won 60 titles, including eight Grand Slams, during his career. He recently told The Associated Press that he had to speak about his lies because he couldn’t live with it anymore.

“If he is as fair play as he says he is, he has to go to the end,” Safin said. “You know, the ATP has a bank account and he can give the money back if he wants.”

Safin, who will retire after this week’s Paris Masters, won the 2000 U.S. Open and 2005 Australian Open. The 29-year-old Russian said he isn’t going to write his autobiography when his career will be over.

“Me, I don’t need money,” he said. “The question is: Why did he do this? What is done is done. Does he hope to sell more books? It’s absolutely stupid.”

What do his slam titles have to do with his 1997 use of cystal meth? He should only return titles won during his meth usage if anything.

Yes. Agassi hopes to sell lots and lots of books. And you know what...it's working.

I agree, and in 1997 he didnt win any titles and his prize-money was about 80,000 USD lol

I always thought that Safin is stupid.
Now I know.
Fortunately he will be forgotten soon.
Agassi won't ...

Why should he have to give back his titles, Safin is stupid for saying that. The drugs werent even performance enhancing, it was crystal meth and he did it when he wasnt winning. Does safin also think that every other tennis player who has ever done drugs should also give back their titles.

People are misunderstanding Safin.

He's not ACTUALLY saying for Agassi to return anything.

He's saying, basically; "Hey, if you're going to be a jackass and say all of these things to ruin your reputation and damage the ATP's reputation- and then say you're feeling GUILTY for it all, then why don't you return your trophies and prize money and you won't feel as guilty"

It's Russian sarcasm (the best sense of sarcasm in the world, IMO). Don't take it seriously enough to believe he actually thinks returning anything would be wise.

He is just ridiculing Agassi for a stupid move on his part.

Safin is poking fun at the self-serving nature of Agassi's revelations. He is not literally asking him to give the money back, only making fun of his motives which appear pious but are calculated moves. He is unmasking the hypocrite. Most people other than those whose retirement future may benefit from Agassi's blessings (like Roddick) have come out with similar opinions, be it Nadal, Navratilova or Safin.

yep that's how i read it but apparently some people here read it differently.

Personally, I don't mind his meth use, long as he did not use it to win any money or titles.

But Safin has every right to criticize him if he wants to. He is inside the circle, knows about all professional aspects of it. Most of them are in it for money.

None of you armchair pundits can see it like he does, or Nadal, or Fed.

you are really on an amazing streak aren't you SUgaresh?

you wont give it a rest... will you?

thank god for Agassi's revelations, as it seems his skeletons are giving way for yours to come out too....

jfc....

So is Safin going to return the money to those of us who paid to see him tank against qualifiers? No. He should shut up.

People should read the original interview to see what Safin mean IN CONTEXT. I think the sarcasm is ridicule is more apparent. It's clear he doesn't actually

think that Agassi should return anything. He's just criticizing his motives.

"He feels guilty? So let him just give back his titles, money, his Grand Slams!" Safin told French sports daily L'Equipe.

"If he is so fair play, he should go all the way. You know, ATP have a bank account, he can refund if he wants to."

Safin, currently playing his last tournament in Paris this week, also questioned Agassi's motives for revealing his past drug use in his autobiography "Open".

In his book, Agassi revealed he had used and tested positive for crystal meth in 1997 but escaped punishment by lying to the investigators.

The American has since spoken about his remorse over his actions but Safin said was concerned about the way in which he confessed.

"I won't write my biography. I do not need any money. The question is: why did he do it?" Safin said.

"What's done is done. He hopes to sell more books. But he is completely stupid!"

"I do not defend the ATP but what he said put them in a bad position. ATP allowed him to win a lot of tournaments, to make a lot of money.

"They kept his secret so why be so cruel with them? There are times you need to be able to shut up."

Earlier this month, the World Anti-Doping Agency said they were investigating whether to lay fresh charges against Agassi.

My point is safin has no room to call out agassi for disrespecting tennis, fans, tournament sponsors, etc. The guy has spent his last season saying how tired he is of tennis, but he still shows up to lose first round and collect a check.:-?

Where did you read that he said that,I didn't read anywhere .Why do you twisting his words ,just to make your post meaningful????

It's because he didn't understand the hyperbole in Safin's off-handed remarks.

I do have trouble getting sarcasm from text. My bad.

I guess I just wanted my post to be "more meaningful".

I do realize he didn't say everything I listed. I'm just saying whatever his dig is at agassi, he has no room to talk.

Safin is right, however....

I wrote a post over 2 years ago talking about the corruption in the ATP with PROOF.... Now that Corruption is known... There are people who should take responsibility and should be brought to justice... Gasquet, Canas, are no less guilty than Agassi or Nadal or anyone else who is on steroids or drugs.. also..i would bet money Agassi was on steroids and blake as well...

Safin doesn't give a **** and says wat he wants..he knows what really goes on and he's a rebel..that's why i like him
