When you look at these stats, you wouldn't expect the same scoreline.

nah, not really. Stats line up with the scoreline. See the additions in post #2.

2nd set was 6-3, not 6-2, I had made a typo.

1. Official stats are here at

https://web.archive.org/web/2005020...n.com:80/en_AU/scores/stats/day18/1701ms.html

Aces, DFs, BP conversions line up.
Total # of points : Lines up for Hewitt. For Safin, I have 2 less than official count.(120 vs 122)

Tennisabstract has the same count as mine.

http://www.tennisabstract.com/charting/20050130-M-Australian_Open-F-Lleyton_Hewitt-Marat_Safin.html

2. 54 W to 36 UEs for safin by official count
I have 52 W to 38 UEs for safin

33 W to 22 UEs for hewitt by official count
I have 31 W to 23 UEs for hewitt

safin is 25/42 at the net by official count
I have him at 22/39

hewitt is 10/17 at the net by official count
I have him at 9/16

Comments :

1. Hewitt played a near perfect 1st set. 13 W+forced errors to just 1 UE. Safin played a bad set. (10W+forced errors to 13 UEs)

2. As far as the 3rd set goes, Hewitt had only 5 UEs, hit 23 winners+forced errors. (+18)
Safin had 11 UEs, hit 34 winners+forced errors. (+23), an excellent set overall.

Split into 2.

Until 4-2 ,

Safin had 17 Winners+forced errors to 9 UEs - good tennis, but not great
Hewitt had 15 winners+forced errors to 2 UEs.(+13) - great.

then for the rest of the set.

Safin had 17 winners+forced errors to just 2 UEs (+15) - great
Hewitt had 8 winners+forced errors to 3 UEs(+5) - good tennis.

Hewitt's main fault was the DF on BP at 4 all.
Otherwise , he played a pretty good set.

Safin just powered through hewitt from down 2-4 in this set.

The rallies were longer in the 2nd set and hewitt's level dipped. Hence the UEs from him in that 2nd set.

Safin did not face a BP in the 2nd set, was broken once in the 3rd set, but he played clearly better in the 3rd set as the above W+Fe to UE stats +the extra break show. Just that hewitt was also quite a bit better in the 3rd set compared to the 2nd set.

3. Safin hit 30 winners+forced errors to just 5 UEs in the final set by my count.(+25)
Hewitt hit 20 winners+forced errors to 6 UEs in the final set by my count.(+14)

Safin won by just overpowering hewitt in this set as well.

4. Safin was just ruthless/GOATing in the last set and half, serve, groundstrokes, return, passing shots, even excellently executed dropshots

from 2-4 down in the 3rd set till the end, he had 47 winners+forced errors to just 7 UEs.

I will say this though for first 2 sets and half, most of the highlight reel shots were from Hewitt.
some great passing shots, shots on the run, lobs, amazing defense in getting back some of the shots etc.

5. Safin wasn't getting enough 1st serves in in the 1st 2 sets. Hewitt was returning his serve extremely well and suffocating him on his serve. It was only from the 3rd set onwards when Safin started getting a much higher % of serves in and into a superb serving rhythm that he started to get good amount of free points.

6. Safin had moments of frustration up until mid-way through the 3rd set because of some of his own UEs and because of some of Hewitt's crazy retrievals. Only after that, he played in the calm mode that he played the SF vs federer.

7. Hewitt was called for a foot fault once at 4-2 and once at 4 all in the 3rd set.

8. Hewitt's serve% was an issue for him in this match. 48.78%. Slightly better serving from him and the match could've been closer.

Interesting to see how much of an edge Hewitt had in fh winners. And the edge Safin had in winners at net(11-1)

Probably Hewitts defence making the difference there - though Hewitt actually had a good forehand and it it very well during that event as well.

Great work @abmk

Hewitt's FH was pretty good in the match.
Safin forced more errors than hewitt with the FH though. (I don't have the stats for that).

Plus what NatF said.

As far as the net part goes:
Safin came to the net far more to finish the points in general (he came to the net quite a bit in the federer match as well)

Hewitt came to the net mainly in the 4th set to finish off some of the points - he was finding it tough to stay with an absolutely on-fire Safin just from the baseline.
also safin dragged him to the net 3-4 times with droppers/short slices in that 4th set.
