yep the turning point for me was that miss after the long rally...poor poor miss. It looked to me he was going to forehand volley it but then he changed his mind and backhanded it

Marat pulls some of the most disgusting efforts this year.. simply pathetic to watch.. he is about 50% of the player he used to be but he can still easily beat guys like Robredo.. only a little effort required and he had none of it today..

His typical match consists of hitting 1 bad shot and then tanking 3-4 shots because he was still upset of that one.. then playing 4-5 decent shots, missing another one on big points and then tanking 3-4 shots again.. its amature tennis ..

and about his game overall:

1. His serve is non existent right now.. he has less lift in his legs and especially second serve suffers a lot.. he never ever double faulted more than 3 times in a match, now he does it 4-5 times and on big points too.

2. He has NO first serve return.. no explosive movement..

3. His forehand as crappy as it used to be seems to be misfiring even more now..

4. backhand is the only shot that is more or less decent.. but even that today he made about 25 UE off that side..

5. No defense..

His knee issues were/are more serious than I thought unfortunately..

and has even bigger issues with his head..

Agreed.
Safin left his entire game on-court at Melbourne Park back in January 2005.
Never the same player after that match with Federer!

Does he have the same coach, if that is the same guy then his coach is not looking good at all.

I think that it is from multiple problems, eveyone in his camp needs to be refreshed and reved back up, all the time off and slacking off just caught up to everyone.

Time is on his side

And the bottom line from Marat himself: (National post canada, Aug. 9)

Safin is one of the most popular players on the tour -- a relentlessly charming, introspective, transparent man. And though he seems constantly on the verge of smashing the racquet for good, he keeps on chasing his game, and himself.

"Why quit? To quit is the easiest solution, to just run away from the problems, but the problems will catch you sooner or later," says Safin. "Tennis has been great for me ... tennis brought me up, all the money that I make, all the places that I visited, the hotels that I stay in, the people I met -- everything that happened in my life is just thanks to tennis.

"Without tennis, I wouldn't be nobody. Just because the tennis is ****, I can't complain and say that it's enough ... I still think I can be in the top 10, for sure. Tennis right now is pretty open. I keep on trying. The money I have, it's not like I'm suffering and starving and living in the streets. I have a great life, and I still have to give back to tennis, for what tennis gave to me."

and why is this a surprise to anyone?

Exactly. The guy is letting his talent down big time.

Grrrr. I still remember a few years back when his body turned up, but his mind didn't. He threw the game. It was either the Canadian Masters or Cinny. The ATP fined him.

Never had any respect for him since. People pay loads to watch him, and he (metaphorically) spits in their faces.

The punters help pay for your sponsorship deals Marat. Yet you treat them with contempt.

Either give up the game and go be a playboy, or go out there and give it 110%.

BAH!

He was fined for tanking in R1 of AO in 1998 & it's a long time for you to be holding a grudge. Time for you to get over it, although I don't think Marat really cares one bit whether you not like him or not.

PS he thinks gambling is wrong.....he works for his money.

He was also fined during one of The Masters. Albeit a few years ago.I haven't the energy to trawl though the archives to find out which one.

Sorry, I cant abide him. He goes into my short list of players I would turn off along with Kafelnikov (until he retired, obviously), Coria and Stepanek.

He was recently fined 10,000 for refusing ot do a press interview after a match v. soe low-ranked player.

I definitely am with you re: Coria and Stepanek...and they haven't ever been fined for anything to the best of my knowledge.

It's a real pain watching Safin these days. What a waste of talent. Right words, wrong actions. I hope he will find some strengh to raise his game a notch, otherwise it will be really hard for him to go on like this.

Get your act together Marat, otherwise try to win this year Davis cup with Russia and resign. Soon I will demand payment for watching you. It's not entertaining any more, just an uphill struggle.
