Shoulda have made a poll so I can see how many people thinsk he'll lose in the qualifiers... but that would be kinda mean...

Used to be a big Safin fan, still have feelings for him lol.

A relatively easy draw indeed, it's about time and it should be a humbling experience for him and his fans.

I hope he qualifies and maybe wins the tournament, it will only add to his legacy.

He can still add a poll to this thread. I don't think it matters since Safin doesn't have the heart or the desire to win anymore.

Ever since Safin lost his first round in San Jose, I've been thinking that he'd be better off playing challengers to get his ranking up a bit, or even qualifiers to get more matches under his belt.

Getting wildcards to tournaments and almost always lose in the 1st round is not gonna be good for him.

If he's serious about improving his game, he should play more challengers. Yes he should be more humble; I heard that Agassi pulled it off (playing many challengers to get his rank up from 100's, and then win more GS).

Not that I'm saying Safin will win more grand slams but playing challengers/qualifiers is a smart move for him for now, IMO.

Yeah, as someone who has also gotten a bit numb at all of the guy's losses, I'll be watching how he does here closely.

I've chalked up his bad play to a mixture of lack of confidence and frustration that he can't move like he once did. But if he can't get through qualies that might be a sign of an even bigger problem.

Okay the players in Marat's quarters are ranked as follows:

1167, 319, 492, unlisted, 1662, 296 (5th seed)

OMG that IS an easy draw..

But Munich isn't nearly as strong as Barcelona. Most of the top players play in Barcelona. Munich's top seed is Richard Gasquet.

Gasquet said in his interview yesterday that he will not play in Munich after some nagging injuries.

I will do that later tonight when I get home, but I will take your word for it.

I guess it was a last minute drop out ?? anyway, this is not a true challenger, it is a qualie to get into a major tournament draw.. Maybe he got a direct Entry by someone else dropping out of main draw ??? and also i thought he was playing in a challenger or Futures event ??? LOL:)

Now that Safin is playing Qualifying matches it gets even easier for ManEater to get close to him... since she doesn't have to chase him around the stadium... and no security for qualifiers too! So, ManEater, take a chance!

That's because he got a WILD CARD, he plays Carlos Berlocq of Argentina. After Gasquet withdrew, because I read in his interview that he will take a few days off with some injuries.

Here is the Main Draw:

Darn it. He should have played qualies! Now he'll lose against Berlocq probably because he doesn't have the confidence to pull it out.

People stop giving him the stupid wild cards, let him remember what it takes to earn it.

OH MY GOD, the reason why he played qualies is because he COULD NOT get a wild card then?

I thought he CHOSE to play the qualies!!!

Now he's given a wild card... yeah those stupid people should stop giving him wildcard!!!!

Anyways if Safin's out of 1st or 2nd round again he can go *** ***** and crash and burn for all I care now!!

Yeah Safin has turned into a giant pathetic tool. Not willing to earn his keep anymore, he has sunken to accepting handouts from tourney directors to prolong his sputtering career. Hopefully he drops far enough so that he doesn't make direct entry in RG and Wimbledon. I don't think he will get a wild card into those, at least not Wimby.

hehe! wow yea i guess... but i need to get rid of that brunette biaatch that was at his match the other day! she has to be dumped by june the 12h!

don't be mean :-( he said hes playing qualies so he can play some more matches and have practive with more time on the court, so i think its just a way of slowly building his confidence up too.. maybe he feels he needs to start working his way up from scratch again so he can work he way past some of his errors.. don't be mean to marat... he's loverrly :-(

From what I can tell, as many as someone is willing to give them.

Safin is still a big enough name, if not perhaps as big a draw, to get attention from tournament directors. But he's going to have to start getting past the first round moree often, or they'll soon be turning a deaf ear.

On the one hand, I think this is quite unfair to some other chap who might be able to do something more with a direct entry spot. But on the otherhand, GS winners will often get priority over other players no matter how long ago it was since their last title. I guess, somebody is hedging their bets a little. Imagine if Safin did do something at your tournament. Well, just look how many threads have been made about him when he's losing, and there's your answer.

This goes back to the question I asked earlier; How many wild cards are a player allowed to accept during a season?

The guy is a great has-been, good looking and a complete clown on court when he works himself into a tantrum, which is more often than not due to the huge difference between his expectations and his actual capabilities. Unfortunately that sells more tickets than good tennis.

You have also the off chance that your tourney will be the one that heralds the comeback of the great Safin if he manages to get his act together.

All in all, it is not so strange that tourney managers consider him for a WC, is it?

I am not saying he doesn't deserve the wild cards, I honestly could care less if he get them actually. But I remember reading somewhere on the ATP or WTA website, where a player can accept up to a certain number of wild cards in a season, that's all. I know he has received a few this year, but I forgot the limit

Here, I found this on another forum. Supposedly comes from the ATP '08 rulebook.

Players may accept up to five (5) main draw singles wild cards into ATP tournaments during any ATP Circuit Year. Wild cards shall only count toward the annual limit if the player would have been a direct acceptance on the original acceptance list.
Additional exceptions are outlined below.
a) Players who cannot participate in ATP Tournaments for six (6) months because of a physical injury may petition the ATP for one additional wild card.
b) In the event that a player’s position in the South African Airways ATP Ranking (Singles) is insufficient to make him a Direct Acceptance on the forty-two (42) day Acceptance List, then he shall be released from his commitment to that Tournament, unless offered a wild card to the Contract Tournament within twenty-four (24) hours of the entry deadline. Such wild card accepted by a player shall not count in the player's annual limitation of five (5) wild cards in singles.
c) Any player who becomes thirty-five (35) years of age by December 31 of an ATP Circuit Year shall be exempt from the wild card limitation if he is:
i) A former singles Champion of a Grand Slam; or
ii) A former singles Champion of the ATP World Championship or Tennis Masters Cup; or
iii) A former No.1-ranked player in the South African Airways ATP Rankings (Singles) prior to January 2000; or
iv) A former No.1 player in the year-end ATP Race.
d) Players may petition the ATP for exceptions to these limitations

Thank you very much, I knew I read it somewhere, but was just lazy to look for it.

The ATP Rulebook is a PDF file. You can save it to your computer so you don't have to work so hard to find info in it. :)

Go to the ATP site, scroll down to the very bottom of the page, click on 'About the ATP' and then click on the link for the Rulebook.

I already have both ATP and WTA PDF files on my lap top, just too lazy to go through it.

Sorry guys.

I think you need to be punished for your laziness. Perhaps you should buy a round for everyone. ;)

(you know there's a search function for pdf files, or are you just feeling very very lazy today, silly man?).

I have been feeling really lazy for the past 2 weeks and need to get my act together.

For that, I will stop by CC's bistro and buy a round for everyone. ;)

oh no thats not true.. he's looking very good! just a shame he aint playing as good as he looks.. but come on thats not even possible .. not even roger can play as good as marat looks..
im bored of talking about marat now.. enough..the guy im seeing is actually better looking.. suprise suprise

Safin has just broken Korolev in the qualies. Q: what other former #1s played in qualies? Anyone? Did Agassi when he dropped down to something like 200 back in 2007? No matter what, this is true indication that he is really trying to get back. I hope he qualifies and gets a better match than what he has been getting with Warwinka and Ferrero. Davai, Marat!!

Not bad at all. He's got a great shot at beating Berdych I think. Maybe Marat makes a run here......wouldn't that be sweet.
