Which player do you prefer the irratic tallent or the opportunist? Hewitt has achived more (as you can see below), but thats not everything.

Head 2 Head
Safin 6, Hewitt 5

Career Titles:
Safin 15, Hewitt 25

Grand Slams
Safin 2, Hewitt 2

Masters Series
Safin 3, Hewitt 2

Master Cup
Safin 0, Hewitt 2

Weeks at Number 1:
Safin 9, Hewitt 9

Hewitt has certainly had the more consistent results in his career. However, I think Safin beating both Sampras and Federer in their respective primes in Grand Slam finals really speaks volumes. If Safin had Hewitt's mentality....we would probably be arguing over whether Safin or Federer are the greatest ever.

Safin beat Federer in the Semis of the AO 2005, but yes, I agree that he is immensely talented,a dn if he was tronger mentally, he would be a threat to Federer's dominance.

Why do several of you have favourtie players with such different styles.?There are few more constrasting players in playing style and mental attitude

Actually i think hewitt did beat federer on his prime. 2003 davis cup vicotry right after federer's totall dominance at the master's cup, which any tennis historian will say is the start of federer's prime. and why we talking about what if safin had hewitt's mentality? why not if hewitt had safin's body. Man... hewitt is gone but the hating still lives on. I think safin is over ratted. Safin is not God if he was, he would have put out some Godly results.

Hewitt beat Federer BEFORE the Masters Cup, and thus before Federer's prime started. Masters Cup 2003 is when Federer really became the Maestro.

Safin is great but he is still overrated by alot of people. The so called theory that at his best he is a lock to win every event on every surface is extremely faulty. Even if he were more consistently at his best he would have a losing record with Federer, and have a hard time being ranked over Nadal due to Nadal's clay court dominance and good results on other surfaces. He has been "on" and lost to both Roddick and Hewitt in the past, he would have a winning head to head with them, but he would still have some losses to even those guys.

As it is he probably had more potential then Hewitt but Hewitt just flat out had the better career results wise. It has to be Hewitt.

I think they are both highly overrated and neither of them deserved two slams, and possibly not even one slam.

I don't see how Safin is good looking. Looks kind of weird to me. Weak chin, beady/ugly eyes, cheesy 12 year old's mustache, upturned "piggy" nose. Ugly.

You watch out now, someone might report this sort of posting to the ladies in the Ladies Thread.:-o

Too late SoBad, we're everywhere. LOL. IMO..Safin is the only really great looking guy on tour right now (since Rafter's departure). I could care less how he plays as long as he plays. :p

Every time I see safin and pathetic, cheesy facial hair, I'm reminded of "Shaggy" from Scooby-Doo. He even dresses the part, often wearing 60-70s looking clothes.

I like Hewitt because I play like Him. I am a counter puncher. I like Safin because, well, he is just a bad***! Also I like Hewitt because of his fire. I like Safin because he is fun to watch, he is either hitting winners or breaking racquets.

u idiot, hewitt has made 4 million dollars more than safin in prize money. read the posts..

Prize money doesn't matter, because Safin has made much much more in endorsement deals because of his good looks and charismatic personality.:-D

I still doubt that he's made that much more in endorsements..Hewitt himself is one of the highest in endorsements with over 10 million from video games, Yonex, Nike..

Haha yeah I heard that Hewitt stuff sells like hotcakes, especially in South America!:-o

Zuras, did you miss the whole retro revival?? Safin is very stylish. Everytime I see Hewitt, he reminds me of a spoiled sulky surfer-boy type who runs to mommy everytime he loses his shovel in the sand. Just an observation - I do think he is a very talented player who seems to be rapidly becoming more focused on other priorities - it happens. :-)

I dont see how career prize money is relevant really. I prefer to judge the players by their actions on the court and not their endorsmonts and photo shoots off the court.

Few corrections:

Safin won 5 Masters Series titles, not 3

Hewitt was a lot longer at number 1 (he finished 01 and 02 at #1 as well)

Argh I know this is a while back in the thread but argh, Hewitt is ranked higher than Safin. He has also had better results than Safin this year.

I don't dispute that at all - but my considerations when voting were geared more towards potential, injuries, and overall interest in competing in the occasional match.;)

Hewitt.

I'd notice that today's top men's player could effectively be seen as amped-up rebirths of the last generation. This is essentially based on comparing their games and styles of play. This is just an opinion so no need to get bent out of shape but this is how I equate them.

Federer = Sampras
Hewitt = Chang
Safin = Ivanisevic
Nadal = Muster
Nalbandian = Agassi

I base this off their current career paths, visible temperaments, style of game and obvious area of dominance.

Just a quick thought...

Fixed your list:

Federer = Becker
Roddick = Ivanisevic
Nadal = Chang
Nalbandian = Agassi
Safin = Stich
Davydenko = Kafelnikov
Hewitt = ???? Reminds me of Wilander, but that's not last generation.

It goes without saying that not all of these are improved models. Also not sure if Safin and Hewitt should be considered "top men" at this point. Sampras doesn't really have a correlary ATM, and probably never will since serve and volley is pretty much dead and I don't see much that's gonna bring it back with how fast the balls move these days.
