Safin to retire in 2010 >>>

G.O.A.T.
Marat Safin has revealed he will retire from tennis in 2010. The mercurial Russian is a two-time Grand Slam winner, but has plummeted down the world rankings this season as a result of injury and a loss of form.

"2010 will be my last season," said Safin. "I will be 30 years old and it will be time to move on to something different."

A serious knee injury has contributed to his slide to 63rd in the world, and he also split with coach Peter Lundgren in August.

"The season has been very tough for me. If I had won half the games I should have won, I would be in a completely different position."

Safin's career highlights came with his victories in the 2000 US Open and 2005 Australian Open, and he has also topped the world rankings.

However, he has been notoriously inconsistent, and missed most of the 2003 season because of injury and a lack of mental focus.

I think he will leave the game sooner:cry: At the rate he's going now, I can see him retire earlier.

That's what I was thinking. I would not be surprised if he won another Slam (Oz) and called it quits after that year's Masters Cup and/or Davis Cup campaign. '08 or '09 is as realistic as anything.

Either way, Safin will be missed.

Correction.......................in prison.

That's true. Probably after slapping a few too many of his pimpin' backhands. His backhand might a bit too strong if you know what I mean.

Correction.....porker player......turned defendant in a paternity suit.

That was funny.

Feels like the end of Animal House, where they show you what the boys end up doing for a living. Like,
Gynecologist, Beverly Hills, California.

Marat Safin, circa 2015. A happily single resident of Las Vegas, NV. Plays a lot of things other than tennis. Occasionally hits with the Agassi family and plays a pro-am or a seniors event. Gets his ass kicked by Hewitt or Santoro every time. Loses in straight sets to Paul Haarhuis in a seniors final then breaks all of his frames. Then he breaks all of his own frames as well.
Hangs out with Goran at Wimbledon. They crash the Champions Ball. They get caught trying to urinate in the punch. Together, they coach Bernard Tomic, who becomes a champion.

Retired ex top tennis players should learn from retired rock stars, like Gene Simmons and Tommy Lee (well, to me, they're retired!)... Reality Shows!!! Can you imagine "Short Fuse" Safin working as a tennis instructor with screwed up kids, f.e., just for the fun of us, tv spectators?! Bah, tv ratings would be crap, lol!

He'd much rather be in a nightclub than preparing for a silly game of tennis.

Safin is definitely one of the most fun players to watch of the current group, plus watching him hit that 2hbh is amazing. Plus you never know when he will blow up on court, which are so fun to watch, plus hes an amazing player.

I'd like to think, when somebody publicly declares a hard date for their retirement, they are also signalling an intent to make the most of those 4 years left in their pro career.

I really hope so!

I hope these last 4 years are productive ones.

So does this mean the "Will Safin ever live up to his potential threads" will stop in 2011 or 2012?

It's also frustrating to watch him blow leads and play impatient tennis.

Regarding your sig, you know it's 'than', not 'then'?

if safin gets one more gs title, which i think is totally possible, i will be content with his career. i think that in some demented way, safin likes being inconsistent.. right before losing to hass in this years us open, i said "mcstud, if safin wins this match, there is a VERY good chance that he can win this tournament".

guys, give safin a break............... he deserves better than this....... he is an excellent player.........

Of all the current players an in form Safin might have the best game matchup wise for Nadal, including Federer, especialy on slower surfaces like rebound ace and clay.

Haha, this thread is too funny...
Yet another one of the current retirement thread trends.

Anyways, 4 years may not seem like a lot, but it really is. And we'll just have to see when 2010 comes around, he may just change his mind. Hopefully, we'll see another burst of inspired tennis before he retires.

correction.....why did you stop our correction relay
Safin will create his own talk show, but will fail and he will create his own reality show but will fail lose all his money and become a pornographic actor

correction......................Hugh Hefner officially names Marat his successor as head pajama jam man at the Playboy Mansion, ruler of the Grotto.
