Sam Groth to star in New Reality TV Show

"My Tennis Life: Sam Groth" is a new reality TV series in the vein of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" or “Jeg er ambassadøren fra Amerika”.

The show promises all-areas access to Sam's Life on tour in the same warts-and-all manner as the afore-mentioned series:

"You’ll see good days, bad days, and everything in between. Join me as I take you behind the scenes of what life is really like on the tour – from fancy hotels to delayed flights, the highs of a win and lows experienced after tough matches, right down to the down time with my family and friends, I want to bring you along for the ride."

There will also be a WTA companion series featuring Nicole Gibbs.

I love the concept, and can't wait for the show. I hope it is not sensationalized and maintains the authenticity of life on tour. I'm not interested in seeing nude girls parade around on the screen gratuitously, or manufactured tension featuring Sam "fighting" with his family or neighbours.....

What does everyone think?

I'm not sure Sam Groth has the charisma to appeal to non tennis fans, but that's not important. It is airing on the Tennis Channel and aimed mainly at us tennis nuts.

Sounds interesting and I agree with pretty much everything you said here.

Except that I could probably cope with seeing a few nude girls parading around gratuitously or not. ;)

"Strong dislike for reality shows in general" + "no interest in Sam Groth" = would not watch this show even if I subscribed to the Tennis Channel. It sounds like a barely upgraded version of the "Bag Check" feature, which at least had the virtue of being brief.

Also, it is all too obvious that the player selected for this spectacle has the time to participate only because his on-court productivity is so low. I'm not suggesting that they had to recruit a GOAT candidate, but someone who is at least an occasional contender for small and medium titles could have provided a better balance of competitive and mundane story topics.

That doesn't quite wash, because his on-court productivity isn't really all that low. Because he's one of the handful of guys who has genuinely embraced both the singles and doubles draws, and actually has a couple titles and about 25% of his career earnings from dubs.

He's on court a lot more often than people realize because of this.

Now, that tells an awfully different story from the one where top 20 guys are trying to win 1000's and slams. But it's real, honest, blue collar style grinding to make a living. I think that's interesting, and a story worth telling. Plus he's Australian, so he'll probably get drunk and fight a lot.

A couple doubles titles and no main tour singles titles (or even singles finals) for a player who's pushing 30? I'd say that's low productivity. His last four singles slam losses were R1, Q1, R1, and R1. Not a lot to write home about. But perhaps fans of doubles action will tune in.

It doesn't matter what you, "would say," or what you think about his career. I was responding to what you DID say. You said he had plenty of time for reality TV because he washed out of tournaments early and had nothing else to do.

You were wrong.

Groth isn't desperately filling time. He played five rounds of grand slam tennis at the Aussie. Murray and Djokovic combined played six. He played fifteen rounds of grand slam tennis last year. Federer played twelve. He's got plenty of on court time to build a story around, and less time for the media than your average top ten diva. If you want the story of the guys who win slams, you don't need a reality TV production -- it's right there on the TV in front of you, for the whole world to see. This show's not about his push to become a legend -- it's about his struggles and challenges as he attempts to make it as a professional tennis player. Groth is a good case study for that.

We both know I didn't say that. Please don't invent quotations just so you can tack on pompous "you were wrong" pronouncements. I cited "low productivity" in my first post and again in my second. If you don't think that's the reason Groth is OK with spending his days with a television crew, fine, cling to your illusions. But a player his age who has never won anything significant (and knows he never will) is no longer primarily worried about trying to "make it" as a professional tennis player. He's probably more concerned about future career options after the retirement from the tour that is looming. How many more years does he want to spend as a journeyman? From that perspective, getting involved in TV now may turn out to be a smart choice for Groth.

Interesting, I hadn't thought about that. Do you think it is the same in Nicole Gibbs' case. They are sort of at opposite ends of their careers, so it's hard to figure out the motivation for each person participating.

Honestly, I wish Groth was a really good player (at least good enough to at least give the top 50 a decent run for their money). I'll look into the show, but I won't watch it.

Let me know how the show goes, my friend.

I think this could end up being a hoot. Sam is pretty down to earth, wiling to show his emotions and has a wicked sense of humour. From Challengers to Slams it will be a great insight into what it's really like to struggle to make a living on the circuit.

But yes, I'm actually interested in how tennis players live their lives. Provided that they're as accurate as you're hoping, maybe we'll learn a few things.

Should be very interesting. THe top guys get more than enough attention. We barely know what it's like being a journeyman top 200 player.

True. I am hoping for all access like that documentary beyond the baseline but less sleazy, more the nuts and bolts of the pro tour. Don't want the players pretending they are rock stars taking drugs when they are athletes.....

Agree. I actually wonder whether they have been filming content for a while. He was in practice court in Germany maybe the middle of last year and everyone else on the other courts was super serious and he was laughing and joking with a group of people, one of whom was filming. I just assumed they were his friends or hitting partners. The person filming wasn't using broadcast equipment. Maybe they were creating footage for a pitch at that stage? I was only there for one day.

Finally found: My Tennis Life: Nicole Gibbs on tennischannel.com and was not what I had expected. It only bits and pieces of what happening to them that last from 55 seconds to 2 minutes. It is label by episodes and just watch 10 - "Nicole Gibbs Recovery" runntime 2:04. Show her in some rehab working with a trainer and some exercises! It not a show but just very short flashes of what is happening in their career at the moment. It sort of like a self recording and/or someone doing it as a daily dairy format. I do not think it is worth the effort since it like once a week happening for such short duration of time and updates are two to three weeks behind in tennischannel posting it! I have no idea when or if it is shoe on Tennis Channel TV. Anyone know?
