Sampras Classic, Borg sour puss

Sampras was magnanamous in welcoming Federer to break his all time Grandslam record.

Where as Borg, fearing his record broken, first "predicted" Federer to win French, hoping Nadal would not equal then break his French Open record, now "predicts" Federer will lose in this Wimbledon, not breaking his all time glorious Wimbledon record.

I hope Nadal breaks Borg's French Open record next year, and Federer breaks his Wimbledon record this year.

I would love to see Federer matching Sampras record, and then seeing Sampras, as a true sport gentleman with fire in his belly, congratulates Federer for breaking his all time record.

I hope Borg's record would turn into just a footnote in tennis history.

I agree 100%.

I think that's a little bit harsh, although Borg's predictions are questionable. Borg's back-to-back FO/Wimby record may never be broken in any event.

Well Borg is free to offer his opinion although I personally don't trust his predictions too much, let's put it that way.Sampras is being a class act as he always was in his career, kudos to him that he isn't playing any mind games with Fed who is so close to breaking his record(not that Sampras was ever that type anyway,he alway let his racket do the talking).I also think Pete is identifying little with Fed as he certainly knows what's it like to be jumped on and written off by media.

(Unlike Borg.)

And I agree totally with this part.

Borg never predicted a Federer win at Roland Garros. He said that Federer 'can' win. The Nadal prediction falls in line with most people's now it seems.

Thank you CyBorg. From reading this board you would think Borg is the most evil person on the planet. So preposterous! Sampras favors Fed because they're friends (Sampras doesn't even know Nadal I think) and they have a very similar type of game so Sampras identifies with him. His opinion is neither more objective nor more "dignified" than Borg's. It's just different and logical given his affinities. I think Borg respects Fed a lot but
1- he may identify a little bit more with Nadal as Nadal seems to be closer to achieve the back to back FO/W than Fed is which is a more significant record in my opinion than just the number of FO or number of W won (Sampras has won a lot of W too but the back to back is very specific to Borg's abilities)
2- don't forget Borg was on court side for both the dramatic 5 setter in W final last year and the one sided execution of the FO final this year (+the semi Djoko-Nadal at FO). All this had to have an influence on how he evaluated the 3 players and he had to be impressed with Nadal's level (has Sampras ever even seen Nadal play live on clay or grass? I don't know for sure but I'm wondering.)
In the end, Sampras' opinion isn't more valuable than Borg's. They're both interesting and sujective and stemming from different circumstances. So trashing Borg the way some people have been doing on this board is simply unacceptable.
Finally, Borg has never predicted a Fed's FO victory (thank god for CyBorg). That's a fabrication of some people here to destroy Borg's credibility. What he said is that Fed had "a good chance". Can you hear the difference between that and saying "he will win"? Apparently you can't but I can.

Actually he did predict Fed to win FO last year and this year he said that Federer has a very good chance and that he's playing the right way before the final. But as I said he's entitled to his opinion(as I'm entitled to disagree with his opinion)and no Sampras opinion isn't more valuable than Borg but I respect the way he backed up Fed regardless considering that Roger is chasing his slam record afterall. Many experts picked Nadal to win and that's fine we'll see if they're right but I still think that Woodford was out of line saying that Fed had no bussines admiting he has mono,Fed has every right to state if he has some illness or injury as any other player.

Your contempt for Borg is absolutely despicable. As I said before the most impressive record by Borg is the number of back to back FO/W, so even if Fed wins 10 W and Rafa 10 FO, Borg will still proudly hold one of the most prestigious records in the sport' s history and you will look like a fool (except you already do anyway).

Last year a lot of people predicted a Fed's victory at FO because of the Hamburg final, so I can see where Borg was coming from. Once again I didn't agree but I didn't find his predictions shocking either. Maybe it's more fun to go with a challenger and a surprise result rather than the expected outcome (after all that's what Gilbert likes to do too). Everybody says in hindsight that they were silly but during the tournament backing up challengers adds some "spice" to things as I see it.
I agree about Woodforde, he crossed an awkward line with that particular statement.

Borg retired after being beaten at Wimbledon. and he thinks Fed will do the same. What a shame to say that. He thinks he is the greatest so everyone should follow him.

Sour loser for sure.

Defenitely a harsh sentiment of Borg for sure. I have seen a number of the interviews where he's asked about Federer's chances of repeating at Wimbledon this year and for the most part Borg is speaking on the subject if Nadal meets Federer in the final. He thinks Nadal's chances of beating Federer on grass are much better than Federer's chances of beating Nadal on clay (see the last two years between the two players at both events).

Borg has always been a class act and because he's being honest about his opinion I think people are a little too quick to jump to conclusions. If he were asked if Fed could beat Sampras' GS record I'm sure he'd say that he still has an excellent chance to match and surpass it.

To call one of the greatest players to ever grace the game of Tennis a 'sour puss' simply because he picked against your idol shows a remarkable lack of character. I'd really be hard pressed to argue against someone calling you a *******, no really!

I'm not very sure if anyone of us here, and most certainly you 1171, is qualified enough to shine Bjorn Borg's shoes! You should hang your head in shame, or better still ... stop posting until you develop some maturity!
