Some other observations/facts :

1. 1st set, both were struggling to find their first serves and it was the quality of the set wasn't that good.

2. 2nd and 3rd sets were of high quality . Courier was playing well, but Sampras always had the answers, be it with the ground game or at the net. Arguably Sampras' finest match at the AO.

3. Sampras broke once in each set.

4. Courier only had BPs in the 3rd set, at 1-2 and 3-4 , all of which Sampras saved.

5. Courier's net approaches increased as the match went on, including 14 SnV attempts.

6. At 3 all, 30-15 in the 3rd set, this stat flashed : 8 FH winners for sampras to only 3 FH winners for Courier. I had Sampras at 7 and Courier at 3 at that stage.

7. Out of Sampras' 11 FH winners, 3 were passing shots, including a return passing winner and one was a lob.

8. Out of Sampras' 5 BH winners, 4 of them were passing shots.

9. Out of Courier's 3 FH winners, 1 was a passing shot

10. Out of Courier's 2 BH winners, 1 was a passing shot.

@mattennis had a thread on this match, asked if anyone did stats on it. I think I did a while ago, but not very detailed ones. Sampras had more fh winners than Courier, interesting. One of the longest running debates here was who had the better fh.

@mattennis' thread is here:

Would be interested to see your stats on the match, even if they're not very detailed. (BTW saw your post on Pete's hold rate at '94 Wimby likely being the 2nd highest. Grazie for that.)

Speaking of which... @abmk you forgot the most important stat of 'em all! I want a breakdown of their unreturned serves by 1st/2nd serve and by set goddammit!!! :mad: (j/k of course. Thanks for posting.)

@NonP :I tried it for a set and a bit, but it was messing with me taking down the other stats correctly. So ditched it. Would need to watch a match twice if you have to get all the stats correctly.

Sampras' FH was better in this match, but not by too much and certainly not as much as the W/UE stats show. Courier forced quite a few errors from Sampras with his FH and set up quite a few winning approach shots with it. (More than the other way around)

I see what you mean. I tried to do the same several times myself and found it virtually impossible to focus on everything in one go. And much as I like tennis I just don't feel like watching the same match over and over. :D

BTW I'm guessing you used this YT video, which looks even better than the AO Vault one. But the Vault is still a valuable (not to mention official and free!) repository of past AO matches. Check it out if you can't find what you're looking for.

I had seen the Vault a long time ago, but not watched much on it. Was reminded of it when you referenced it in one of your recent posts :D

and yes, I used the YT video.

@NonP
Here's what I have - 26 unreturned serves for Sampras(inc 10 aces)
I don't know the total amount of pts served.
16 unreturned serves for Courier(inc 3 aces)

I think this is Sampras' best slow hard match ever and one of his best matches ever. He was crazy good. Was moving ridiculously well. Sampras peak on slow hard from 93-95 was excellent. He could take on anyone.

His movement/athleticism is extremely underrated.

Hey Moose, belated thanks for this. When I have time I'll see if I can get the point breakdown myself... unless @abmk can help a bro out. :D

Do you think his 1997 run ranks below 93-95? I'd probably place it second to 1994 - above 1993 and 1995. But yes, despite only having '2' AO's Sampras at his best on slow HC is up there with the very best.

The disparity stands out here in these statistics.

yeah he was great in 97 AO...of course he didn't face the greatest field but still many dominant baseline performances against decent baseliners.
