Sampras is not offended that Federer broke his record

In fact he finds Fed a bit of a "kindred spirit", a guy who respects the traditions of the game like does and also he likes that for Roger Wimbledon is #1. I think he like everyone else was astonished that someone could come along and break his record in less then 7 years.

i don't think so.
he may say so in public but in his mind he doesn't like it.

how can you like it if you are (or were) once a competitive player ?

That's true. And it's not fun for him being address the same question over and over about Fed breaking his record or the greatest of all time.

I think anyone who breaks a record would expect it to be broken at some point but in Samprases case he would have maybe expected his record to last longer then it did.

I believe that Sampras knew someday, someone would break his record.

I just don't think he expected it to come so soon.. maybe he was expecting at least 15-20years of being in the record books.

That being said, appearently he is content with the fact that if anyone was going to break his record, Federer would be the one. Someone who respects the history and tradition of the game.

Offended?

Perhaps dismayed, disappointed, saddened, or the like would be more appropriate.

Is it because the OP doesn't have English as his/her first language?

If Sampras knew someone will break his record in 2009, I don't think he would of retire in 2002.

Yes, I would agree. I never understood why did he retired... I thought he would go a long way with Andre and then retire...

One day, Roger Federer's record will be broken, but I doubt it will be in 7 years like Roger did to Pete's. And then that person will be declared "THE GOAT" and the debate rages on...

Very scary to Imagine, just how people jump the gun with the GOAT title. Maybe no one is GOAT or all is GOATs!

Sampras retired too early, he could have played for at least another 3 years. What a pity Federer and Sampras couldn't have played more matches against each other, that may have turned into an interesting rivalry. Physically Sampras was fine but mentally he had enough and decided to hang it up.

Sampras was in no way offended that Federer surpassed his grand slam total, he was humbled, not offended.

Sampras would have won 1-2 more Slams, then again, we'll never know because the entire field has never seen a 2nd serve like Pete's or volleys like Pete either....

Would you simmer? Pete is a great player, but he wasn't dominating the field before retirement (I know he won the US open, but before that he wasn't doing much of anything for a while). In all likelihood, that is what he'd continue to do until he retired. I can't really see how you'd debate that. Grand slams would be unlucky past when he retired. In my opinion, he couldn't adapt to a life of mediocrity, and so he retired.

Serving and volleying isn't magic. If it were still so effective, more academies would teach it, and there would be more professional SVers.

Wouldn't have mattered, I doubt he would have won any more majors. His only chance would have been AO 2003 and he hadn't won there since 1998.

Seriously 2 slams?! Which one would it have been? AO, maybe but I'd still give Safin an edge over him, no chance at the French or Wimbledon, and that only leaves the US Open. Roddick played great there and I think he would have beaten Pete.

Pete, was too far past his prime to win any more majors.

He's not offended because he knows he's better, he beat prime Federer 5 years after he retired.

not entirely cotrrect. he had some issues. he was beat down pretty much by 2002. Unlike Agassi, everything in his life revolved around tennis. But his menatl edge was also gone by 02 (even though he won the USO..shows why he is GOAT).

Nope, Sampras isn't the GOAT. He himself admits that.

whatever. he has noted several times he would beat Fed at Wimbledon and no reason to think he would also beat him at the USO. it has already been printed (many times) that Pete questions Fed status as GOAT since Nadal owns him..how can he be GOAT when another player in his era has beaten him in 5 major finals..sorry, not GOAT.

I think a lot of has to do with Pete trying to be gracious to Federer. I'm not sure if you asked Sampras if he thought would beat Federer most of the time if they played on various surfaces that he wouldn't say "yes" assuming he was forced to tell the absolute truth.

What do you think he is going to say "Im offended by my record being broken". Of course he wishes his record would stand and never be broken. Petes a class act.

Lol like Sampras saying he could have beat Fed at Wimby actually means anything. We'll never know who would have won if both played during their primes.

"Regardless if he[Federer] won there[Roland Garros] or not, he goes down as the greatest ever. This just confirms it." -Pete Sampras

Can't get much clearer than this. Sampras thinks that even if Federer had never won the French, he would be the greatest anyway. Since Fed DID win the French, Sampras is even more convinced that Fed is the GOAT. He has said multiple times that Fed is the GOAT, a simple google search will confirm this.

I'm not even saying whether or not I think Fed's the GOAT. I'm just saying that SAMPRAS thinks Fed is the GOAT. Sampras himself is NOT the GOAT.

Give Sampras a call and argue with him:)

Pete's chief rival was a crackhead, clown era.

If Federer is not GOAT because 1 player owns him, then Sampras is certainly not GOAT since an entire surface (clay) owns him.

Pete had over a 70% winning on clay at the same stage as Federer. You cannot compare a surface to a person anyway. your arguement is illogical. mine is a fact. no one can be considered goat if another person in their era owned them..defeats the purpose.

Don't waste your time, he's just p'ssing the so called "*******s"...

don't forget, Nadal makes Fed cry like a little whiny baby. makes him look like a little boy that got no presents for Xmas. It is well documented that Fed plays scared against Nadal. shame really, I want Fed to be GOAT. I am an Agassi fan.

I'm not saying that Roger is the greatest sport of all time but he is the best that we've seen in far of domination. He has a far better winning percentages than Pete, more majors than Pete and also a career grand slam. He's got Pete, beat in every category except for the rival one and to be fair, if Pete was playing Nadal, with today's conditions, I doubt he'd do any better against him.

For the time being Roger Federer is the GOAT, there's really just no way around it.

Federer has a problem with one player, that's true. Nevertheless, his weakness is less crippling for his GOAT prospects than Sampras's is. Federer at least owns the rest of the field, and is able to prove it by consistently making major finals. Sampras, on the other hand, was almost never a threat to win big titles for a full 1/3 of the tennis season. Personally, I think someone in contention for GOAT should show great skill on ALL tennis surfaces. Don't forget, it's not some random loser that Federer is losing to. Nadal by the end of his career will almost certainly be considered a greater player than Sampras's main rival, Agassi.

Actually, it would be more than 1/3 of the season, since there are much fewer grass court tournies than on hard or clay.

Sampras isn't offended, he just loathes Federer for breaking his record. Anyone who now quotes passages from his book about how nice he is and was pulling for Fed to do it, is truly naive, stupid and a ******** Samptard,

I’m sure Sampras is well aware that he lost to many weaker players at the slam than Roger, and knows darn well Roger only lost to potential goat on clay(rafa) at RG.
