Hard to tell, for me at least, as I never got to see Pete during his career. But from the matches and highlights that I've seen he's definitely up there with the best. Pete's seems, like the rest of his game, like a more aggressive shot on average whereas Rafa's is just very strong and near impossible to break down. Overall maybe they're about equal?

That highlights reel of Sampras?

He missed 3 or 4 for every one he made. Even people who watched him in real time forget that!... and for those who didn't, it's come to take on a mythical quality

Reality is what I said - he usually missed

Nadal's running forehand far more consistent, much better percentage. Sampras deadlier though... much like their non-running forehands, which is probably logical enough

Dangerous as Sampras' forehand was, it's a pretty big stretch to say it's better than Nadal's

Same thing with the running version

True that, but that mainly comes from racket evolution, bigger frames, poly strings give you far better control and far better defensive skills. So, as often when comparing players, it's a stupid debate.

True, true. Ultimately, all inter-generation comparisons are futile

But it's fun:)

In this particular case, we can at least get to each players mentality on the shot, which is sufficiently different as to have made the comparison difficult even with same racquets

Assuming Sampras with a modern racquet would be facing a correspondingly heavier down the line backhand... I speculate that'd cancel out the greater power and control he'd get and his running forehand would work about the same

Nadal with Sampras' era racquet. .. that's harder to call

Lol...Is Nadal vs Sampras the new theme for TTW topics today?

Anyways, this is easy....Nadal by a margin

Unfair comparison. Nadal had the advantage of polyester strings and 100 sq.in. racquet. Makes it much easier to hook it back into the court.

As i recall, majority of Sampras' running forehands were cross courts while Rafa's are down the line.
Technically Sampras' cross court running forehands are tad safer therefore.

Sampras basically stopped going for extreme running forehands after his injury, herniated disc in 1999.

Sampras hit it flatter sharp angle. Rafa's more topspin, hook back into the courts.

Both of them are extremely atheletic, 100% jocky.

Remember, Sampras hit with a full bed of natural gut. It's much harder to hit a running forehand, which needs a lot of topspin to be able to pass the opponent with pace yet still dip down to stay inside the lines, when you are using natural gut as well as a heavy small headed racquet. Nadal's usage of poly strings, and a spinny one at that, plus a light big headed racquet makes it much easier to hit a good running forehand. So comparing Sampras and Nadal's running forehand is comparing apples to oranges.

Not just that, the courts are a lot slower nowadays and most of Nadal's running forehands are on clay as well.

non gut strings and 100 sq inch racquets didn't exist in the 1990's, everybody used full gut and exactly 85 sq inch and anything over that was banned banned banned.
