Hehe...perhaps Tsitsipas would become a snowboarder and quit tennis.Pete will make Tsits re-examine his life. 6 hour youtube documentary to follow. ''My thoughts as Pete reached in and crushed my soul.''
What would average Sampras do on clay?On any surface from medium to fast - lol Sampras would crush him
On clay peak Sampras would win, 1997-2002 Sampras would be pwned
I feel like Sampras is underrated on clay, he won a Masters, reached 3 FO QF and one SF, beat multiple FO champions at the FO, beat Agassi multiple times.
What's an average Sampras? What would average Sampras do on clay?
Tsitsipas.
The gap in the level of play between now and 25 years ago is too substantial, despite Pete being better relative to his era.
good inspirational coffee-mug philosophy quote battle in the makings therehow about Sysyphus vs Tsitsipas?

Sorry....I don't buy this. I believe the level of play (all aspects) actually went backward post Roddick and outside of the big 3. Slowed down courts creates the illusion of these "great rallies". The big 3 could be seen as a sort of Sampras kicking the butts of next gens x2 who we STILL doubt to win a grand slam. People are blind if they cannot realise how the depth of field and lack of talent has been in recent years. It's only more recently that there seems to have been a tinkling of progress and that this patheticness is starting to change toward a glimmer of hope. Someone talented as Kyrgios sums up the general problems we see to this day, lack of maturity, professionalism and mental toughness. It's as if these young players are maturing much much later.Tsitsipas.

What's an average Sampras?
The thing is his level dropped significantly after 1996 with a press of a button (serve-and-volley galore button).
If they played on current courts, Sampras would think they are playing on clay. If they played on the courts from the 90's, it would be over before Tsits realized that courts used to be fast.
Tsitsipas has a slightly better backhand but that's about it.
That's one of the greatest tennis matches I've ever seen, but that highlights package is terrible as it doesn't include many of the best points.
Better to watch the whole thing:
Every tennis fan should watch this match. This should be considered essential viewing.
Millennials can’t handle fast courts! If they played on current courts, Sampras would think they are playing on clay. If they played on the courts from the 90's, it would be over before Tsits realized that courts used to be fast.
Restrict the question to people who actually were alive and watched Sampras instead of listening to those who have no clue who he was or how he played.Would the current top game of Tsitsipas dent Sampras (any time he played) in any way? Both being single handed backhands also makes it interesting.
Sampras backhand was not technically sound either. It was an awkward shot and he seemed off balance when he hit it, much like Tsitsipas sometimes. Sampras BH was quite ordinary especially compared to the rest of his game. But then again, he didn't really need a great backhand, and he had an effective slice anyway.I don't agree with you there. Stef's backhand lacks variety and isn't technically as sound as the Sampras backhand was. Of the current one handers on tour, he's way down the list.
I'm wondering what people think as to how each player would have matched up against each other.

He wasn't terrible on clay but I wouldn't pick him over Tsitsipas. On any surface from medium to fast - lol Sampras would crush him

Believe me, I agree. It's just interesting to see when people are delusional with recency bias. How is this even a question? Tsitsipas is not even a force in his own era, while Sampras was one of the most impactful players in the sport's history--and I'm talking about his ability, not trophies. Tsitsipas would be nothing more than a practice partner left wondering how Sampras has so much control at that "thing" that separates the two sides of the court.
A little? Or a lot?Sampras had similar strengths to Tsitsipas, but much stronger - serve, net game, and forehand. Tsitsipas has a slightly better backhand but that's about it.
Sorry, Stef needs to improve a little more if he wants to be that level.
Just a little because Sampras was a CRAPOLA MUG ROFLMAOA little? Or a lot?
