Sampras vs Tsitsipas

I'm wondering what people think as to how each player would have matched up against each other.

Would the current top game of Tsitsipas dent Sampras (any time he played) in any way? Both being single handed backhands also makes it interesting.

ROFL! Aristotle Jesus would have had that MUG begging for mercy before they even stepped foot on the court! The only way PETE takes a set is if he got a double dosage of PEDs! Nuff said NO EXCUSES!!!

On any surface from medium to fast - lol Sampras would crush him
On clay peak Sampras would win, 1997-2002 Sampras would be pwned

I feel like Sampras is underrated on clay, he won a Masters, reached 3 FO QF and one SF, beat multiple FO champions at the FO, beat Agassi multiple times.
What would average Sampras do on clay?

What's an average Sampras?

The thing is his level dropped significantly after 1996 with a press of a button (serve-and-volley galore button). As I said 1991-1996 Samras would probably beat Tsitsipas on clay, 1997-2002 was losing to players from outside the top 50 on a regular basis so Tsitsipas would smack him. Not that that would be accomplishment.

Tsitsipas.

The gap in the level of play between now and 25 years ago is too substantial, despite Pete being better relative to his era.

Sorry....I don't buy this. I believe the level of play (all aspects) actually went backward post Roddick and outside of the big 3. Slowed down courts creates the illusion of these "great rallies". The big 3 could be seen as a sort of Sampras kicking the butts of next gens x2 who we STILL doubt to win a grand slam. People are blind if they cannot realise how the depth of field and lack of talent has been in recent years. It's only more recently that there seems to have been a tinkling of progress and that this patheticness is starting to change toward a glimmer of hope. Someone talented as Kyrgios sums up the general problems we see to this day, lack of maturity, professionalism and mental toughness. It's as if these young players are maturing much much later.

I like Kyrgios, even though he dissappoints at many levels.

Peak Sampras would demolish Tsitsipas if they had to use similar rackets. Sampras and Boris Becker are two of the most compete players that I have ever seen. They could wreck you from the baseline, or by serving and volleying. They both served bombs in the mid 130s with garbage rackets. Pete with his serve alone would cause trouble for Tsitsipas.
The only way it would be interesting is if we handicap Sampras with a his old garbage 85 inch Wilson racket, or move them both to clay. Likewise for Becker vs Tsitsipas too.

Here are some highlights of Sampras and Becker. Both were far more entertaining to watch than anybody today.

That's one of the greatest tennis matches I've ever seen, but that highlights package is terrible as it doesn't include many of the best points.

Better to watch the whole thing:

Sampras had similar strengths to Tsitsipas, but much stronger - serve, net game, and forehand. Tsitsipas has a slightly better backhand but that's about it.
Sorry, Stef needs to improve a little more if he wants to be that level.

I don't agree with you there. Stef's backhand lacks variety and isn't technically as sound as the Sampras backhand was. Of the current one handers on tour, he's way down the list.

Every tennis fan should watch this match. This should be considered essential viewing.

Restrict the question to people who actually were alive and watched Sampras instead of listening to those who have no clue who he was or how he played.

Sampras is 100 times the player Tsistipas could ever be or ever dream to be. His mental strength is about 200 times what Tsitsipas can only dream about while posting to his Twitter account in the middle of the night. I hated Sampras with a visceral passion but comparing him to Tsits is like comparing Nadal to Tim Mayotte.

Sampras backhand was not technically sound either. It was an awkward shot and he seemed off balance when he hit it, much like Tsitsipas sometimes. Sampras BH was quite ordinary especially compared to the rest of his game. But then again, he didn't really need a great backhand, and he had an effective slice anyway.

Sampras would murder him. Mentally. Stef would be mentally broken for the rest of his career if he faced Sampras in a high-stakes match. Sampras would absolutely smother him on serve.

He wasn't terrible on clay but I wouldn't pick him over Tsitsipas.

How is this even a question? Tsitsipas is not even a force in his own era, while Sampras was one of the most impactful players in the sport's history--and I'm talking about his ability, not trophies. Tsitsipas would be nothing more than a practice partner left wondering how Sampras has so much control at that "thing" that separates the two sides of the court.

Believe me, I agree. It's just interesting to see when people are delusional with recency bias.
