San diego tennis clubs

Anyone here a member of or been to any of the clubs around the San Diego area, could you tell me a bit about them? Can i walk in and get a pick up match, is it worth it being a member?

Right now im looking for a place i can go during the day and play tennis with random 4.0+ players all day long.

Barnes Tennis Center near Mission Bay is also good, and cheap. 20 hard courts and 4 clay. $6 to $10 for 4 to 8 hours!

I went to college at UCSD and lived there for a while after. It's been over a decade since I moved back to SF, so my info may be a bit outdated...

The Balboa tennis club at Morley field has got to be one of the best public facilities in the United States. The courts are maintained very well, there are lights, and the fees are remarkably low ($5/day for a "membership" and low court fees, though they may have gone up in the past 10 years). One of the best things about this club is the doubles challenge courts. The "advanced" doubles challenge court here is a really reliable way to find a quality match. On the weekend, you really can show up, alone with your rackets, and have a very high probability of spending the day playing 4.0+ level tennis (and not just low 4.0 - plenty of the players on the advanced challenge courts are 4.5+). BTW, don't worry if you aren't at that level - there's also a second court that is probably 3.0-4.0 that is also very well attended.

If you're north county, the La Jolla public courts are also a good bet. Again, there are plenty of 4.5+ players who hang out here. It isn't quite as easy to get a match as it is at Morley (Balboa), but definitely worth a look.

Beyond that... well, I've always enjoyed playing at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, though it's $$$ enough that I rarely do this anymore. Pretty excellent if you have the scratch, though. You get access as a hotel guest, but you can also join as a member if you have something like $60K to spend and a few years for the waiting list. No worries ;)

There's also a semi-private club in pacific beach with clay courts. I've heard good things about it, but never played there.

Anyway, as a 4.0, your best bet is Balboa tennis club. All you really need to do is show up with your rackets, and you'll get to play. Good luck! I envy you, San Diego is an incredibly good place to be a tennis player.

San Diego is so spoiled with how good they have it with their tennis facilities. To put things in perspective, a standard high school tennis court at a generic public school rivals that of a >hardcourt< kept with private money at any location in New York. Some of the courts in Mt Carmel High School are really impressive (yes, school of adam lambert).

But I would say, try Mt. Carmel, Miramar College, UCSD. There's also a really nice tennis club that you need to pay $400/year around Penasquitos Canyon Reserve. It's lit and they have a lot of people there.

I tried going to balboa tennis club about a week ago. For 6bux you get 6 hours on the challenge court. I played doubles all day it was alot of fun. I will go again probably.

Its pretty nice in that you have a nice club plenty of people hanging out watching tennis and its really cheap. Cool place.

How is Balboa if you are looking to get matched up for single tennis (instead of doubles)?

I'm about a 3.5 level and seriously want to improve this year. Thinking about joining soon..

Gosh not sure, i've only ever tried the challenge court there. I dont know how old you are but one thing is for sure the challenge court is infested with older folks, part of the reason I dont go only as last resort (Im younger). The place is always packed though and if you had a membership I think you would find some good players as there is certainly an abundance of tennis palyers in SD.

If I knew how to find partners there Id probably go alot more. One thing I really liked about the place is all the people there, expecially on the weekends. No matter what court your on there is people hanging out and watching which makes for a great atmosphere.

Having ranted on for a little bit, please do post back if you find out anymore information id be interested in knowing how to find singles partners my age and level to play there.

San Diego is a great tennis city. The Barnes is great and courts are always available. I also like the Hilton by Fiesta Island as they have some nice courts by the water.
