Sanchez Vicario overrated?

As much as I admire her fighting heart I find Sanchez Vicario is quite an overrated player when people look back and evaluate her greatness and standard as a player. As a 4 slam winner who reached #1 in the World and was in so many slam finals she is evaluated that way. However her 4 slams was almost certainly based on the Monica Seles stabbing, as she won 3 of her 4 slams after this incident and her lifetime head to head with Monica is complete one sided domination in Monica's favor, even in the post stabbing years. I actually dont think Monica was certain to win any of the 94 French, 94 U.S Open, or 98 French Opens. The thing is at each of those events though Sanchez Vicario avoided everyone she had to avoid to have a good shot, and with Seles there or things being different the draw just has to change a bit for Sanchez to lose at any of those. Lets go through each:

94 French Open- Pierce and Graf both on the other side. This sort of was made possible by Sanchez Vicario's #2 seed, a seed she never would have had at this point had the Seles stabbing never occured. Graf is always odds on favorite vs Sanchez Vicario, despite that Sanchez actually was a tough challenger or Graf and more of a threat to her than she was to Seles. Pierce was untouchable until the final. She likely loses to either one before the final. Pierce in the final was not the same thing, it was her first slam final and a long rain delay also threw her off. Sanchez Vicario also had an especialy easy draw, the only seed she played was Conchita Martinez who was in her second ever slam semi and played horribly. Had Seles been there atleast 1 of Pierce, Graf, or Seles would have to be in her half, maybe even 2. That is already enough that she is very unlikely to win.

94 U.S Open- Again with Seles out and Sanchez thus able to be the #2 seed which she wouldnt have ever had at this point otherwise. Like the French the draw pans out perfectly for her. The Worlds more dangerous fast court players- Graf, Novotna, and Pierce, all end up in the other half. Sanchez Vicario ends up in a half with a past her prime Sabatini, Date, and Martinez. The new Wimbledon Champion Martinez is her only real threat before the final, and Martinez ends up crashing out early in a big upset, giving Sanchez a free ride to the final, easily beating Date and Sabatini. Had she played Graf before the final (before Graf's back went out) she almost certainly loses, and Pierce or Novotna both had a decent shot of beating her as well. Sanchez's luck could be contrasted to some of these women. Pierce ends up drawing Novotna her biggest career nemisis (Pierce didnt get a set in 6 meetings I think) and Jana puts her out easily, then Jana plays her own biggest career nemisis Steffi Graf in the semis and despite pushing her some goes in 2. Then in the final Graf dominates the first half, but then her back goes out halfway through, this allows Sanchez back into the match and she ends up just pulling it out over an injured Graf in visibile pain. Add Seles to the draw and now #3 seed Sanchez already has to likely play one of Graf or Seles before the final and almost certainly loses on these fast courts. Pierce, Novotna, or even Martinez are all threats to now take her out should they play her under the reformated draw to.

1998 French Open- Again things worked out just perfectly for Sanchez Vicario it seemed. Hingis, Seles, Novotna (who had given her all kinds of problems even on clay in 97 and 98), Venus who had beaten her in Rome, and Kournikova who had beaten her 3 times in a row and twice on clay that year actually, all in the other half. Then in Sanchez Vicario's half her biggest threats to making the final were Mary Pierce and Conchita Martinez. Of course Pierce and Martinez both end up going out before they get to her though. Coetzer and defending Champion Majoli also lose before facing Aranxta. She ends up getting a 16 year old Serena on clay in the round of 16, and actually plays a horrible match and nearly loses to teenage Serena on clay but barely survives. Then she plays a so so match vs Patty Schnyder who was her biggest threat left after the upsets, and who had crushed Sanchez Vicario twice on clay that spring, but Patty folds under the pressure of such a big match and Sanchez goes through in 3. Then in the semis she plays Davenport who had been whining about playing on clay all event and basically tanked their semifinal, and Sanchez goes through in 2. Then in the final she plays Seles who owns her but was emotionally and physically drained
after huge wins over Novotna and Hingis, and the emotion of whole effort so soon after her father's passing, and Sanchez scrapes through in 3 sets to win. Had she played Seles in any other round than the the final she loses, or had she played Hingis she for sure loses.

Without the Seles stabbing I am certain that Sanchez Vicario would have won only 1 or 2 slams at most. She had 1 already at that point, and she possibly never wins another one or maybe just one. She also certainly doesnt end up reaching 12 slam finals or getting to play all those classic finals vs Graf. That is another aspect of how she has become overrated through the Seles stabbing. People actually look at all those slam finals she lost, some of them very close, and think she was unlucky to not even win more than 4 slams. Without the Seles stabbing she reaches nowhere near that number of slam finals in the first place, and some of her classic finals vs Graf are probably replaced by a Graf-Seles or Graf-someone else (pending the draw) final.

And the other aspect of all this is her quite impressive challenge to Graf makes her seem greater than she actualy is. The thing is she is just a bad matchup for Graf. You know how in tennis there are often bad matchups, and that causes certain players to do better vs another player than expected. This is the case with Sanchez Vicario and Graf. The gap between them is much more enormous than the gap in their actual matches and overall rivalry, it is the matchup aspect that makes it more competitive. Yet even with Sanchez being such a horrible matchup for Graf, Graf still has the decisive overall edge in their head to head. When one looks at Sanchez Vicario's history vs Seles, Hingis, or even an aging Navratilova, great players who Sanchez is not a bad matchup for the way she is for Graf, I think we get a more accurate reflection of her true abilities. Also her head to heads vs 1 slam winners Sabatini and Novotna, both who have a narrow winning head to head with Aranxta.

She was most fortunate to be in a situation where the Seles stabbing occured, and other key players fell off as well before new ones arrived, and the game found itself in a period of very low depth in womens tennis where Sanchez Vicario became the clear #2 player in the World. Just because her in the rankings were the headcase brigade of Martinez, Novotna, and Pierce, none who were consistent enough to be ranked that high even in a relatively empty. So a very weak field where the only player truly better than her happened to be someone she was a very bad matchup for inflating how impressive she looked.

One other thing is to contrast her situation to someone like Sabatini who got far less lucky. Sanchez's best ever tennis was 1992-1996, most of that after the Seles stabbing incident, thus she was able to fully capatilize on this weak period before the new gaurd raised the level of womens tennis again. Sabatini though played her best ever tennis from 1987-1992. The problem of this was what was around her. Graf of course, Seles, Navratilova still a major force and near her best. Because of the exceptional competition Sabatini faced during her prime years she was only able to win 1 slam despite making 18 slam semis, and winning so many tier 1 titles. Sanchez Vicario was already quite good from 89-92 I should add but was always ranked below Sabatini during this time, though both managed 1 slam win. By the time the field began to weaken with not only the Seles stabbing, but Sabatini's own decline, Navratilova's at last falling well off in level and soon retiring, and even lesser threats like Capriati and Fernandez either fading off tour or struggling constantly with injuries, Sabatini was finding her own play and game declining at that point and was not able to capatilize on the now weaker field. If Sabatini had her prime from 93-97 instead or Sanchez from 88-92 instead their careers would look totally different I imagine.

I actually think in terms of tennis talent she is far below Pierce, Sabatini, Novotna, even her countrywomen Conchita Martinez probably. The reason she achieved far more than those and was probably the better player (in addition to her luck and being the biggest capatilizer of the Seles stabbing), is her mental strength, fighting spirit, heart, sheer determination, and understanding how to get the most out of her limited game vs those others I mentioned who didnt know how to properly utilize all their weapons and different shots to their fullest. Her actual game is not really better than any of those players. It is her mental strength and ability to compete that makes the difference in her career vs those players. That is obvious when you watch her play matches vs Novotna, Martinez, Pierce, and to a lesser degree even Sabatini, and you can see how much the mental superiority and extra determination she has compared to those players is her real edge, not really superior weapons or overall game.

I think you are right .. she was the most boring payer i have seen . So yes i am biased and i know it. But she really was only looking to have her opponent miss . thats all. That IMO is not tennis. I know other may disagee and thats fine.

she had basically two weapons. That incredible footspeed ( so good that worked as an offensive weapon) and a a fine backhand. We can't forget an adventurous spirit and a great forecourt game. Those doubles titles attest to a better volley that almost any player of her era excepting Novatna. If only her forehand was as reliable and penetrating as her backhand.

And you are so good you just hit winners all the time? What ranking did you reach on the WTA tour?

She did produce quite good volleys from her doubles experiences, but I personally dont think she was the 2nd best volleyer of that era at all. Zvereva, Hingis, Tauziat, Gigi Fernandez, Neiland, Sabatini, Garrison, aging Navratilova, even Graf when she wanted to come in enough, were all superior volleyers IMO. If she played today she would probably be one of the 3 best volleyers probably, since that part of the game has gone fairly extinct, even more non existent than the 90s which was already a heavily baseline oriented womens game.

This is what Sanchez Vicario looks like when she plays a big hitter who doesnt miss:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PST8cU_Kwbg

Her playing style is too defensive, she is too reliant on the other top players missing, and that forehand is a joke for any multi slam winner even if it isnt their best shot.

Oh big whoop you showed her against two of the greatest players ever. Whoever put her on that tier? She beat Steffi at the '89 French whic would have given Graf a second consecutive grand slam so she could occasionally get the job done. BTW Graf was gracious in defeat that day and offered no excuses (that I can recall - saw it live 20 years ago) I wonder how many this board will make up for her.

It wasnt just that she got spanked but as you can see watching her play Graf and Seles in those matches her shots are easy for the big hitters at the top to hit. Those forehands are mostly big loopers just easy to take on the rise and put away if you are a top player. That is why if she plays Graf or Seles and they are really in the zone she often gets only a handful of games or less, it isnt like a once in awhile sort of thing.

As mentioned earlier she has losing head to heads vs Novotna and Sabatini, two 1 slam only winners she played over 20 times in her career. You dont think that is a telling stat. She also has a embarassingly bad 2-18 head to head with someone like Hingis, who only has 1 more slam than Sanchez and ended up being chased out of the game at only 21 herself by all the big hitters.

It is too bad there arent more clips posted but Sanchez Vicario was blasted off the court in 50 minutes or less by Pierce a number of times on "good" Mary days. Mary Pierce is another player she has played over 10 times and has a losing head to head with BTW. Even a very fat Davenport nowhere near her 98 level blew her off the court with her power game when she was on in the Olympic final in 96.

When you compare her ability to other players to win 4 slams she is really one of the biggest
overachievers ever.

You are also one of the biggest preachers in other threads of the Seles stabbing effect so I dont see how you would argue Sanchez Vicario didnt benefit greatly from the Seles stabbing if you think Graf did so much. After all Sanchez was about 10 times more incapable of beating a prime Seles than Graf, heck she lost almost every match to Seles even after the stabbing too. Graf also won half of her slams after the Seles stabbing (atleast some which she was going to win anyway) but Sanchez Vicario won three-quarters of hers, and the difference between a 4 slam winner and potentially a 1 slam winner (which she might have ended up being) are night and day. You go from being in the same sentence as Mandlikova to being in the same sentence as Martinez.

Her 89 French Open victory was her most impressive win ever by far.

As always with "overrated" and "underrated" questions, I have to ask, "what's the starting point?" What is ASV's "rating" that we're trying to judge.

I agree she was boring. I agree that some of her Slams were opportunistic (as are a few of the Slams of every champion). I agree she didn't have a huge aresenal of weapons.

She won 4 Slams, won a a lot of tourneys, beat all the great players of her era (even if she did have miserable records against Graf and Seles), and won doubles Slams.

I don't see her at all as overrated. Since she has retried, how has ASV been considered when talked about by commentators, by fans, etc.? Well, virtually no one puts her on par with the greats of her era or any other era. I've never heard anyone say that she was a player who could have achieved more. In fact, and this thread is an example, I've heard multiple times that she should have achieved less. Her memory isn't showered with references to insane "talent." I don't see any level of enthusiasm for ASV's legacy among the tennis community that is out of line with what she accomplished.

Who's thunder is ASV stealing when it comes to talking about tennis history? Who is ASV being elevated above that would warrant an "overrated" tag? She's been compared on TW to Mandlikova simply because of the fact that they both have 4 Slams. While some people argued that ASV had the better career, that opinion was far from universal. There is no overriding belief by the majority that ASV was better than Mandlikova.

In fact, even though she has more Slams, there is no universal belief that ASV is even considerably better than players such as Davenport, Capriati, and Pierce -- who all had the game to pull a Seles on her and simply destroy her by overpowering her. (Pierce actually did this at the 1995 AO. Off the top of my head I can't remember if the others actually ever beat down ASV in a match.]

When TW posters want to make lists of the best players or simply ask what range a player should be placed on a list of "best" players, ASV has virtually no chance of being overrated, like for instance Safin, who many people would elevate in their rankings due to his talent, overlooking his lack of concrete achievement compared to others.

I'm just not buying it. Someone like Safin or Nalbandian, who many people actually gush over in regards to how great they are, are the types of players who can be overrated.

I've never heard any serious tennis commentator or fan talk about ASV and her career as anyting but what it was - a determined player with insane defensive skills and foot speed, and the ability to mix things up and frustrate opponents, but with no huge weapons, wins 4 Slams due to a combination of the aforementioned, as well as few opportunistic breaks. In fact, I've even heard several commentators suggest that if Seles wasn't out in 1994, no way ASV wins the FO and USO. The whole idea that she tacked on a few more Slams because of a rare opportunity to avoid the Graf-Seles duo has been addressed -- multiple times.

So, in sum, I just don't get that there's any concrete overriding view of ASV among tennis commentators and fans that would warrant an "overrated" label.

Excellent post. I guess a few things I would like to say though are:

1. I DEFINITELY rate Sanchez Vicario above Capriati. I consider Capriati an even luckier and more overrated player than Sanchez Vicario. I also think Sanchez would win more meetings with both in their mutual primes.

2. I consider Davenport a superior player to Sanchez Vicario even with 1 fewer slam. The only surface Sanchez Vicario is better on is clay, though it is a huge difference in Sanchez Vicario's favor there. Davenport was as unlucky to only win 3 slams as Sanchez was lucky to win 4 as well.

3. I agree with you on Pierce imparticular. On a good day she could blow Sanchez away on any surface, even clay. However Sanchez Vicario is far more consistent, far more mentally tough, and had the better overall career and I acknowledge that. It is also possible Pierce might have won only 1 slam without the stabbing for all we know (she still wins the 2000 FO for sure). So I would rate Sanchez over here= even though I consider Pierce the better player when at her best.

So of those 4 for me. Davenport > Sanchez Vicario > Pierce >>> Capriati

4. I believe comparing Sanchez Vicario to Mandlikova is an insult to Hana. Hana won 1 of her 4 slams in a weak watered down Aussie, but won her other 3 by beating either 1 or both of Martina or Chris. She beat Martina or Chris in other slams on the way to losing to the other one in finals. Saying they are compared since they each won 4 slams is what I mean by feeling she is overrated. To me they are not the same class of player at all even though they have 4 slams each. It is all the things I mentioned that allowed Sanchez Vicario to somehow have the same # of slams and look good enough to be debated vs a clearly superior player like Hana.

5. I actually believe even someone like 1 slam winner Sabatini might well have been as good or better a player as 4 slam winner Sanchez Vicario in reality. I am not even talking about just talent or potential where I think everyone concedes Sabatini was better, in fact I think Novotna, Pierce, even Conchita Martinez all had more talent and potential than Sanchez Vicario but all are at fault for not fulfilling more of it. I am saying based on the player Sabatini actually was from 87-92 even with her underachieving and mental frailty, she was as good or better than Sanchez Vicario from 92-98, or overall considering their whole careers. Sabatini was just very unlucky with her timing, and Sanchez Vicario was far luckier with hers. I dont think if they peaked at the exact same time Sanchez would have achieved more than Sabatini, perhaps even less. Of course that is an uncontentional way to think so I dont expect most to see it that way, but it is also place where my feeling of how overrated something like Sanchez Vicario's count of 4 slams makes her vs her true abilities come from.

"She won 4 Slams, won a lot of tourneys."

I had always thought Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario won a lot of singles titles, but according to the WTA website she won a total of 29 singles titles over a period of 14 or so years. That's about two singles titles a year. I imagine she was runner-up at least the same number of times.

Maybe I just rolled in off the farm, but 4 singles Slams are tough to argue with. She was the preeminent clay court specialist of her era, who also managed to bang out a - ahem - US Open during her career year. No one is even trying to put her in Graf's or Seles's category. For what she was, an absolute grinder with a winning spirit, she overachieved and I for one cannot view her as overrated.

I don't think Sanchez Vicario is overrated at all. She's not on the level of Seles and Graf in terms of her career, but that's because her game wouldn't always have the necessary consistency. I think anyone calling Sanchez Vicario "boring" must be crazy.

Seles leads Sanchez Vicario 20-3 in their head-to-head, but virtually every match they had was one hell of a fight, even if the scoreline didn't reflect it.

Very good post, it deserves to be fully quoted. You play who is there, when you win you win. Her fighting spirit can only be admired compared to the current WTA. She made the most of what she had to offer, whereas Graf and Seles could have been even more great if they extended their repetoire. For all the beauty as a person and beautiful game Sabatini was blessed with, she delivered poorly in comparison to Arantxa. I didn't like watching her play, but to say she is overrated is belittling her work ethic and passion for the game.

3-20 is what it is, regardless if some of the matches were entertaining. That isnt her worst head to head though. She has the 2-18 head to head vs Hingis I mentioned earlier, 10-11 vs 1 slam winner Novotna, 11-12 vs 1 slam winner Sabatini, and 5-6 vs the up and down Pierce. I think as in the case of Capriati, the head to heads vs top players are largely indicative of someone who definitely overachieved for their ability.

Considering you are someone who has said Seles would have been the greatest ever without the stabbing it is also hard to see you arguing that Seles would only be a 1 or 2 slam winner total without the stabbing. After all the 93-98 period was where Seles would have most had to excel in that case (it goes without saying 99 and beyond would be tough) and that is the period Sanchez Vicario won 3 of her slams. Sanchez Vicario was about 10 times as incapable of beating a prime Seles as Graf, she was even incapable of beating a post stabbing Seles nearly everytime out.

I agree she isnt boring. She is entertaining to watch especialy vs a bigger hitter where she gets to show off her best defensive and scrambling skills.

I'm not sure what your point is, here.

Sanchez Vicario was about 10 times as incapable of beating a prime Seles as Graf, she was even incapable of beating a post stabbing Seles nearly everytime out.

Sanchez Vicario's strengths weren't as effective against Seles because Seles had similar strengths herself, and was better at them. Sanchez Vicario liked to engage her opponents in demanding, hard-fought rallies and force her opponents to go toe-to-toe. Seles was completely in her comfort zone in these matches and would nearly always win in the end.

I'm not sure what your point is, here.

It is pretty simple. Unless you are disagreeing Sanchez Vicario would have won only 1 or 2 slams total without the Seles stabbing (which I doubt) then that is already enough for her to be well overrated. It means she would have fewer slams than people many rate her over now like Davenport (though many rate Lindsay higher anyway), Sharapova, Clijsters. If she had only 1 slam like Sabatini I bet most would even rank her below her as well.

It seemed except for Graf (who despite being a tough matchup for she still won less than a quarter of their matches) that Sanchez was an easy matchup for any of the multi slam women. I already pointed out her awful head to head with Hingis which was even worse than vs Seles, her losing head to head with Pierce, and her losing head to heads with the best 1 slam players like Sabatini and Novotna.

I don't think she's overrated. As someone said, her greatness isn't something that's often brought up in tennis discussions and she isn't ever talked about as some kind of huge force in the women's game. However you don't make 12 slam finals by chance.

Ahhh, that first video brought back some good memories! I used to love watching Steffi and "adorable" Arantxa go at it....

She was fortunate to win 4 Grand Slams during the Graf-Seles era. But, Sanchez-Vicario certainly put the time into developing her game, and was willing to stay on the court all day to win a match. Based on those characteristics, I would not call her overrated. I would say that she overachieved.

If Sanchez is overrated, then that must mean that Serena is...

If Sanchez-Vicario is overrated, then what does that say about Serena Williams? The head to head record between these two is 4-3 in Sanchez's favor.

I just don't understand how some one so overrated and already past her peak in 1998 could manage a 4-match winning streak against Serena Williams. During that streak, Sanchez beat Serena on grass and hardcourts.

How many people thought in the middle of 1992 that Sanchez Vicario was a better player than Sabatini?
No one

It is true that her 4slamness owes a lot to lucky timing
