SEC Tennis

Chris Simpson has played 1 all year but he's not in the lineup today.

Yea Arias has mainly been at #3 for most of the year to be fair. Still though, LSU are definitely slipping. The level of player they are recruiting has dropped significantly.

Standings going into tomorrow's final day of the regular season and projected seeds for the conference tournament

1. Georgia (10-1) - clinches the regular season title and #1 seed with a win over Auburn
2. Kentucky (9-2) - locks up the #2 seed with a win over Florida or aTm loss to Miss St
3. Texas A&M (9-2) - can get the #2 seed with a win over Miss St and Kentucky loss - otherwise will be the #3
4. Florida (7-4) - will be the #4 seed with a win over Kentucky or Miss State loss to aTm
5. Mississippi State (7-4) - will be #5 seed unless they beat aTm and Florida loses to Kentucky.
6. Vanderbilt (5-6) - will be #6 seed unless they lose to S Carolina and Tenn beats Bama
7. Tennessee (5-6) - will be #7 seed unless they beat Bama and Vandy loses to S Carolina
8. South Carolina (4-7) - can't be any worse than #8 seed and could get a #7 if they beat Vandy.
9. Auburn (4-7) - will be the #9 seed
10. Alabama (4-7) - will be the #10 seed unless they upset Tennessee
11. Ole Miss (4-8 ) - locked into #11 seed
12. Arkansas (3-9) - locked into #12 seed
13. LSU (2-10) - locked into #13 seed

Sunday Schedule:

Georgia at Auburn - Georgia should win easily and it'll be a race to see who wins first. Dawgs 4-0

Tennessee at Alabama - Tennessee should win but it wouldn't surprise me if they dropped at least 2 singles matches - maybe 1 and 2. Vols 4-2

Florida at Kentucky - Should be a close match - Jomby and Roberts favored at 1 and 5, I like Hidalgo and Alford at 4 and 6 especially if UK rolls out Ellefsen again at 6. 2 and 3 probably will be the deciders I'd lean Watson at 2 and Pennington at 3 so that's be 3-3 with the doubles point giving someone 4. Gators 4-3

Texas A&M at Mississippi State - Aggies rebound from a rough loss to Ole Miss and take it to Miss St. aTm 4-0

South Carolina at Vanderbilt - Cocks embarrassed Vandy last year beating them 4-0 and won at 1, 2, & 3 only dropping 9 games on those 3 courts. I think Vandy wins but it'll be close. Vandy 4-3

Slow start by Vandy as South Carolina takes the doubles point and is up on 3 singles courts. Koch with a 6-0 set over Rhys Johnson.

Florida takes the doubles point over Kentucky winning #1 dubs in a TB. Kentucky finally got smart with singles and got Ellefsen out of there and put Lai at 5 and Roberts at 6. Lai with a 6-0 set over Orkin at 5 and Gomez up 4-1 at 2. Gators up 4-2 at 3 and 4. Other 2 on serve

Texas A&M takes the dubs point over Miss St winning a TB at 3 to clinch it. Aggs up breaks already at 1, 2, and 3.

Tennessee up in doubles on Alabama

Georgia up at 1 and 2 dubs but down at 3.

Auburn with some webcams this year for outdoor matches - they have an option for the quad box or you can pick 1 court to watch. They don't have the scores on top like Cal but still not bad viewing.

382f1462-ffb8-4b51-9741-3e87593e19e7_zps7e7bb0fd.png

Bama has turned it around in doubles and Proskura/O'Shaughnessey are close to taking out Libieits/Reese at 1.

Miss State is now up breaks on 3 courts after being down early so they're not going away without a fight. Vinsant gives Stropp a 1st set bagel

Vandy has its work cutout today - I figured it'd be a tough match but I'm not sure if I see them taking 4 courts at the moment. Johnson is turning his match at 5 and Lipman is close to a win at 2 but Austin is down a set and a break to Adams at 1, Yee is down a set, Offerdahl looks like he's going 3 after taking the 1st, and Eswaran is looking ok but needs to finish in straights.

Diep takes the 1st set over Jomby so that's 3 1st sets for Florida; however Gomez beating Watson up today leading 6-2 5-0 at 2 and Lai all over Orkin 6-0 5-2 at 5 so it's about to be 2-1 Kentucky.

why do some schools have video and some don't? why do some have blogs and some don't?

Resources, money, fan interest, school interest.

Never understood why Florida didn't have video and a blog. Actually they had a blog a few years ago for select home matches and then they dropped it. It looks like they get decent crowds so I wouldn't have thought lack of interest was the reason.

I remember the blog that Florida had. I liked it but I don't think anyone looked at it. But if UK has one that Florida should.

SEC Tournament

This should be the pairings

Thursday:
#8 Vanderbilt vs. #9 Auburn
#5 Mississippi State vs. Ark/LSU winner
#7 South Carolina vs. #10 Alabama
#6 Tennessee vs. #11 Ole Miss

Alabama was set to play Nichols State once today after the Tennessee match but since they lost to both Tennessee and Georgia this weekend they needed an extra win to get to a .500 record so they are playing Nichols State again as we speak.

do these coaches of smaller teams feel pressure that they have to agree to this? Why would Nicholls State agree to play again with no notice?

Maybe they promise a return visit down the road - hopefully Alabama at least pays for Nichols State's expenses for the trip.

Why? These smaller schools love playing the big boys. Nothing to lose, great experience and great for recruiting.

twice or three times in one day on little or no notice?

Nicholls State is ok because they can actually play tennis but is there any gain for a team like Jackson State to play Ole Miss 3 times in one day against players that could beat them with their hand tied behind their back? It's like in football when Savannah State was sent as sacrifice to FSU and OK State, but at least in that case the school was getting north of 500k in money in return.

Heck yeah there's a benefit for JSU or any small D1 playing Ole Miss all those matches in one day. 1. It's a high level of competition they rarely get to face, but need. 2. Believe it or not, it may prepare them better for their own conference tournament, that they could win and end up in the NCAA. 3. Coach uses those matches as advantages to playing at their school when recruiting.

Seriously doubt the big school would ever promise to return the favor and play them away. I do know of agreements that if the bigger/higher ranked school loses, they will play at the winners sight next year. I'll look into if the big school pays the smaller schools fees to come play the adhoc matches on short notice. Might take me a while to report back, but I'll get the answer.

On playing smaller schools

Alcorn State's coach said yesterday that he liked playing Ole Miss twice because it would help his team better prepare for their upcoming conference tournament. He didn't seem to have a problem.

I have heard that some schools with bigger budgets will reimburse costs of travel & hotels as well. As long as their kids don't get mentally abused by it, they don't have a lot to lose.

Personally, I wouldn't want to do that to my team. To each their own. The rules dictate the behaviors.

Gamecocks about to make one big run

If Ole Miss beats Tennessee they'll make the NCAAs. If they lose they'll be right on the cut off and will be sweating it out.

Georgia, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Florida should all host a regional since they'll be in the Top 16 assuming the committee gives the top 16 the option to host.

Mississippi State and Tennessee both have a shot at the finishing 16th and possibly getting to host a regional. Unfortunately for Miss State beating LSU or Arkansas on Thursday won't do anything for them point wise so they'll need to beat Florida on Friday to get the needed boost to go up in the rankings. Tennessee beating Ole Miss would actually improve their points and beating Kentucky would probably put them up to 16. Of course teams like Cal, Clemson, and even Memphis could pick up an impressive win the conference tourney and move up as well.

Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Alabama are in. Auburn will be right there with Ole Miss if they lose to Vandy. LSU and Arkansas don't have a shot unless they pull off several upsets.

good analysis.
Talentwise Ole Miss should get in, they have 3 good wins, but thats all..they ve only 3 decent wins..nothing else...a team that beats Vols, Vandy & Aggies should be in tournament.....but they ve no wins against teams like Michigan, LSU, Alabama, Auburn , S.Carolina..thats the problem

SEC, right now only 7 teams straight in ncaas...3 or 4others must really pray, also SC, Bama and Auburn look relatively safe
Florida, MSU and Tennessee all playing for their rights to host a regional.

1) UGA really dominated this league, also they got lucky, that A&M lost at Ole Miss, to clinch regular season title.
They swept their last 4 opponents. Smith and Pasha are hard to beat on 1 & 2 also it is possible, #3 could be a problem with Wagland, #4 with Brasseaux is strong, and #5 and #6 with Wood and Pieters are relatively safe, on 6 they are nearly unbeatable. Doubles is another big strength, as Diaz/Smith are nearly unbeatable at #3 and the other doubles normally take 1 of 2 ...

2) Texas A&M, nearly shocking they lost at Ole Miss, but they nearly came back from a 0-3 deficit, they tanked the doubles after being up a break on every court, would ve won with that point
then came back to win on the road at MSU, clear No.2 team in sec i think, especially outdoors. They better avoid a loss in their first match in SEC tournament or are in real danger of falling out of Top12 (sweet 16 problem !)
the Aggies are a great top to bottom team, also they miss a clear no.1 player who can deliver, the no.2 is also allways never safe, #3 and #4 with Adams and Vinsant are really strong, (they even can switch Efferding to 3 and Adams to 2), #5 and #6 are also strength, but also not impossible to beat.
Doubles is another strength, they normally pull out a win on #1 and #2, but not ever and 3rd doubles is only 50%. They are not unbeatable in doubles, and thats also the key for a win vs them, u need the doubles point, cause they are too good to lose 4 singles in normal times.

3) UK had the hope to get the 2nd place in SEC, when A&M lost at Ole Miss, but then UK lost to Florida on their own courts.
Jomby is a great weapon on #1 , maybe the best sec player together with Scholtz (Ole Miss), #2 and #3 are strong with Gomez and Pennington (also not unbeatable) #4 to #6 are problems vs better opponents, Lopez, Roberts, Lai, Hirooka, Ellefesen get their wins, but not every time, if u want to beat UK, u must beat them.

4) Florida would ve jumped ahead, but then they lost to Vanderbilt (surprise-surprise), but then they came to Lexington and got the better of UK. UF needs to win their first match in SECs or are in danger to lose top 16. They ve no clear no.1 player, maybe should move Diep up to that spot, and Newman down to 2nd ? #3 to #6 are the UF strengths. Doubles is so and so. And thats their season, on good days they can beat a lot teams, if they lose doubles and maybe #1 it is getting tough for the rest.

5) MSU lost to the Aggies, had their chances, but still lost, MSU has a good 1 -2 punch with Lakat and Stropp, but this team would be a lot better with another top-player. (like Bogaerts), Angus is good on #3 and #4 (together with White), Agarwal on #5 and Schmid on #6 are also getting their tributes (also some other sec-teams have better bottom players.) . Doubles is not that bad, but #2 often loses which puts lot of pressure on the rest. MSU is good enough to beat Florida on a good day, they ve luck (or sec-play and the standings) on their side, to avoid a tough first game. They just await the Arkansas-LSU-winner.

6) Vols, took care of the bottom teams in the last 2 weekends, to end their mid-season-sec skid. I believe this team is better as the results showed but losses at Vanderbilt and vs Ole Miss really hurt them. Need to beat Ole Miss and maybe also UK, to have hope on hosting a regional. Hunter Reese is amazing, he got really hot this season. Liebitis is a big dissapointment, he is still ranked high, but he is not playing so anymore. Fickey is another dissapointment. Chaplin is stepping up at #3 now. Dromsky & Kerner are tryin to hold 5 and 6, sometimes good and sometimes not. Doubles is top with nations best double Liebetis/Reese. But they need 2nd and 3rd singles to step up more.

7) Vanderbilt will be interesting how they play at home, but after easily giving away to SC...i ve my doubts, maybe they survive vs Auburn (they should) but vs UGA.not a chance. But Vandy is safe in the ncaas and will be not far away from the Top16. A little up and down team, they beat UF this weekend and then lost vs SC. They also bea Tennesses but lost to Ole Miss and Michigan for example and Alabama. In Austin and Lipman they ve one of the best 1-2 punches in the league. But from then it gets weak, if Offerdahl plays 6, this is a chance, but he also played higher and lost. Austin & Lipman are also a threat in individual doubles. If everything falls together the 'dores can beat anyone, with their 1 and 2 plus the doubles point, but it gets hard to get the 4th point.

8.) USC, maybe they should be even #7 as in SEC-standings and beat Vandy now..but their overall record is not that good, Adams is great he even beat Austin and Scholtz ! (no other player in sec has done that together!) Mihov looked great in fall, but he was never anymore the same player in spring. If he can regain his form, SC is dangerous, cause Pinheiro , Cox and Koch are great from 3 to 5, Schafer on #6 is also very solid. Doubles is a weakness on the team. SC is dangerous if everyone is in form. They were earlier Season Top20 ! (they earlier lost to Georgia Tech....ouch..)

9) Ole Miss is again back ahead of Alabama & Auburn, they are just the better team, also both losses still hurt a loss (never should ve happened in my opinion)
the win over A&M gave them a lifeline, interesting game now up vs Vols (everything can happen); Scholtz could be the best player in all-sec. Kallberg on 2 is a clear weakness, he was 2-9 in SEC, he allways lost and he lost it often fast. Lindmark on #3 was often overpowered, he can win matches, but...senior backstrom on #4 got better every week i think. (he can be the difference in sec-tournament), Jorge on #5 got better but he is only a freshman, #6 with Gowda is a weakness, maybe they should try even Rogers? (different style of play?)
Doubles is or was a great problem, also it got better the last weeks, they won 3 of the last 4 doubles points vs good teams. Ole Miss is very beatable team, weak on many days, but on some days they get together and can surprise better teams. But the ncaas are just a wish.

10) Alabama ,very much up and down year, hmm if i calculated right they are 14-14 over season , what if lose to SC now? then they are 14-15 and not eligible for ncaas or what? They had a good year in my eyes, beaten teams like Ole Miss, Vols, Vandy and Kentucky ! But on bad days lost to Auburn, Arkansas, getting swept by Okla State. Proskura on #1 is very good, Becker O. on #2 is also good, Kenyon and Nikko M. have their problems on #3 and #4, #5 is a big weakness, 3 diffrent players went 0-for-11 in sec play. #6 was better resultwise with 5-5 in sec-play with 2 diffrent players, but also should be a weakness. 'bama has only 1 good double (Becker O./Proskura) whch hurts them. The SC game is vital for them. (are they real 14-14???)

11) Auburn, also they fall apart the last weeks, there are slightly safe for ncaas (but still could fall down if some results not fall in their favor and Auburn is only underdog vs hosting Vanderbilt). They ve lost 7 in a row, also it was the 7 of the top8 in sec. Ollert, Cochrane, Lengsfeld are fine players, they could not beat the world, but a decent #1 to #3 team up front. Saleh on 4 is only mediocre, van Dooren on #6 is good but on #5 very chanceless. Tomic often covered #6 so van Dooren had to play #5. Auburns top 3 get a lof of pressure mostly. Doubles is only medium (if it is medium...)

12) Arkansas , no chance on ncaas, one good win vs Florida is not good enough overall..., and they are overmatched on most positions, they won 1 singles in sec on #1 with Nott, Fess was 0-for-11 on #43, Parlic was 2-8 on #4 Lee/Marino/Thomason/Munoz won 1 singles overall in sec on #6, only Jeske on 2 and den Toom on #2 and #5 had good results sometimes.
'Doubles was surprisingly a strength on Arkansas (they went 6-6 in SEC play in doubles points)

13) LSU, no chance on ncaas, now they also lost to arkansas, also they get the rematch tomorrow. Simpson overmatched on #1 , Butsch/Arias mostly overmatched on #2, 3 was solid especially when butsch or arias moved down to the 3. LSU mixed a lot in the bottom positions to find some success, but if u are mixing a lot....the wins are not so often there. Doubles are also weak, thats the difference why Arkansas could beat them.

outlook on Wednesdays play-in-game between Arkansas and LSU and the revenge game for last weekend.
=> Arkansas won easily 4-1 in the end
but i think LSU is a team that can beat Arkansas
Chris Simpson, LSUs #1 player not played, everyone had to move up, that especially hurt on 5th and 6th position (that was the only win Arkansas got on the #6 position in all sec-matches..lsu played with Perez...who not played the whole season in better matches)
I do not know why Simpson not played, tactically? injury? According to LSUs homepage he will be back tomorrow.
LSU lost the doubles on 2nd double tiebreaker

You are right, a&m are not unbeatable in doubles but they are very strong. However it is the #3 doubles that are leading the pack and almost always win, not 50%. Since January Szabo has won 18 matches, Efferding 17. They have lost only 4.

When has Texas A&M played Adams and Vinsant #3 and #4? Not sure you meant to say that.

Missouri shouldn't get to host the women's event if they don't have a men's team. Put a bit of pressure on then to get a men's team.

College tennis doesn't put pressure on anybody for anything. They, whoever they are, can't even put up a decent scoreboard system or tell Penn State where to go when they whine and pout. So I don't think anyone will be pressured to do anything.

Or is there even a "they"? If there is, they are pretty lousy at it.

Just wanna point out something. Vinsant is the number 2 player for Texas A&M with a record of 16-3 in duals, going 8-0 in sec. Seems pretty safe. And also the number 3 doubles pair has the strongest record. Szabo-Efferding are 17-4 on the season an 8-1 in sec play with the one loss coming to ole miss after having a match point. Thats just a touch over your 50% comment. Quite a ridiculous post about the aggies.
