rough start to the steinberg era and his very young team (true freshmen at 1-3), with three straight losses to WF (1-4) UNC (2-4) and FSU (0-4)

they'll get roughed up by Texas in a week, then frankly just need to focus on two things this season:
1) getting into the NCAA tournament
2) keeping Kim / Jin / Ganesan on board for next year and finding 1-2 bigtime recruits or transfers to join them...the current guys at 4,5,6 frankly aren't good enough to be on the singles roster of a team that would like to be top 10 again next season, has to be the current top 3 and some new blue chip blood to avoid a 3rd straight rebuilding season

Agree. They have a really promising top 3 who will be a force to reckon with. Steinberg has a reputation as a strong recruiter. Would expect him to solidify the roster more through transfers if he's looking to the short term to make an impact

Northern Michigan man was the wrong hire. Little Gators will be reeling from Shelton leaving for many years.

also bigtime alltime ole miss fan, Team has a good roster, but sth is not clicking anymore
losing doubles far too often right now
and the sec is a tough league again

maybe 2 home games now can help, uga will be a loss, but they can beat Tennesse if everything is alright. Bottom is notgood enough right now,Reynolds seems to be not ready for Big5 college-Tennis and Cotter Wilson is just an alternate.
What happened to our German Ole Miss fan? Haven’t seen him in a while. Guess he pulled a Kirijax and left us

LSU beat Memphis 4-3. Very tight match with some good drama coming down to the final 2 matches. Strong showing from the Memphis fans.

First time seeing LSU, they have a deep squad and looked good. Being their first ranked opponent I’m aware of my guess is they should have a better than anticipated SEC season.

SEC season also gets started tomorrow. Here's how the league stacks up by ranking heading in.

5 Tennessee
7 Kentucky
12 Texas A&M
16 South Carolina
18 Alabama
25 LSU
26 Mississippi State
31 Auburn
43 Georgia
45 Vanderbilt
47 Arkansas
52 Florida
unranked Ole Miss

This should be a very intriguing year in the SEC. Lots of teams very close together. What's interesting is that how they are slotted right now by ranking could be quite different from how good the teams actually are and where they finish in the SEC standings.

I’d say Florida and Georgia will be higher, and Kentucky and Alabama lower when the dust settles.

Does anyone know if Connor Thomson will be healthy this year? South Carolina is a very good team with him.....average without him. Kentucky will not finish in the top 10 in the country. I also don't see Texas A&M as one of the top 16 teams in the country. Georgia at Mississippi State this weekend....should be a very close match.

MSU if healthy should beat UGA 4-1 or 4-2.

He got hurt in doubles vs NC State. Someone on a gamecock forum said he was in crutches during singles of that match and that was confirmed by those who were at ITA indoors that he’s still on crutches. So that’s not a good sign for him.

Vols thumped Georgia today, 6-1. It very much looked like UT was going to lose the doubles point, but a big rally from Matsui and Pieczonka on Court 2
turned a doubles L into a W after Monday and Diaz took a competitive match on court 1. After that the Vols dominated singles play. If UT's two freshman continue to develop--
and Pieczonka has already proven to be pretty strong (big first serve)--the Vols could be a tough by the end of the season, especially as Li is showing hints of getting his game together.

Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky looked good.

LSU moves to 11-1 on the year, avenging their lone loss to SC. They could make a challenge for top 16 this year at this rate.

The wheels are in danger of fully coming off in Columbia. The .500 record rule in play for them this year.

Interesting how Kim was projected as the pick of the freshmen but has now been supplanted by Jin and Ganesan. But they are all really talented.

The gap between Kim and Jin wasn't that big it seems. They were separated by one ITF ranking position at 42 and 43 with Jin being the higher ranked of the two. I wonder if the decision to play Kim above Jin was based on perceived potential.

Georgia and Ole Miss pick up much needed wins. Georgia more safely in the tournament zone now. That match vs Bama looked to be pretty epic with some of the some backs and tiebreaks. Ole
Miss will get into the rankings and make the tournament possible. LSU’s momentum heavily stymied by that loss and likely kills any chance of top 16 for them.

Impressive singles sweep for Kentucky over Florida.

Arkansas dominants Vandy 7-0. This is a better looking Arkansas team than normal. They could be a danger to SC on Sunday.

The Ole Miss win at LSU is a bit of a shocker. Will be interesting how that impacts a team that beat Ole Miss but loss to LSU. Lol

Auburn beats Georgia for only the 5th time in their history.

South Carolina barely survives Arkansas. (Story came back from 3-2 down in the 3rd to win 6-4 in the 3rd set of the clincher.) that prevents them from complete free fall and denied Arkansas a ranking boosting win.

Big win for Arkansas today against Auburn to put them in better position to make the NCAA tournament. They lost 4-3 to Kentucky earlier as well. They’ve been knocking on the door of a breakthrough win and finally got something to show for their efforts.

Still on the bubble though and will be sweating it out the rest of the year.

Arkansas was very close to knocking off Kentucky. I think that Weekes and Lapadat lost at 3 singles and 2 singles when they played Arkansas
Kentucky is 9-0 in the league......but they have not been dominant
Lapadat lost badly today to Ole Miss #2...and Baadi lost in straight sets to Ole Miss #1.
I still like Tennessee to defeat Kentucky when the 2 teams have their regular season matchup.

Yeah it’s weird isn’t it? It feels like they are not as strong as last year and vulnerable and yet here they are at 9-0 and pushing top 4 in the nation. I guess you can make the case that the SEC overall is having a bit of a down year.

huge win for the Gators over the Dawgie dawgs in athens

impressive win for TT at the 5 slot

Tanapatt really seems like a nice young man. In this day and age of kids just pounding the ball from the baseline, it is nice to see a creative serve and volleyer. He really keeps the ball low with his slice shot approaches.

If you go to college tennis ranks, Chris Halioris's projected rankings show that Kentucky will be #4 tomorrow when the ITA rankings come out. Texas will drop to #5. IMHO, Texas would be a gigantic favorite if they matched up against Kentucky. Kentucky's win over Virginia (when Rodesch was playing Davis Cup ....and when Inaki Montes was injured)....are really propping them up in the rankings. Kentucky's 2 losses this year are to Duke and Alabama.

Yeah South Carolina is also being propped up by their win AT Virginia. Which is the single biggest ranking point win for any team in the country. Without that they would be in the 30s.

After all the positives we said about LSU, they are sitting at 1-8 in SEC play dead last in the standings. But are still solidly in the ncaa tournament zone in the rankings.

Overall I like the ITA ranking system but if there’s one thing I would tweak is that losses would hurt a bit more as the season goes on. When it starts counting 8 wins or more, losses have almost no impact on a team’s ranking anymore.

A couple of 3rd set deciders going on right now.

3-3 between Tennessee and Miss State and a full 3rd set will decide it on court 2. Jovanovic came back from a break down to take the 2nd set over Mitsui 7-5.

3-3 between Auburn and Alabama with a full 3rd set to come on court 1. Tyler Stice just saved a few match points in the 2nd set breaker against Planinsek to win the tiebreak 12-10 and force a 3rd set.

Mitsui has been outstanding for Tennessee at #2 in SEC Play.
Tennessee should win tomorrow at Ole Miss.
Going into next weekend....Kentucky will be 10-0 in the league and Tennessee should be 10-1 after tomorrow
Tennessee has no match next Friday.
Kentucky hosts Georgia on Friday and they host Tennessee on Sunday.
The winner of the Tennessee at Kentucky match on Sunday...will determine the top seed for the conference tournament.

A couple of notes on Kentucky:

- Winning on the road in the SEC is extremely tough. When A&M, Auburn, and UF came to UK - it was never close.
- Saying that, UK just went 3-0 in a road stretch, battling injuries and playing their C-game
- Arkansas match - unplayable conditions with 22mph winds and match should have been played indoors. Yes, yes, both teams have the wind - but if I were the Arkansas coach I would def want to play in shtty conditions Vs a more skilled team. SEC commissioner sided with Arkansas as his weather app was showing 19mph winds. UK still won.
- Ole miss match was pretty terrible.
South Carolina was clinched at 4-1…
- Terrible loss Vs Alabama early in the ITA indoor kickoff; but Uk then destroyed Alabama a month later.
- Terrible loss Vs Duke as well… had matchpoints in doubles to win dubs point. Duke pulled a bit of a stack putting Johns at #2 - other than that, no excuses really.
- Really good out of conference wins at Illinois and Vs Harvard.
- Uk doesn’t seem as dominant as they don’t have a ‘big name’, per se, playing 1-2… (crazy to think Draxl and Diallo would still be eligible this year). Baadi punches up really well at #1, but inconsistent at times. Similar with Lapadat at #2. Weekes is streaky - but playing great lately.
- Their strength this year (as opposed to the past couple of years) are the 4-6 spots, and slightly better doubles. Cosnet-Loutit-Stephenson are an extremely tough out for any team. Stephenson was undefeated as a freshman before an injury, but should be back Vs UGA and TN. Loutit is an absolute psycho beast that competes to the end.
- UK vs TN Match - the winner of the doubles point will win the match. Monday is 70/30 Vs Baadi. Lapadat and Weekes are 50/50. Favoring UK at 4-6 spots, especially if Stephenson is playing.
- #4 is probably a bit high - this year it’s OSU, TCU, Texas, and UVA in a class of their own - then #5-20 are all interchangeable and can all beat each other.

Starting to learn how to play on his weakest surface, going to be a hard guy to keep out of the top 10 once his clay and grass results become in any way comparable to his HC results
My guess is he's playing Barcelona Open next, then the Madrid Open.

Arkansas has had a crazy season full of three set drama. In their last three wins... 7-6 in the 3rd vs Auburn, 7-6 in 3rd vs LSU and 7-5 in 3rd vs A&M in the clinchers. In the A&M match, they rallied on three different courts. Cardiac Hogs.

Looks like there will be 11 SEC teams in NCAAs. Even Vandy is on bubble for long shot 12th team. They play LSU and GA at home and they could win one of those…What is amazing to me is SC is 11-12 below .5. They play two MMs to bring them to 13-12 but if they lose to FL they would be 13-13. If they were to lose in 1st rd Sec could be sub .5. They might want to squeeze in a Citadel match LOL

LSU will also possibly face that issue at 11-10 with Auburn and Vandy left on the schedule. They don't really deserve a tournament spot with a 1-9 record in the SEC and are only propped up in the rankings by a win over SC, who is also propped up by one win from the start of the season.

UGA and Vandy also close to the .500 line. Would be funny if SC misses out thanks to that.

LSU also had an away win over Memphis. Memphis had a win over Harvard. Does the computer rankings take all this into consideration?

Yeah they all count. That’s LSU’s 2nd best win but Memphis just lost to SMU so they dropped some.

I understand LSU’s computer rating is still within the tournament zone but I just feel like if you lose almost every game in your league, you should not be an NCAA tourney team. Shows the flaw of the ITA system not punishing losses enough overall.

Then again it encourages teams to schedule tough for good matches rather than schedule easier. So I can see both sides of it.

Texas A&M is trying their hardest to not get a top 16 hosting gig. At one point, they were 7-2 in the SEC. Lost their last 3 matches to Arkansas, Auburn and Alabama.
This is the same team that defeated Mississippi State 7-0 earlier in the year.
