Shelton now officially the top ranked American male

Crazy, this time three years ago he was suiting up at the 5 singles slot for the Gators - still 6 weeks or so away from clinching the team title

LSU scheduling an Alcorn state double header so they can get into the tournament despite almost losing out in their league.

The Kentucky/Tennessee match did not disappoint. Wildcats get it done at home. Tennessee really blew it in the doubles point.

Yep: Tennessee's number 2 doubles team was up 5-2 and lost 5-7. Brutal. Cost the Vols the match. Chris Li, who was awful indoors,
had been playing marvelously outdoors in the # 3 spot until this match, which he lost in three sets. Freshman Filip Pieczonka, who was strong
early in the season, indoors, for the Vols, has struggled somewhat the last month and his loss, also in three sets, gave the match to Kentucky. SEC
tourney is next!

I know I’m harping on it at this point but LSU lost 11 matches in a row. Didn’t win since March 1 before the alcorn state double header. But they’ll still make the tourney cause they beat Memphis and Rice non-conference.

Definitely exposing some flaws with the ITA system where losses basically mean nothing in the formula after a certain point in the season

They’re close to closing out Ole Miss now. The weight of schedule strength is that’s what is carrying their high ranking seems out of wack. No way a Baseball, Softball, BB, etc., could lose 11 in a row 11 of last 13 coming down to the conference tournament and make one of those NCAA’s as an at large.

On the other hand, are they really an inside the cut line worthy team?

South Carolina gets a big win over Alabama. If they can beat Miss State also, they will move back into hosting discussions.

Arkansas taking UGA to the woodshed right now. This would not be a nice way for Diaz to end his SEC tourney career. Let's see if they can fight back at all.

South Carolina should not be in the hosting discussion. They went 4-8 in the SEC. They were the 11 seed in a 13 team conference tournament. They are playing now without Casey Hoole. If Conor Thomson had been healthy this year, they really would have had a great year. Arkansas has really stepped up their game late in the year. Credit to the players and the coaches for their improvement.

that being said ...about SC...college tennis ranks...shows that SC went from 24 to 19 with today's win and that Alabama dropped from 19 to 21. If I key in SC beating MSU on neutral court, SC moves from 19 to 18.

Yeah amount of losses mean almost nothing to the ITA rankings. Which I think is something they should tweak. Teams having these gaudy losing records but holding on to their rankings is weird.

JC Roddick just blew a 6-1 3rd set tiebreak lead to lose the match for A&M who should be playing their way out of hosting contention now but again losses have no consequences so they will probably stay top 16 because they won a couple big ranking matches back 2 months ago.

the ncaa committee....sure needs to apply some logic....to the 16 hosts.....A&M.....lost their last 4 SEC matches....to non top 16 teams...Arkansas, Bama, Auburn and LSU. LSU was playing without their #2 and their #3. How in the world did Tokac lose 3 and 1 to LSU #5 player? This really seems like a down year for college tennis. Florida State, Duke, A&M, Harvard and some of the other teams ranked between 11 and 20...are not elite teams.

When the Dawgs are down all of college tennis suffers. Lifeblood program of the whole sport.

This feels true. Like most years you look at the 10-16 teams and you think wow there are some good teams here. But this year that group is full of teams where you’re like “they don’t feel like they should be hosting.” Miss State a prime example. Also Duke feels like they’ve had a bit a of a disappointing year yet they are still there in the same spot.

and yet even in a year where the 9-16 teams are rubbish and the inflated strength of the COVID years has evaporated, Stanford won't be a host

a sad state of affairs

they have had an amazing run. They basically go into every match down 0-1 as Carter Morgan can't win at 6.

Tennessee had a bad day. Monday and Diaz can usually be counted on to win at No. 1 doubles, and to win their singles matches: Monday often a near-lock and Diaz
has been very good at the #6. But Monday/Diaz lost their doubles match, and the Vols lost the crucial dub point. Monday cruised in singles, but Diaz was moved to the 5
spot and couldn't get it done--lost in 3 sets. That spelled trouble. Vols started strong in singles but faded---maybe it was the Louisiana heat/humidity. Matsui was up 4-1 in his first-set tiebreaker and somehow lost it and lost his match. Li, who has been good outdoors, looked to be having some physical problems and lost in straights. Freshman Pieczonka, who was impressive in the first half of the season, has struggled the last month. His match was unfinished but he was behind in the 3rd. Lose the dub point and your chances of beating a good team probably go from 70% to 30%. Vols suffer because they don't really have a true 2. Matsui has been solid in the spot, a fierce competitor, but he's really a 3. When playing a good 2, he's winning probability falls. On to the NCAA!

Huge story on the women's side is the return of Carson Branstine to Texas A&M, just in time for the SEC and NCAA tourneys. Slotted right in at #1 singles and already winning against highly ranked players. Slots into #2 doubles and helps cure Texas A&M's problems in doubles, where they have not had enough net players to field three good teams.

Texas A&M vs. Georgia in Sunday's SEC tourney final.

That's kinda crazy that she came back just in time. I wonder if more schools will present this option to good players going forward. That they can come back in time for the tournament while technically still being enrolled.

Wish I knew more about the rules details. Something tells me it’s even crazier than this example.

Time to put Cedric Kauffmann amongst the best coaches in the country. Kentucky was always solid under him but he did the very difficult accomplishment of leading his program to jump from very good/solid up to nationally elite the last few years

He has leaned into his French/Canada pipeline connections to get talent and then molds them into teams that seem to always have a great togetherness and team spirit.

This years team was not supposed to be this good yet they went unbeaten in conference play to defend their SEC crown.

A&M (Im an Aggie) actually tried slotting Carson at #3, and UF (of VU, I forget) appealed and the SEC made them put her at #1.

So the overall women's #1, Mary Stoiana, played #2 in the SEC championship.

Carson actually got hurt in the SEC final today and finished out the match in great pain.

Yes, she was holding her hip. It was hip surgery last May that almost ended her career. Very sad to see.

The A&M coach responded to the SEC challenge by asking the SEC coaches to agree on where Branstine should play in the lineup. Eventually, the vote was unanimous, 13-0, for placing her at #1. Somewhat surprising, as that helps the chances of 5 teammates. But she does have (by a small margin) the top UTR on the team.

It’s a good page. Sometimes controversial, but overall trying to bring more positive attentions to college tennis.

I don't like.....when they run polls on most over rated coaches....or the biggest cheaters

who ever runs the site is very juvenile
I'm not a fan of that either. Not saying it's the best method, but I think they are trying to get views, likes, engagement, etc. Seems like one of the social media growth models, and those posts can give it a tabloid feel.

Vanderbilt bring in a 13.30 freshman from South Korea

Hoyoung Roh. Ranked #10 in ITA junior world rankings and highest ranked recruit in Vandy history.

I've always kinda thought South Korea was an untapped college tennis talent market but this year two highly rated ones are coming in (also the that one UVA is bringing in).
Awesome recruit for Vandy. Does he start spring or fall?

Agree that South Korea has to have a lot of talent coming up through the juniors. At least enough to play some tennis state side. Would be interesting to know their culture. Do they have a university system that makes more sense staying home, and playing some amature or pro while in college? Do they have a culture within their junior systems that encourages kids to go pro and if they can't make it on the tour hang it up, stay home and go to school? South Korea also has a strict military requirement, 3 yrs., that might be a the big hurdle.

I have not kept up......with which mens tennis teams have added good recruits....and good transfers...

I know that Texas will probably finish first this year in the SEC.
What SEC teams are expected to finish 2nd and 3rd?

Georgia is adding a former Wimbledon doubles champion (Gabriele Vulpita) in January.
Oscar Pinto Sansano (from VCU) will also help them.
If Vulpita can play 2 or 3 for Georgia, I think they will finish 2nd or 3rd in the SEC.

Kentucky at 2 is surprising. Ghibaudo's good but I don't believe they have the roster depth to be up there ahead of Tennessee. But I thought the same last year and they proved me wrong!

Georgia not even in the top 25. I think they could be a little better than they expect and push for top 20.

Bruno Nhavene has to be the most popular college tennis player in the country now lol.

OU tennis tweets are all blowing up now, way more than any college tennis tweets usually do. Oklahoma is kinda obligated to play him at #6 and in doubles now to give the new fans what they want.
