SEC Tennis

He didn’t play great today. Not in doubles and in singles blew a few 40-0 leads in the first set. He did break when Da Silva served for it 6-4 5-4. So at least he avoided being clinched against but Thomson was already up 5-0 in his 2nd set at the same time so it was a a moot point.

But yeah overall 1 and 2 haven’t been the issue for UGA this year.
Ryan Colby needs to be playing #1.

Well that was a waste of time. Went to attend UGA at SC. Georgia was just bad across the board other than Mahjoob at 6. Barely over 2 hour match.

Can’t believe SC is gonna get to host cause nobody in the SEC can beat them. Even without Hoole now
Georgia is 2-7 on the road this year. Not sure why Paulsell and their regular #6 ...did not play singles today.

No clue. Paulsell played doubles. And didn’t play great but looked fine physically. And yeah I don’t know why they would think Blaydes at 5 was a good idea. He hasn’t been competitive in his few appearances in big matches this year. And he looked terrible vs Sarr.

Vulpitta has lost a couple of 3-3 clinchers now (Bama and Florida) but he’s taking the matches deep into 3rd sets and mostly winning.

Hoole was wearing an ankle cast thing on his left leg and limping around. But I overheard someone say “MAYBE next week”. So it seems they are trying to get him back.

Senior Day at A&M saw quite a bit of action. Magadan, Ross, Salvestre, Perego, Casper, Roddick all graduating.

They’ll have to find some ready replacements.

I do hope that Hoole can come back soon. SC is well coached....

Blaydes is a very good doubles player...but he is not playing doubles??? He is not a SEC caliber singles player.

I think the only way SC doesn’t host now is if they lose to Florida and then get upset in 1st round of SEC tourney. Cause even if they lose to Florida they’ll still be right on the 16 cut line and a couple SEC tourney wins or even just one should be enough then.

Much needed win for A&M at Tennessee 4-3 with the clinch coming at 4. If they had lost that, the wheels would have come completely off and they would have been in danger of not hosting. Still have a tough one at Georgia on Sunday, but this win should be enough to get them top 16. They need to get that lineup figured out though.

LSU finally gets an SEC win. Over a fading Alabama team.

Vanderbilt had a big bubble win over Arkansas Thursday. Gets them into the field for now and moves Arkansas closer to the cut line.

Also on Thursday Kentucky with their first good win in a while over Oklahoma. They are trying to get into the #2 seed range for NCAAs, as they were in the #3 seed conversation before beating OU.

Vanderbilt had a big win on Saturday over Oklahoma. However, they are 12-13. Are they able to schedule a doubleheader to finish with a .500 record? (assumes they lose first round in SEC tournament).

is JC Roddick out for the year? Texas A&M will not advance to the sweet 16 if Roddick does not return.

Not much time before the SEC tourney. Vandy will play on Wednesday and have to leave Tuesday. Do they still allow matches after conference tourney or wasn't that outlawed?

Roddick has been out for a while and it’s not just him. Tokac and Pires have been in and out as well. A&M is having to go like 9 or 10 deep on the depth chart. The lineup today against UGA is pretty weak.

How in the world was A&M allowed to play Perego at 6 today?
on friday, at Tennessee...they had Pires at 3, Casper at 4, Tokac at 5 and Perego at 6
today, they had Casper at 3, Ross at 4, Ritil or something like that at 5 and Perego at 6
Perego is much better than the guys that played at 4 and 5

I know that today's match did not matter to A&M. (for seeding purposes)
A&M...without JC Roddick...is not a top 16 team

I think that there are going to be a lot of regional hosts this year....that do not advance to the super regionals

The Vols are not worthy of being in the top 16.....
very tainted win....with Gorzny, brown and Okajaar out
Yep. They need to send Texas a Christmas card this year. I’m not a fan of the college football playoff committee stuff but this would be a case where “the human element” would have some input.

Oh well, I won’t complain too hard cause Knoxville is a very possible landing spot for Clemson which I would be a-ok with.

No clue. I actually went to this match. Even though there weren’t really any stakes for either team beyond pride I felt like seeing some tennis in the great weather. Plus hadn’t seen A&M in person in a few years.

But when I saw Ross and Patil walking out there for 4 and 5 I was like what the hell. No clue how Patil over Perego in particular flew in the SEC lineup submissions. And sure enough look at the scorelines.

Tokac was in a non-uniform Aggie t shirt so he was planned to sit today. Same with Pires.

I don’t think Roddick was there. Didn’t see him amongst the Aggie bench players. I thought I saw him at first but then I realized I had him mixed up with Pires.

Silvestre was also not there. His transfer has been a complete flop. NC State got better without him and he’s done nothing at A&M.

Every #2 seed is gonna be licking their chops to be sent to College Station. Another spot I wouldn’t mind seeing Clemson sent to.

10th in the SEC is a very disappointing season for Oklahoma. Remember, we were saying they would be at least 4th in the league and maybe even 2nd or 3rd. Most thought they would be top 15 team in the nation. But they are now barely hanging on to a #2 seed in the tournament. And like I mentioned before, they tend to lose singles matches in straight-set routs pretty often for some reason. Across the board, not just one player or one weak spot. The only exception was Alvarez, who was their only player to deliver more often than not in SEC play.

SEC coaches...had some pretty huge misses
Oklahoma at 2 (finished 10th)
LSU at 10 (finished 15th)
South Carolina at 8 (finished tied for 2nd....)
Florida at 11 (6 seed)
they also under estimated Auburn

Predicted Order of Finish

  1. Texas
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Mississippi State
  4. Georgia
  5. Kentucky
  6. Texas A&M
  7. Tennessee
  8. South Carolina
  9. Alabama
  10. LSU
  11. Florida
  12. Vanderbilt
  13. Auburn
  14. Arkansas
  15. Ole Miss

Looking at USC's draw I like their chances to make the finals.

Inexcusable loss for Vandy against a Planinsek-less Bama to end their season.

Hard to really judge Vandy’s year. It had some ups but overall probably not what Coach Brown wanted in year 2. Next year should be a step up though with Ho-young coming in a top #1.

Tennessee is struggling mightily to defeat an Alabama team.....playing without Planinsek.

Tennessee is not one of the top 16 teams in the country !!!!. If I am Clemson, I badly want to be sent to the Tennessee regional.

Straight set Sooners at it again. All wins or losses against Georgia in routine 2 set fashion. Except for #6 which OU clinches 6-4 in 3rd.

Dawgie Dawgs out in round 1 of SEC tourney

and Oklahoma had Kholo Montsi playing number 1 yesterday against LSU.
Oklahoma pulled Montsi from the lineup today and moved everyone up a spot.
Their #7 player came thru with a very clutch win at 6.

very disappointing loss for Georgia (when Oklahoma was not at full strength)

Crazy how georgia went from potentially having one of the greatest college tennis rosters of all time (Michelson, Quinn, Buse), to now.

You’re right. I didn’t even see Montsi was out at first glance cause I’m used to seeing Lacides at 1. The no-ad podcast said UGA could be a dark horse since they beat Miss State in the season but they didn’t mention that OU beat UGA during the year.

also Kentucky had a disappointing loss to Auburn right when it looked like they might finally be showing some form.

UK vs UGA was an epic SEC final in 2023. Two years later and they are both out before the SEC quarters.

Georgia graduates their top 4 players (Perez, Colby, Paulsell and Sansano).
With the NCAA tournament being in Athens in 2026 and 2027, Georgia might be able to attract some talented players in the transfer portal.

I agree with the no ad podcast that Miss. State is not a strong #2 seed. Will be interesting to see if Hoole is finally healthy for South Carolina. With a healthy Hoole, I would probably bet on a Texas vs. SC final.

I am an SEC tennis fan....but the league this year....does not deserve to have 5 regional hosts.

Florida almost had an epic comeback win over SC. Needed 1-3 3rd sets and I assumed #1 would be the problem one for Florida with Thomson surely going to clinch for SC. But Ganesan actually fought back from a break down to take the lead. It was eventually court 3 that clinched after Daryabeigi rallied from an 0-2 3rd set deficit to win 6-4.

No idea how SC pulled out that match vs Miss State. MSU had the advantage the whole time, even if it was a close one. Sarr and Thomson just willed it out in front of the home crowd. Both of them are “heart” players who play to the crowd and show their emotions. Winning 3rd set breakers within a couple mins of each other to clinch the 4-3 comeback win.

If SC can recover physically (they finished several hours later than Texas did), they will have a shot vs the Longhorns.

Alexander Frusina in the transfer portal. Had a pretty solid freshman year for Auburn. Mainly playing at #2. Surprised he’s moving on after just one season there.

Makes you wonder what is going on at Auburn with him and another guy leaving. Maybe he is coming back to state of Texas. or maybe he just wants to see what kind of NIL he can get

It's probably a play for money--or more money. That's what it is for most of players in most sports now. It's a mess. A lot of guys in various sports are now transferring
every year: the four different teams in four years is starting to become a thing--a dumb thing.

Very dumb thing. Makes me wonder if they even graduate and get a degree.

That said, I think Frusina is leaving for right intentions. When he committed, it was kind of head scratching, but methinks he wanted to be with John Roddick who was the assistant there. Roddick leaves in August right before school starting and instead of trying to find a place last minute, decides to stick around and see how it goes for the year. This is similar to the situation with Aidan Kim (committed to a coach, coach leaves, decides to try a year, didn't like, leaves)

Yeah only 28 years old. One year older than Capalbo, who is playing at Wake.

Assistant at Charlotte then at Miss State. Very quick rise up to head coach of an SEC program.

Ole Miss hires Jake Jacoby as head coach. Away from rival Miss State.
Didn't see that coming although I did hear from a reliable source they were looking at P4 assistants. He's a good kid and not from too far down the road in Little Rock. I'd like to think Ole Miss will be a good long term job.

Ole Miss will have 2 new first time HC running their programs. I agree both are/were solid Asst Coaches with good teachers

He was on the final list; they brought in close to a dozen for interviews and trimmed it down to final 5, which included multiple P4 assistants. I'm a little surprised they took Jacoby, only because of his youth. That said, this hurts Miss St a decent amount, which is always a good thing at Ole Miss

@Clemson_tennis if the first thing to point out is the UTR to sell oneself, be careful! This rating is corrupt in ways you can only imagine. The system has been set up to favor EU firstly and then NA. To ellaborate, let me say that if you start from scratch in EU tennis, you'll get placed higher after the first match than anywhere else. But the current ATP ranking is pretty convincing to say the least. Obviously, the 21-year old won't be able to make it in pros but at the college, given that he's got brains, he may a lot more likely.
