Self-Rate Question

They played HS and college tennis in the Philippines and were part of a team that won NCAA Philippines titles.

Does that sound like a 4.0 to you?

So if you have the data on their tennis history, just compare it to the questionnaire for USTA self rate. If they’re lying, then they’ll get a bump up. Just playing HS etc in their own country doesn’t really subject them to a bump up. Playing internationally and representing your country could.

Were they rated in their country?

I had a cousin move to the US from PI that played college also. After playing with me and a group of friends, he was at a minimum a 4.0.

I did a search online to find the results but couldn’t find anything. There’s another guy who played college in the Philippines who is a 5.0 self-rate.

This guy played on a championship team, so I would imagine he’s better than 4.0.

I didn't know the NCAA had any international schools in the Philippines.

I think there are a couple Canadian schools that participate in NAIA and at least one at the NCAA D2 level. But most would be in the CCAA. Years ago my son had a swim coach who was from Michigan but swam in college at a Canadian school. It wasn't NCAA she said it was comparable to NCAA d3 / NAIA

it sounds suspicious but if you’re a 3.5 playing up, it may be easy to mistake a solid 4.0 player for being out of level.

Here's an article about the recent college team championship in the Philippines. Seems pretty high level - many of the players have UTR's in the 9's and 10's.

Fair point and I am guessing you really gotta be out of level to get that treatment.
He played for a championship team in the Philippine version of the NCAA. There’s another guy who also played there, and he self-rated as a 5.0.

The guy who self-rated as a 5.0 is probably a low 5.0, but he’s still a 5.0. I questioned the guy who self-rated as a 4.0 right away.

wow. How long is he suspended? I remember there were rules on points but it seemed like you had to behave egregiously like profanity or threats to get it. Not merely underrating… the guy could just say English is his 3rd or 4th language and he misunderstood.

That sounds kinda like the Sinner excuse. “I’m just a simple tennis player.”

That changed in 2023 when they put the official suspension point system in place. Knowingly underrating is now part of the official suspension system. Based on everything here, it seems like the USTA considered the Filipino college system to be the equivalent to the US NCAA.

Thanks, so if they gave him 10 points for knowingly failing to self-rate in accordance w/ guidelines or omitting information re. tennis history, then he would be suspended for 3months after which those 10 points are expunged.

He's also a teaching pro. So there's that too.
"Teaching pro" does not enter into the self-rating algorithm at all. I think there used to be a rule that teaching pros had to self-rate at 4.0, but that was at least 10 years ago or more. There are several teaching pros in this area who are legitimate 4.0s and a couple who are 3.5. While many teaching pros are current/former high level players, you don't really have to have any talent to feed balls to bored housewives in a Tuesday morning drill, either.

Great point. There was a 3.0M rated teaching pro playing in our 6.0 Mixed League last year and his rating was/is legit since he's mid-50s and didn't play in college.
