So had my second match in my return to 'competition'. This time playing #1 singles against a pretty good player. He had really good strokes so I knew I had my hands full. He started slow and basically gifted me the first set 6-2. Second set he picked it up and really started targeting my fh (as all good players do) and took it 4-6.

Third set I was behind a break the whole set and it was looking grim until I was able to break him at 3-5. At this point the other singles were done and dubs hadn't started yet so both teams were watching the conclusion of our match (pressure!). Still, I was behind the whole third set till the tiebreak which I got a 3-0 lead in and ended up winning 7-4 (with an approach, volley, overhead winner wooo). I love that this league actually plays the third set instead of a tb.

Best part is we barely won the tie 3-2, so it was a very meaningful win for the team.

Match was over 2 hours, I'm sore today but not too bad. Overall I would give myself a 'B' for tennis but an 'A' for grit/hanging in there. Now I just need my thumb/wrist to heal so I can practice my serve. At least I am used to all the braces on my hand now lol.

Can we remove your "over 50" card for this comment? Or do you clearly not want to play tennis when you are 70? 3 full sets of running around on hard courts is probably something not recommended for orthopedic health at our age.

Yeah ... but he will remember that win in the senior home.

Seems that guys are moving up by the notifications/alerts, Chael’s Angels writing already at the 65–85 lounge. More comfy armchairs and better service there presumably.

First season in a league coming to an end tonight. Away match against better players than our #1 and he’s not in the team for tonight.

Nothing big on the line, cause we really sucked the whole season and will end at the last spot. Anyway, it has been nice to meet people from different clubs and play new faces.

Got to take the captaincy for next winter. Looking forward to get a couple new players into our team to have it easier to sort the team for every occasion. Other things going on in life too, so it would be good to have a reserve.

The upside is that these 2 factors mean you can play loosely with no expectations. You may just surprise yourself how freeing that is.

Congrats, OnTheLine! And welcome to the adult team!

A typo on the first word reminded me of a travellers agency golf tourney in Spain. The anouncer at the price giving said scratch ”strats”. Got annoyed, and could’t help myself taking another big one.

Ignorance is a bliss.

While playing tonight, there was a couple youngsters practicing on the next court to ours, while playing the doubles game.

Got really sad by the shot quality of the young lads hitting really hard inside the court.

If only I didn’t take the hiatus for 25 odd years of this devil’s game.

I'm not sure if becoming an official member of this thread is such a good thing. Kind of like becoming the All-Time homerun king of minor leagues like Crash Davis.

And yet ... they want in. They start lurking around in late 40s, and we have to tell them to get off our lawn.

My boyhood idol said it best (no, not Rod Laver):
“I don't want to belong to any club that would accept me as one of its members.”.

Happy B-Day @on the line

One win and one loss yesterday .... a mixed match today

So far the best thing about turning 50 is that my Fitbit changed my age group .... so now under the "how fit you are" button ... I moved from "Good to Very Good" to "Very Good to Excellent" overnight.

I’m 3 kilos off the mark. As have allways been. The best part is, there is golfing season just around the corner...

Burn Pete, Burn them love handles off! A month ahead on the green turf. A round a day and 2-4 hrs daily practice coming up.

Cannot play tennis as much as would be required to step up the VO2-max. Knees have been killing me for the last two months. But cannot let a single practice or hit go by. [emoji2962]

Getting old is so frustrating. My legs finally feel awesome, everything in my game feels good except this nagging wrist/thumb injury. It's OK on ground strokes and was OK on service, I thought, until a long match last week.

So I rested it all week, hit a little bit yesterday and practiced some underhand serves ust in case. This morning during my match I switched to underhand serve after serving two games regular. I told my opponent before hand, told him I was not goofing around but I had to do it ( I did not want to seem like a dick).

I was playing number three singles so my opponent wasn't very strong and I knew I could break him so I figured my service wouldn't matter too much. It was quite an adventure, I found that I had to move a couple feet back off the baseline to reliably get in he decent side spinning underhand serve.

He broke me a couple times, I held a couple times and I was able to break him enough to win three and four. A win's a win I guess.

Never ever had a wrist or hand injury, why now? I want my wasted youth back!

What strings and tension are you using Dick? 8-B

Kirshbaum Pro Line II (18) and OGSM (17), a pretty soft hybrid. String on my ancient Klipper @ 65/62, comes off about 55 (according to racket tune), a day later it's 52. I will go up a bit when it warms up.

That's the first time I've served underhanded and hopefully the last!

I’m on Lux Alu Power BB 1.25 @26-27 kilos, yet nobody ever asked me.

I hear a lot of questioning on elbow issues and really lot of rolling eyes, cause I tend to hit heavy. On lower tensions there is too much pocketing and no control over the ball.

The only time I got elbow sore, was, when on rehab from a torn hamstring and after the reconstruction got back on the court with no legs, but a competitors mind.

The upside of that time was, that, I had to learn hitting with a totally loose arm and without grip pressure.

Keep playing that plastic at your age and get back to me. Hopefully they saved some extra tendon from that butt surgery.

Just figured a thing.

My team mate have had wrist issues and on Arcoxia on regular basis, daily to be honest.

Have played with him in doubles, but never really saw his 1-hbh slice... straight horizontal arm, wrist in full ulnar deviation playing against heavy topspin 4.5’s regularly... Ush! No wonder, his wrist gets punished.

For reals though, it's not the strings it's the actual serve wrist motion that does it. Hurts to air swing. And of course tennis didn't hurt it, it just doesn't help it

I have seen you play ... you got skills. You don't need poly (Pete does ... hehehe). Fullbed Velocity 16 natural @52 ... heal and thank me.

Well, I’m not arming the ball...

Might go down to 24 kilos later, but since now allmost back in the form, gonna step up back, where I used to be. It’s 125 € a round of new strings to my arsenal, but it is the best combo, I’ve come across.

Off the record bought an Angell Custom TC100, which by the specs of the previous owner has just about the same specs as my curret sticks. Only difference is basically the stiffness, which is 2-4 RA lower than my current. The stiffest on the market. [emoji847]

I’m yet to master the underhanded dreadfull vicious slice serve, but luckily still produce 115 mph on overhead one. And can mix in some slice and kick on demand.

Flat serves were gone a-wall yesterday, but got a lot of free points on my second serve. Still, the lights and velour surface got the best of my baseline game.

Really not enough experience on comp play on different surfacec and a former ping-pong champ on the other side. Lost 2/3 in straight sets.

Dang, got lost with that exclamation - PERIOD, from Bbb.

So, @norcal has a western grip on serves too?

Do you hit the same face on underarmed serves or the opposite of your groundie forehand?

If so, then your serve would be somewhat uglier than Sock’s forehand.
